Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Lectures on the Gospels The nineteenth century has been an eventful period in the study of the Bible as well as in other departments of learning. Ancient documents of great importance have been discovered, and many very fruitful investigations have been made upon special points, by the aid of which we are enabled to attack with larger resources and a better hope of success the great problems that still remain unsolved. But the condition of New Testament study is in one point very different from that of Old Testament study. There is no dominant theory before us like that of Graf and Wellhausen, who, by putting the Prophets before the Law, have enabled us for the first time to see the history of Israel in its true perspective. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Law and the Gospel Gospel of the Blessed God, stated in simplicity and clear ness, in perfect accordance with the instructions of the Holy Scripture, and the Liturgy, Articles, and Homilies of the Protestant Episcopal Church. He humbly trusts that the Glorious Jesus whom he worships as his Lord and his God, -his Great God and Saviour, - will be still pleased to use this work for the manifestation of his glory, the bringing of the vessels of his mercy to an acknowledgment and obedience of the truth, and the guarding of his Church against the vital and dangerous errors which these days have again brought forth, all of which, the author believes, originate in an ignorance, or in confused views, of the relations of the Law and the Gospel to each other and to man. He has also in prepa ration, should his life be spared for their publication, two other works in connection with this; the one under the title of Christ is all, displaying these precious truths in the actual experience of mam - and the other under the title of The good Confession, exhibiting the outward manifestation of their influence and Operation in the Chris tian life. He humbly hopes, and for this end, begs the prayers of Christian friends, that the Glorious King of Zion will graciously accept his efforts in these books to proclaim the truth, to the promotion of his own glory, and the edifying of his Church. And committing his labours to Him, he would adore and glorify God, the Father, the Son, and the Holv Ghost, one Almighty, Gracious God, with thanksgivings and praise, for evermore. Amen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel Its Own Witness: The Hulsean Lectures for 1873 BY the changes of recent years the Hulsean Lectures have been reduced from twenty to eight, and from eight to four. The limit of four lectures is manifestly too narrow for the detailed discussion of any important subject or the development of an elaborate argument; and the fact of the vaca tion being selected as the time for their delivery, - as was the case with the present lectures, which were appointed for the last two Sundays in Lent, Good Friday, and Easter Day, when, for the. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel of the Kingdom of Heaven: A Course of Lectures on the Gospel of St. Luke I have called these discourses 'Lectures' not sermons. They are strictly readings on the Gospel of St. Luke. But they were addressed to a congregation. The ordinary rules of preaching were observed in the delivery of them; a text was placed at the head of each. It was chosen because much of the sense of the surrounding passages seemed to be woven into it. That I presume is the meaning of a 'text;' the justification for its use in the pulpit. It should always suggest, and in some sort compel, the study of the book from which it is taken; it should never be forgotten in the disquisition which is appended to it. When I revised the lectures, and prepared them for the press, I might, along with other alterations, have dropped these headings. But I was unwilling to give the book the form of a commentary, or to lose any of the links which connected the Gospel that is written with the Gospel that is preached. Why I felt this reluctance will be evident if I explain the object of the course, and the circumstances which suggested it. They are printed on the suggestion of the authorities of the Sunday School Union, in the hope that they may introduce a larger audience to the studies with which they are concerned By the title, The Construction of the Bible, is meant not so much the origin of its contents in the minds of the writers - a subject which Opens up the great question of inspiration, its mode and method - as the putting together of the several parts of Scripture in one volume. This story of construction, therefore, is wholly literary and historical. At the same time it is necessary to be in some degree acquainted with it if we would understand the mutual relations of the various parts of what is seen to be a slowly unfold.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Lectures on the Connection Between the Biblical and Physical History of Man: Delivered by Invitation, From the Chair of Political Economy, Etc;, Of the Louisiana University, in December, 1848 Dear Sir: - Born in a slave State, and having passed our childhood and manhood in daily intercourse with the white and black races, it is but natural that you and I should have become deeply impressed not only by the physical but also by the moral and intellectual differences which exist between them: nor is it less natural that a doubt as to their common origin should suggest itself to our minds. Twenty-five years of unceasing professional intercourse with these races, and study of their diseases, anatomy and physiology, a careful perusal of all the leading works published in the French and English languages on the Natural History of Man, from Camper and Blumenbach down to the present day, and an examination of the earliest known records of nations, both written and monumental, have not only served to strengthen this doubt in my mind, but have ripened it into a firm conviction that tho Almighty in his wisdom has peopled our vast planet from many distant centres, instead of one, and with races or species origin ally and radically distinct. And the Abbé Loisy's epoch making book, The Gospel and the Church, serve to mark on opposite sides the progress of modern theo logical thought. Both in their similarities and by their contrasts these two books may help an in quirer find his way amid the confusions of new biblical investigations to clearer appreciations of the origins and values Of Christian institutions and be liefs. The two conceptions of Christianity which are presented in these volumes confront each other like separate cliffs; if one takes his stand at the top Of either of them he will find no bridge across to the other; but if he follows the way which runs between them at the bottom, he will be led out to a larger conception of Christianity in which their separation disappears. Fundamentally, the revolt of Hamack from received Protestant dogmatism, and the protest of Loisy against Official Romanism, have, more than at first may appear, a common ground in historical. Book excerpt: Waardenburg’s magisterial essay traces the rise and development of the academic study of religion from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century, outlining the establishment of the discipline, its connections with other fields, religion as a subject of research, and perspectives on a phenomenological study of religion. Futhermore a second part comprises an anthology of texts from 41 scholars whose work was programmatic in the evolution of the academic study of religion. Each chapter presents a particular approach, theory, and method relevant to the study of religion. The pieces selected for this volume were taken from the discipline of religious studies as well as from related fields, such as anthropology, sociology, and psychology, to name a few.

But I have not followed him blindly. I have diligently com pared him with others, Ewald especially, only to be more thoroughly convinced of his superior penetra tion. My studies of the New Testament have been less dominated by any one authority. Recognizing the incomparable genius of Baur, I have hesitated to go with him in his refusal to grant Paul more than four Epistles. Perhaps Zeller's treatment of the Acts found me a readier convert, because of its striking vindication of the Apostle of my boundless reverence and love. And I trust that my opinions upon many points in both Testaments have been profoundly influenced by the immense sobriety of Dr. Samuel Davidson, whose elaborate introduc tions are a double monument of his colossal in.
