Book excerpt: Sophie All I did was try to help my best friend escape her abusive boyfriend. And for that I ended up in a wheelchair. Life's no longer worth living. No man will want me now. Then I find my nightmare is only beginning when Ethan wants me as leverage to get his woman back. I end up under the protection of the Satan's Devils, an outlaw motorcycle club in Arizona. The woman I was would have been in her element among a group of handsome, rugged bikers; the disabled woman I am now feels scared and vulnerable, and soon I find this isn't the safest place to hide. But with a contract out on me, there's nowhere else for me to go. There's one reason for me to stay, the VP of the Satan's Devils who teaches me to feel like a whole woman again. Wraith She doesn't fit into our world. Fuck, even if she wasn't in that damn wheelchair she'd be out of her element. But as soon as I saw her something attracted me to her. From the start I wanted her, but she thinks she's undesirable and is scared of taking a man to her bed as though her disability defines who she is. I'm going to need to teach her she's wrong. But before I can take my chance everything goes to shit. She's under our protection, but we fail to protect her from one of our own.

Book excerpt: Dennis Orphen, in writing a novel, has stolen the life story of his friend, Effie Callingham, the former wife of a famous, Hemingway-like novelist, Andrew Callingham. Orphen’s betrayal is not the only one, nor the worst one, in this hilarious satire of the New York literary scene. (Powell personally considered this to be her best New York novel.) Powell takes revenge here on all publishers, and her baffoonish MacTweed is a comic invention worthy of Dickens. And as always in Powell’s New York novels, the city itself becomes a central character: “On the glittering black pavement legs hurried by with umbrella tops, taxis skidded along the curb, their wheels swishing through the puddles, raindrops bounced like dice in the gutter.” Powell’s famous wit was never sharper than here, but Turn, Magic Wheel is also one of the most poignant and heart-wrenching of her novels.

Book excerpt: If you have ever wondered how the universe physically works, then this book focusing on the central role that rotational motion plays in our daily lives will lead you to new discoveries, knowledge, and wisdom. Rotation is found everywhere but often overlooked. There are rotating wheels on cars, wheels that spin in games of chance, Ferris wheels at city carnivals, and other manifestations of rotation that play an essential role in virtually everything we do. Even more important is how everyday phenomena driven by rotation make up life's intrinsic components. Supported by historical information about the lives of individuals who have contributed to the understanding of rotation, this book delves into the physical principles that explain hurricanes, trade winds, gravity measurements, and much more. Rotation continues to play a large role in the world, and it's possible that the universe itself rotates. Take a journey defined by new ideas and little-known facts in Wheels in the Sky, a must read for anyone interested in the origin and workings of the universe.

Book excerpt: This story opens in the early nineteen sixties, at a fictional isolated Catholic Convent somewhere in North Wales. As the story gently unfolds, the main characters honestly start to consider the foundations, and tribal marking of organised religion, especially of their own. (Devout Christians will find this book to be a very challenging read.) Calmly they each discard their belief that Christ was the only Son of God. Christ's message however; 'love Thy neighbour as Thyself' is happily acknowledged as the only way of ensuring the continuing survival of the Human Race. Weaving around this main theme are several honest, if rather robust, love stories. At appropriate points, the debilitating effect of loneliness is sympathetically portrayed, and arguments against committing suicide are also presented. Kirkus reviews: - An engaging tale. The story is strong and the erotica is nicely balanced by the humanity of the characters

Book excerpt: Wheels Turning Inward is a rich collection of over fifty poems, following a poet's mythic and spiritual journey that begins and ends in Christ, but crosses easily onto the paths of many other contemplative traditions. Ultimately, this is a journey of discovering a keen sense of spiritual community through a meditative dialog with the Divine. Each poem is a reflection and a remembrance of this dialog, arising out of a conversation that is deep and true, a conversation grounded in a sacramental practice of stillness, silence, peace, and unity celebrating the holiness of all creation.Through the poet's voice and eyes, we catch sight of the clear longing of God for all humankind, and the true value of relationships through which we come to know and become known by this mystery. Every poem will gently guide the reader on a journey that leads to an awareness of the sacred calling out to life. Celebrating life in the first breath of an infant, in the bright smile of a little girl, and in the light of creation reflected within the innocent eyes of a small boy. It may also appear in the complex song of a mockingbird mending together the deepest sorrows of the world, or in the angels we give birth to every day. These poems touch and awaken the compassion inherent in every human heart, and remind us that God's presence, however, we may imagine God, may be found within our own breath. In each single breath we take. Breathe Deeply. Turn Inward.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gambling has been a practice central to many cultures throughout history. In Dice, Cards, Wheels, Thomas M. Kavanagh scrutinizes the changing face of the gambler in France over a period of eight centuries, using gambling and its representations in literature as a lens through which to observe French culture. Kavanagh argues that the way people gamble tells us something otherwise unrecognized about the values, conflicts, and cultures that define a period or class. To gamble is to enter a world traced out by the rules and protocols of the game the gambler plays. That world may be an alternative to the established order, but the shape and structure of the game reveal indirectly hidden tensions, fears, and prohibitions. Drawing on literature from the Middle Ages to the present, Kavanagh reconstructs the figure of the gambler and his evolving personae. He examines, among other examples, Bodel's dicing in a twelfth-century tavern for the conversion of the Muslim world; Pascal's post-Reformation redefinition of salvation as the gambler's prize; the aristocratic libertine's celebration of the bluff; and Balzac's, Barbey d'Aurevilly's, and Bourget's nineteenth-century revisions of the gambler. Dice, Cards, Wheels embraces the tremendous breadth of French history and emerges as a broad-ranging study of the different forms of gambling, from the dice games of the Middle Ages to the digital slot machines of the twenty-first century, and what those games tell us about French culture and history.

Book excerpt: "Progressive, passionate, and unfailingly feminist, Kaufman is a breathtakingly fine poet."--The Nation "If someone is going to be exalted as a representative voice of Jewish or Israeli life in contemporary American poetry, one couldn't ask for a more insightful or mature writer to assume such an impossible role."--The Jerusalem Post "Kaufman approaches Jerusalem's bitter memories, contested histories and joyous unfoldings with a wary love."--Publishers Weekly Shirley Kaufman utilizes enigmatic symbolism from the Book of Ezekiel as she writes into the themes of exile and emigration that have marked her work since she moved to Israel thirty-six years ago. Her new poems attempt to bring meaning to an irrational world--the unrelenting passage of human life, the risks of artistic endeavoring, and the artist's struggle with the loss of sight and memory. After nearly four decades of writing and publishing, Kaufman maintains a lightness of touch even while her poetry takes on an increased awareness of danger and urgency. . . . I don't want to look back but can't see ahead from where I am now and now is whatever I didn't do yesterday. Not what I live in. Now is the fear there won't be anything after now. Shirley Kaufman was born in Seattle, lived in San Francisco, and immigrated to Jerusalem in 1973. Eight volumes of her award-winning poetry have been published in the United States, three by Copper Canyon Press. She lives in Jerusalem, Israel.
