The equipment covers the frequency range from 2 to 70,000 cycles per second. The equipment is adaptable to all-purpose turbulence work with improved utility and accuracy over that of older types of equipment. Sample measurements are given to demonstrate the performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freestream and boundary layer measurements are made in a supersonic flow using both constant temperature (CTA) and constant voltage (CVA) anemometry. The performance of both anemometers is systematically made by operating the same hot-wire under identical conditions and applying post-test software corrections to the fluctuating measurements. In the case of the CVA the in situ time constant of the hot wire is measured to compensate the measured CVA output. The measurements show that when the signal-to-noise ratio is greater than one for both systems, the results are in very good agreement. The measurements of turbulence intensities are also in good agreement with previous studies. However the frequency at which noise dominates is lower for the CTA. Thus the CVA bandwidth is very much larger than that of the CTA. The amplitude roll-off at high frequencies is as theoretically expected. Thus it is desirable to obtain new quantitative turbulence measurements with larger bandwidth using the CVA. A rapid and automated stepping of the wire overheats is also developed for the CVA. This is an advancement over previous works that employed CTA, as the latter approach has a different bandwidth at each overheat, whereas the CVA has a fixed bandwidth. The rapid scanning method is then used to obtain calibrated measurements in a short duration wind tunnel.

Unfortunately in most flows of practical interest, local fluctuation levels exceed those for which reliable hot wire turbulence measurements can be expected. However, our recent developments in laser velocimetry facilitate the non-intrusive, linear measurement of high speed turbulent flows. Measurements of zero pressure gradient and ramp induced adverse pressure gradient flows are presented. The results emphasize the need for combined hot wire and laser velocimeter studies to determine the reliable and useful ranges of both instruments.

Book excerpt: Mean flow and compressible turbulence measurements have been obtained upstream and within a shock boundary interaction and a compression ramp in Mach 3 flow. Compressible turbulence models have met with little success in the accurate prediction of high-speed flows involving complicated shock boundary interactions and adverse pressure gradients because of a crucial lack of experimental data. Data were collected using conventional Pitot and cone static probes, single overheat cross-wire anemometry, multiple overheat cross-wire anemometry, and flow visualization techniques. Direct measurements of the total Reynolds shear stress were obtained using a turbulence transformation. Results indicate that compressibility effects, as evidenced by the density fluctuations, are large relative to the velocity fluctuations and should be accounted for rigorously in new turbulence models.
