Dr. Mary Jane, director of the professional health program, sells out health professionals for cash. She calls the program dough for docs. In league with Dr. Pierce Matthews, the sex and drug relapsing director of the Bayou Addiction Recovery Facility (B.A.R.F.), she railroads professionals into his facility. She is assisted by two medical licensing board members also receiving kickbacks. The atrocious conditions are overlooked because of payoffs at even higher political levels. The scheme is creatively financed by insurance fraud, treatments tainted by conflict of interest, spiked urine screens and overcharging. Besides holding the exclusive contract for all medical professionals, BARF also panders to anyone with a buck or insurance. The only prerequisite for admittance is patient vulnerability so the psychological blackmail can commence. Who are the care providers at this mendacity motel? The facility physician is also Pierce Matthews who took a weekend course in addiction medicine and is now an authority. He feeds his patients antipsychotic meds as frequently as he feeds his own opiate addiction. The head counselor is a homophobic racist Baptist preacher, the Komodo dragon in charge of the emotional feast. The administrator is a cock-of-the-walk redneck fine-tuning the fraud. The black single mother is a cocaine widow tossing the bloody bait into this emotional shark tank. The narcissistic female changes her values as often as her underwear. The patients resist the emotional onion-skinning with humor, despite the facility creed of emotional rape with complete invulnerability. But the grim reaper has his scythe poised. Where will his blade fall? Will he cleave corruption or hone honesty? Will liars be lacerated or the truthful torn apart? The one thing for certain is there will be death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tobe Hooper's productions, which often trespassed upon the safety of the family unit, cast a critical eye toward an America in crisis. Often dismissed by scholars and critics as a one-hit wonder thanks to his 1974 horror classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Hooper nevertheless was instrumental in the development of a robust and deeply political horror genre from the 1960s until his death in 2017. In American Twilight, the authors assert that the director was an auteur whose works featured complex monsters and disrupted America’s sacrosanct perceptions of prosperity and domestic security. American Twilight focuses on the skepticism toward American institutions and media and the articulation of uncanny spaces so integral to Hooper’s vast array of feature and documentary films, made-for-television movies, television episodes, and music videos. From Egg Shells (1969) to Poltergeist (1982), Djinn (2013), and even Billy Idol’s music video for “Dancing with Myself” (1985), Tobe Hooper provided a singular directorial vision that investigated masculine anxiety and subverted the idea of American exceptionalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karol Mysliwiec surveys a turbulent time in Ancient Egyptian culture and history -- the eight hundred years between the eleventh century B.C.E. and the conquest of Egypt by Alexander the Great in 332 B.C.E., after which Egypt became part of the Hellenistic world. It was a time when Libyans, Kushites, Persians, and Greeks ascended to the throne more frequently than did indigenous kings. The history of this phase of pharaonic Egypt, marked by rapid changes in rule, has been relatively neglected until now. Egypt had become increasingly involved in the affairs of its Near Eastern neighbors (Assyria, Babylon, and Persia) and of the Mediterranean world. These many cultures greatly enriched and influenced pharaonic traditions. At the same time, Egyptian civilization extended far beyond the borders of Egypt itself. One of the most important cultural products of this period is the Old Testament, called here "an inestimable source of information on daily life in pharaonic Egypt". Mysliwiec perceives in recent archaeological discoveries clear evidence that the First Millennium B.C.E. was witness to more than a slow, progressive dying out of the pharaonic past; new and creative elements profoundly altered the culture of Ancient Egypt. Originally published in Polish, The Twilight of Ancient Egypt appeared in 1998 in a German edition. The Cornell edition has been updated by the author and also contains previously unpublished photographs of recently discovered treasures.

Book excerpt: A compilation of many years of my poems; they are all rather abstract and inlaid with metaphor, though some are simple. The poems in this particular book range from love - which are abstract and generally may be difficult to grasp on the first read. Then to the realm of fantasy, where length is no issue and all that matters is diving into the waters of a new world. Last, the journey ends with philosophy, where the poems ponder death, the future, the past, and everything in between. And, at the end of the quest, hopefully the reader acquired not only a sense of wonderment, but wish to read the book again and again."With a fantastical edge, his poetry provokes deep thought and feeling while simultaneously embedding imaginative imagery, heavy metaphors and an array of other literary devices. His fascination with the cultures and myths of various ancient peoples has resulted in numerous allusions to their lore, legends, and literature." - Jennifer Slate

As enemies of otherworldly origin push the warriors' power to the limit, a very human menace emerges, eager to grind them all to dust. DOOMSDAY CONTAGION Brothers-in-arms Kane and Grant upheld the inflexible laws of Cobaltville until they finally turned their backs on its wicked regime. Now a fresh threat brings them back to the barony—a mysterious plague that kills with impunity. It soon becomes clear that this murderous pestilence isn't the result of some random mutation, but the product of a dark and twisted mind. With the disease spreading rapidly, the Cerberus warriors can only hope they're not too late—or too vulnerable—to save humanity from being snuffed out by one of its own.

Book excerpt: Postwar Italian poetry carries on the legacy of one of the world's richest literary traditions, a tradition in which conflict and diversity are important parts. It is a poetry that reflects, with extraordinary intensity, the social, psychological, and moral turmoil of the modern world. Substantial selections fromt ehw orks of twenty-one of Italy's most influential contemporary poets make up this anthology, which will make this largely unknown poetic territory more familiar to the English-speaking world. The introductory essay discusses the unique Italian talent for fusing cultural and political struggle into literary form and Italian poetry's important impact on developments in European poetry throughout the twentieth century. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1981.
