Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to ascertain whether open management (OM) significantly reduces employee turnover in small South African Information Technology (IT) firms. Human Resource Management literature widely predicts that OM increases employee performance, commitment and retention. By 2010 there will be more than one-hundred-thousand unfilled IT jobs due to the skills shortage. The high labour demand and short supply introduces a counter force to the OM predictions, namely market-pull. This research tests the relative strengths of market-pull and loyalty created by OM practices by means of five hypothesis tests. The tests include OM awareness, historic turnover comparisons and turnover intention comparisons. Interviews were held with the owners of twelve small IT firms. Fifty-three employee surveys were collected. Most firm owners were not formally aware of OM. Historic turnover and future turnover intentions were lower in open managed firms, thus affirming current literature. The practical implications are that small South African IT firm owners should endeavour to understand OM and also adopt it, first to remain competitive and second to retain key employees. A possible model to predict turnover candidates based on open or closed rating is also proposed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a systematic overview on issues and challenges related to work identity and identification at work in the ‘new’ South African workplace. It shares results and measures of a work identity research project that was conducted in a variety of modern South African workplaces. It looks at the concept of work identity in the light of a keen and growing interest in why people are becoming attached to, involved in, engaged with, or committed to their work. Still a relatively unexplored concept, built on the foundations of different identity theory streams, the concept of work identity provides a fundamental reconsideration of explaining engaging behaviours at work. Against the backdrop of a changing political and economic landscape and the impact these radical changes had on the South African workplace, the main research question of the project was the South African employees’ question ‘Who am I at work?’. In search of the answer to that question, the book explores the impact of South African employees’ life spheres and life roles on their choice of work-related identification foci. It further explores how identity work tactics and strategies are being used to develop and define their own work identities, resulting in the conceptualisation and development of a work-based identity measure.

Book excerpt: This dissertation presents two frameworks of what drives the ict workers' decisions to terminate their employment with their employers, using in-depth interviewing of 38 ict participants in different industry sectors in South Africa. The findings show external labor markets (ELMs) and internal labor markets (ilm) turnover factor across information and communication technology sectors and demographic attributes. Elm factors were especially complex, with aa forcing employers to increase race and gender representation with individuals from South Africa's historically disadvantaged groups. Affirmative action puts a premium tag on hiring women and Black people. Aa therefore, provided mobility for these groups and restricted mobility for White males. Despite the shortage of skilled ict professionals in the sector, aa gives preferential treatment which dissatisfied the undesignated groups, thus forcing them to have intentions to leave their jobs or the country. Ilm factors were less complicated than ELMs, with general dissatisfaction with internal company policies about pay, promotions and the scopes of their jobs causing them to terminate their jobs. Compensation was the most influential turnover, with professionals always looking for more money and promotions. If there was perceived lack of commitment by the employee from the organization, they were highly likely to leave. Some ict professionals chose to leave their permanent jobs to work on short-to-medium term projects which were flexible. Across demographic groupings, Black men were the most hoppers but preferred workers in the ict sector, as described by some managers and other male workers. The corporate ict culture was still a barrier for female workers and caused women not to stay long because of unwelcoming environment. The preferential employment of Black males increased their mobility and slowed down the entry of women in core ict work and managerial positions. The voluntary turnover of the ict professionals was mainly caused by organizational rewards, affirmative action, and a host of other workplace factors. Book excerpt: The study attempts to understand the importance of Internal Career Anchors (ICA) and External Career Opportunities (ECO) when determining employee Intention to Quit (turnover intentions) (ITQ) from an organization. The respondents were Information Technology (IT) professionals working in the state of Kerala. The analysis revealed negative relationship between the degree of ECO and ITQ (-0.49) and positive relationship between ICA and ITQ (0.16). Only two ICAs, namely, job security and technical-functional competence were negative and significant. No demographic variable, except years of experience in the organization, showed significant effect on ITQ. The results indicate that the IT companies in Kerala should try and give special emphasis to ICA dimensions of the individuals and offer ECO in line with employee characteristics to curb employee turnover.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently South Africa experienced an economic decline, however, despite the current positive trends, many large corporations are compelled to reduce personnel costs. Retrenchments have therefore become an increasingly common occurrence within South Africa. This has had an impact on the level of organisational commitment, absenteeism and turnover. Studies support the link between the levels of organisational commitment of employees, absenteeism and subsequently labour turnover. There is a relative lack of research in South African organisations into the influence of retrenchments on employees within call centre environments that have undergone retrenchments. The aims of this study was therefore to identify the levels of organisational commitment amongst call centre employees who survived a retrenchment that occurred in 2001.
