They both once were hummingbirds. One day, the husband went out searching for food. While sucking the honey in the flower, he forgot to keep track of the time. The flower folded unexpectedly. He couldnt get out, so he had to spend the night inside the flower. Back home in the nest, his wife thought that he was fooling around and that he had forgotten about her and the chicks. That same night, there was a tragic fire that burned all the bushes. The wife decided to stay in the nest with her chicks, and she let the fire take their lives. With her last breath, she promised herself that if she were to be given a new life or be reborn on this earth, she would never ever speak to any man again. God of love sent them back to earth again. This time, they were both born as humans. The wife was born into a royal family as a beautiful princess. The husband was born as a handsome son of a poor farmer in the same kingdom. Time passed; the princess grew up but never ever spoke to any man in the kingdom, including her own father, the king. The royal family was worried that no prince or any person would marry their daughter. The king sent out an announcement: Any young man that his daughter spoke to or talked to, he would be granted to marry her and become his son-in-law. And the search for the prince charming for their daughter began. This story is exciting and a must-read.

In these devotional and inspirational pieces, she draws on her many years of experience on an Alberta farm and her deep connections to the land, the community, and the small village church. "Maxine Hancock, a brilliant scholar and teacher and a gifted public communicator, here lets us into her inner heart and life. Her insights come one by one, the way they do in daily living, but each of these very personal, earthbound essays are informed by a heavenly vision of a superintending God who loves her and leads her. Beautifully and poignantly written, Gold From the Fire never dodges the hard questions, but Hancock's faith shines through them." -Luci Shaw, Author of The Crime of Living Cautiously "Maxine Hancock is one of those few scholars who is comfortable and competent debating in a televison studio, speaking to a packed conferenced assembly, giving a reasoned presentation to scholars or encouraging a young student in their walk of faith. Her gift of ministry in writing greatly enriches our lives as followers of the Lord. " - Brian C. Stiller, Tyndale University College & Seminary Maxine Hancock is Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies and Spiritual Theology at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The country's most noted writers, poets, and artists converge at a singular moment in American life, a great companion to fans of the film A Quiet Passion, starring Cynthia Nixon as Emily Dickinson. At the close of the Civil War, the lives of Emily Dickinson, Mark Twain, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Martin Johnson Heade intersected in an intricate map of friendship, family, and romance that marked a milestone in the development of American art and literature. Using the image of a flitting hummingbird as a metaphor for the gossamer strands that connect these larger-than-life personalities, Christopher Benfey re-creates the summer of 1882, the summer when Mabel Louise Todd-the protégé to the painter Heade-confesses her love for Emily Dickinson's brother, Austin, and the players suddenly find themselves caught in the crossfire between the Calvinist world of decorum, restraint, and judgment and a new, unconventional world in which nature prevails and freedom is all.

Jordan - a tattooed man who lives alone at the base of his ancestral hill in a boat that was never launched - has his solitude broken by the arrival of two travellers: one who falls from the air, another who arrives following childhood tracks. Kingi, a distinguished Battle of Britain veteran, is journeying to keep a promise made on Crete half a century ago. Kataraina, a former prostitute, has left Sydney's Kings Cross and is finally travelling home. But their journeys and their lives change forever with the arrival of a young woman and her daughter a This novel sets global conflict against a sensuous search for love. The action sweeps across fifty years, and ranges around the globe from New Zealand to northern Europe and the Mediterranean. Hummingbird is a bittersweet exploration of freedom and confinement, parenthood and family, home and belonging.

