The simulation has been evaluated in terms of the statistical properties measured in a variety of turbulent boundary layer experiments and the results are generally in good agreement. Since identifical pressure histories can be created using simulations, it has been possible to investigate the influence of receiver area (or 'microphone' size) on the statistical measurements of identical pressure histories. Based on these simulations, it was possible to conclude that the root mean square pressure levels increase in a quasi linear manner as the receiver size decreases. The trend is in substantial agreement with the experiments of Bull and Thomas, but the threshold of the diameter effect and the magnitude of the r.m.s. increase may be controlled by flow phenomena that are either ignored or improperly simulated. The power spectra are insensitive to receiver size in the energy containing frequency interval. Two-point correlations first show higher correlations with decreasing receiver size, then show poorer correlations as the receiver size becomes small enough to sense fine scale phenomena. The authors believe this simulation computer program can be valuable in studying the response of complex or non-linear structures to quasi-random wall pressure fields. The ability to adjust resolution and simulated flow conditions arbitrarily make it a flexible tool in the analyzing and designing fluid-structural systems.

Detailed quantitative analysis of a variety of statistical quantities associated with the wall-pressure fluctuations revealed similar behavior for both simulations. The primary differences were associated with the lack of resolution of the high-frequency data in the coarse-grid calculation and the increased jitter (due to the lack of multiple realizations for averaging purposes) in the fine-grid calculation. Book excerpt: Pressure fluctuations associated with turbulent boundary layer have been a prominent issue over the past few decades. In order to simulate pressure fluctuations beneath a turbulent boundary layer, a numerical investigation was performed in the current study. Four different turbulence models were employed to calculate the pressure and velocity fluctuations. A new approach of direct numerical simulation (DNS) was developed, as well. The proposed DNS scheme was hybrid of sixth-order weighted compact scheme (WCS) and modified weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme, which is called modified WENO-WCS scheme (MWWS) hereafter. A variety of benchmark problems were investigated to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed numerical scheme. Several empirical/semi-empirical mean square pressure models and single-point wall-pressure spectrum models were investigated to compare mean square wall pressure values. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes based on Spalart-Allmaras (RANS-SA) and Delayed detached-eddy simulation based on Spalart-Allmaras (DDES-SA) turbulence models showed agreement with the Lowson, Lilley and Hodgson, and Goody models. Shear stress transport (RANS-SST) and DDES-SST models showed agreement with the Lowson, Farabee and Casarella, Lilley and Hodgson, and Goody models. The MWWS scheme was in agreement with Lowson and Goody models. Five single-point wall-pressure spectrum models were investigated and compared with numerical results. In low frequency region, results obtained by DDES-SA model and MWWS scheme were in agreement with the Goody model, while RANS-SA, RANS-SST, and DDES-SST turbulence models showed agreement with the Robertson model. In High frequency region, all investigated numerical methods were in agreement with the Goody and Efimtsov (1) models.

Book excerpt: Turbulent wall-bounded flows are ubiquitous in engineering and understanding and predicting their dynamics is necessary to address pressing grand challenges in aerospace, energy, and environmental science. For example, control and prediction of wall-bounded turbulence can lead to improved aerodynamic performance of air, land, and sea vehicles, increased efficiency of gas turbines used for electricity generation or propulsion, and accurate predictions of changes in the weather or climate. However, for most real applications, directly simulating the governing physics is intractably expensive even when the world's largest supercomputers are employed. The immense computational complexity of simulating turbulence is due to its multiscale nature; quantities of engineering interest, such as aerodynamic forces on a vehicle, manifest on the macroscale but they depend strongly on accurately predicting microscale phenomena such as turbulent kinetic energy dissipation. To address the high cost of direct simulations of turbulence, it is common to use physical modeling, which is the process of simplifying the governing equations and boundary conditions in order to obtain approximate variants that are computationally efficient to simulate. If the models are accurate, then the resulting solutions can be useful to make engineering design decisions at affordable cost. Specifically, this work focuses on the modeling of turbulent flows near solid boundaries since this is often the rate-limiting region which dominates the computational cost of a simulation. The direct impact of the models developed herein will be that advanced models can deliver accurate engineering predictions at reduced computational costs. To quantify this impact, we present detailed estimates of the grid-point and time-step requirements for simulations of incompressible and compressible wall-bounded flows. When paired with estimates for the growth of computational power over time, these estimates are useful for planning the types of simulations that will be tractable in the future. For the wall models developed in this work, it is assumed that the boundary-layer thickness can be computed reliably. However in complex flows, this is not trivial to define because of the inherent complexity of the background inviscid flow. In this work, a robust method for computing the boundary layer thickness is developed. The proposed method is based on estimating the inviscid base flow that leads to the actual observed viscous solution. Then, the wall-normal location of the departure of the viscous solution from the reconstructed inviscid one is labeled as the boundary layer thickness. This method is used throughout this work. Two models for the near-wall flow are presented for incompressible flows. The first model is for flows over complex geometries with strong streamwise pressure gradients. Lagrangian history effects are incorporating by introducing additional dependence of the wall model on the outer partial differential equation solver. The second model is designed for cases where computational resources are extremely limited and even the boundary layer is difficult to resolve (e.g., very high Reynolds number flows). The boundary layer wake is incorporated into the wall model to expand its domain of applicability. Both of these models are found to improve the prediction of the wall shear stress in a priori analysis. In applications with significant wall heat transfer, such as high-speed aerospace applications, wall-normal variations in density and viscosity can alter the structure of wall-bounded turbulent flows. In this work, a compressible velocity transformation is developed, which enables the mapping of a wide range of compressible velocity profiles to a single universal incompressible law of the wall. The proposed transformation is unique in that it is successful in collapsing data from channel and pipe flows and boundary layers with and without heat transfer. In addition, the inverse of this transformation is derived and applied as a wall model for large-eddy simulation. It is found that the model is significantly more accurate than the classical model, especially in applications with strong wall heat transfer.

The turbulent behavior induces pressure fluctuations that make the panels vibrate. These vibrations are then transmitted though the structure of the vehicle and radiate noise inside the cabin. The flow-induced noise levels increase with the speed of the vehicle. For this reason, aircraft manufacturers show a great interest in this topic.There are two objectives for this thesis: understand the mechanisms responsible for the wall-pressure fluctuations and predict this source of aircraft panel excitation.A study of available Large Eddy Simulation (LES) computations was performed. The database consists in simulations of turbulent boundary layer flows submitted to favorable, adverse and zero pressure gradients. This is necessary to understand the nature of the flow over curved geometries such as the aircraft flight deck. The effect of pressure gradients on coherent hairpin structures and hairpin packets could be identified and quantified based on visualization and statistical analysis methods. Linear stochastic estimation of the velocity fields revealed a pair of counter-rotating streamwise vortices above hairpin packets. These vortices have a vorticity opposite to that of the hairpins and an “inverse hairpin” model was proposed.Following the work of Ahn et al. (2010), a stochastic model for wall-pressure spectrum was developed. The idea is to build a stochastic turbulent velocity field using hairpin packets which are subjected to a mean flow. The characteristics of the packets depending on the pressure gradient are based on the analyses of the LES database. The pressure field at the wall is obtained by solving a Poisson equation. The results of the hairpin packet model are compared to numerical and experimental data. Finally, the model is used as input for a Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) simulation in order to predict the levels of vibrations of panels submitted to a turbulent boundary layer flow over a portion of an aircraft cabin.
