Book excerpt: These more useful but equally appealing arts--ceramics, carpets, and fabrics--are the subject of sections by Walter B. Denny and Louise W. Mackie. Both ceramics and weaving have evolved major artistic traditions in Turkey. Tiles contributed immeasurably to the beauty of the Ottoman buildings and, as is borne out by innumerable book illustrations, the sheen of beautiful fabrics and flow of beautiful rugs were a vital part of what can only be described as the "art" of courtly life under the sultans. Moreover, Turkish tiles and dishes, garments, and rugs have been admired throughout the West for centuries--ever since Marco Polo described "Turkey Carpets" as the "finest and handsomest in the world." Their subtle, complex, and luminously colored designs still enchant us today. An admirably thorough yet succinct chapter by Roderic H. Davison orients the reader to Turkish history.^

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This vibrantly illustrated volume chronicles nearly a millennium of Islamic art and architecture in Turkey. Illustrated with some 250 attractive and well-chosen color photographs, Turkish Art and Architecture is fascinating reading for anyone with an interest in Turkey, and an essential reference for any student of Islamic art and architecture. The Anatolian peninsula, one of the oldest seats of civilization, has been ruled by a succession of great powers, including the Romans and their successors in the East, the Byzantines. Its Islamic era began in 1071, when the Seljuk Turks, nomads from Central Asia who had already taken control of Persia, defeated the Byzantine army at Manzikert and moved west, creating a new sultanate in Anatolia. The Seljuks were eventually succeeded in this region by the Ottoman Turks, who crossed the Bosphorus to conquer an exhausted Constantinople in 1453, and went on to extend their power far beyond the borders of modern Turkey, establishing an empire that endured until the early twentieth century. Ruling over a land that had always been at the crossroads of east and west, these Islamic dynasties developed a cosmopolitan art and architecture. As art historian Giovanni Curatola demonstrates in this insightful new book, they combined elements of the prestigious Persian style and memories of their nomadic past with local Mediterranean traditions, and also adopted local building materials, such as stone and wood. Curatola introduces us first to the new types of buildings introduced by the Seljuks?like the caravansary and the türbe, or mausoleum?and then to the sophisticated architectural achievements of the Ottomans, which culminated in the great domed mosques constructed by the master builder Mimar Sinan (d. 1588). He also traces the history of the decorative arts in Turkey, which included lavishly ornamented carpets, manuscripts, armor, and ceramics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before printing, books were written with reed pens using black ink and Arabic letters on papers that were polished with ahar (Mixture made with cornstarch and egg white for polishing the paper) and mühre (a device made of glass, used to make paper smooth and shiny). Important ones were written in “beautiful writing” (Hüsn-i Hat) and embellished with illuminations, marblings, engravings and miniatures. The books prepared in such artistic ways were generally given to Padishahs, lady sultans, and notable people of the time and were dedicated to libraries founded by those who are interested in books. Manuscript libraries that contain the old waqf libraries are today centres of illumination examples. However, it is not that easy for people who would like to see the examples of specific time or illuminator since a catalogue system has not been made yet. It is often not allowed to get pictures from manuscripts (because it will give damage to the books). Therefore, students are not able to see as many examples as they like or they need. Illumination is the name given to the embellishments, which are made with paints and gold, of manuscript books. Consequently, the art of illumination started to disappear as printing came into our country. School of Calligraphers (Medresetü’l-Hattatîn) which was set up in 1914 put the arts of manuscript books into action again. The aim of this book is to constitute a collection of precious examples chosen from unique manuscripts for the learners of illumination. All photos in the book were taken at Suleymaniye Library. In order to reach this goal, the text is meant to be short and examples are chosen from the works most of which have copying dates listed and they are chosen especially from the Seljuk, Beylik and Ottoman periods. Collection name of the book from which the example is taken and its recording number, name of the book and writer if any, outer measure, copying date, page number, name of its illuminator or miniature house if known and appropriate short information about it are written under the pictures. We hope this album of Turkish Illumination Art in which we tried to give as many examples as possible, will be beneficial especially for students. The book also offers techniques and space for practising.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early-Republican era (1923-1938) was a major period of musical and cultural change in Turkey. Alaturka: Style in Turkish Music is a study of the significance of style in Turkish music and, in particular, the polemical debate about an eastern style of Turkish music (called, alaturka) that developed during this rich and complicated era of Turkish history. Representing more than twenty years of research, the book explores the stylistic categories that show the intersection between music and culture; the different chapters treat musical materials, musical practices and musical contexts in turn. Informed by critical approaches to musical aesthetics in ethnomusicology as well as musicology and anthropology, the book focuses upon a native discourse about musical style, highlighting a contemporary apprehension about the appropriate constitution of a national identity. The argument over style discloses competing conceptions of Turkish space and time where definitions of the east and the west, and interpretations of the past and the present respectively were hotly contested. John Morgan O'Connell makes a significant contribution to the study of Turkish music in particular and Turkish history in general. Conceived as a historical ethnography, the book brings together archival sources and ethnographic materials to provide a critical revision of Turkish historiography, music providing a locus for interrogating singular representations of a national past.