Book excerpt: "e;Waiting for Pat was like waiting for the music to start,"e; write the editors of Fireflies at Twilight: Letters from Pat Adams. A true Aquarian-age woman, Pat was equally comfortable swinging a hammer on a building crew, gardening at home, or working as a public school teacher's aide for children with autism and other special needs. Pat lived the last 15 years of her life with cancer and its repercussions. However, Pat was more annoyed and irritated by cancer than ever stopped or labeled by the disease. Pat writes letters, emails, and journal entries to her mother, husband, children, and her many relatives and friends, and highlights her daily life on a southern Wisconsin farm, her appreciation of the natural world, and her courage and vivacity to live fully each day. The reader will soon think of Pat as a close friend, and come to know her as wry, honest, caring, and sometimes poetic. To her mom, Pat writes: "e;I'm outside... enjoyed the golden minutes of the evening, when the sun lights everything. Now is the blue time - would we call it twilight."e; In an unsent letter to a long lost friend, Pat talks about being a young mother. "e;Beyond the next meal, laundry load, dishpan, lies my future."e; In a letter to a close friend, Pat writes: "e;I mostly mother and hope for the best."e; Before her first surgery, she writes to her husband, "e;Remember that I was pretty tolerant of people's faults but spared not that blatant stupidity."e; And in the same letter, Pat admits: "e;I fell in love with you, at first recklessly, then - over and over again."e; Her writings include her quiet thoughts during winter hibernations in a drafty farmhouse, a raw intimate love letter to her husband before her first surgery; her frank yet kind advice to her daughters about employment and empowerment; a description of a winter outing to a nearby bison farm; summer observances of turtles and loons in Upper Peninsula, Michigan; and her lively commentary about her beloved Book Babes group. Pat's story is not as much about the art of dying as it is about the art of living in the present, with messages of humor and hope in how the human spirit remains undaunted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book Summary The story begins with the main character attending a 50 Year Class Reunion and then flashes back to her four years in high school. At that time she lived in a small southern California town where everyone knew everyone else, and there wasn't much for teenagers to do, and yet they manage to keep busy somehow. Life at that time (before the electronic age) went at a much slower pace, and people who grew up in the 50's and 60's were part of the last innocent generation. The book describes Elaine's relationship with her family, her life on a poultry ranch, and the closeness of a small community. It also describes many high school activities, classes, boy-girl relationships, and problems and heartaches, the euphoria and the sadness that are a part of life at that age. The story is based on an actual town and high school, and many incidents in the book actually happened the way that I described them. I did change the names of the town and the high school however. Back in those days it was much easier to work on your own car, the old hot rods and jalopies. Gas was thirty one cents a gallon, and one could buy a hamburger and Coke for less than fifty cents. But the monthly income for the average working family was only about $300, so the budget had to be stretched to make ends meet. A few women worked outside the home, but most did not. Many of the television sets were black and white, but color TV was on its way in. There was no reality TV at that time, but there were plenty of Westerns and family programming. Of course music played a huge part in the lives of young people, and it was the era of Rock and Roll. Elvis, Buddy Holly, and the Everly Brothers were household names. Dick Clark's American Bandstand was on TV in the afternoons, and everyone rushed home from school to watch the latest dances. There were only records at the time, 45's and 78's, which were played on phonographs. It would be years before cassettes, CD's, and iPods were invented. The music was portable though because everyone was getting transistor radios. If a group of kids got together at a lake or somewhere out in the middle of nowhere, they would just tune their car radios to the same station and turn up the volumne. I have tried throughout the book to portray life back in those days, with many details depicting the culture and fads of that time. I am hoping that this book will give today's teenagers a different perspective on life at that time, while giving my own generation a chance to walk down Memory Lane.

A discussion of Plotinus, Barks's appearance on PBS NewsHour, a note Keats once left on Wordsworth's mantelpiece, a splinter in the heel, and a quote from the Upanishads—all make their way into Barks's most recent poems, which achieve intimacy and expansiveness at the same time.

Book excerpt: Easy McClure is a hot-headed little spitfire named after her father’s favorite saloon girl. When her father is killed in a range war, she inherits his ranch. Alone now, and facing the responsibility of taking care of a large spread, she packs away her bloomers and corsets and wears tight jeans with a six-gun strapped to her hip. One day, a bleeding cowboy rides up to her house with a bullet in his shoulder. By the time she learns he’s a notorious gunslinger, his whole gang arrives. She has never seen such hot, sexy cowboys in her life, and has a problem resisting their advances. As time passes, she is slowly drawn to them and puts her better judgment aside, surrendering to their steamy seduction. Then the day comes for them to leave. That’s when she must admit she’s in love with each one and faces a painful dilemma -- can her love tame all four men, or will they forever be a group of hard-riding gunslingers dodging bullets and running from the law?
