Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The state of the art of semiconductor devices, especially tunnel diodes, is such that it is presently feasible to construct small, sensitive, low-power tuned RF microwave receivers up to and including K-band frequencies using only semiconductors as the active elements. Such a receiver might use tunnel diodes as the RF amplifier and detector and a transistor as the video amplifier. Receiver circuits of this type are shown to operate with a noise figure on the order of 5 db at frequencies at 10 Gc and above. Experiments indicate that tunnel diode operation at higher frequencies is possible, but the tunnel diodes should be physically integrated into the micro wave structures for practical operation at 35 Gc. Tunnel diodes are very promising where low-level, broadband signals are needed.

Book excerpt: The heavily doped semiconductor diode (tunnel diode) exhibits a negative resistance characteristic over a small voltage range in the forwardbiased direction, typically of the order of several tenths of a volt. A brief history is given of the discovery of this negative resistance characteristic. The nature of the discovery, essentially the tunneling effect as predicted by the theories of quantum mechanics, is discussed. Also to be considered are the basic questions of frequency limitation of the tunnel diode and its relative merits as compared with the parameteric amplifier and the maser. The analysis includes the development of the equivalent circuit and demonstrates its use. The equivalent circuit shows not only the necessary R, L, and C components but also the sources of electrical noise. The negative resistance amplifier and the frequency converter are examined for gain, bandwidth, noise figure, and stability. Finally, some general notes are presented on both the amplifier and the frequency converter, and their applications. (Autthor).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this comprehensive text is to introduce the students the physics and the operational principles as well as the characteristics, and applications of the microwave semiconductor devices. These devices are making a revolutionary change in the field of communication and radars. As a result of the accelerating rate of growth of microwave technology in research and industry, students, engineers and scientists need to understand the theoretical and experimental design and analysis of these devices. The book also deals with higher frequency microwaves called millimeter waves, which are finding wide applications in ground and satellite communication, radars and missile guidance. Millimeter wave system development is one of the most advanced technologies in radio science, especially in view of the ever increasing demand of communication and saturation of microwave frequency range with increasing number of channels. The book discusses in greater detail about the semiconductor devices such as IMPATT diodes, Gunn diodes, HEMT diodes and FET diodes. It emphasizes on various two and three terminal devices in the microwave and millimeter wave field based on silicon and Groups III-V compound semiconductors. The book is intended to serve as a textbook for undergraduate electronics and electrical engineering students and postgraduate students of physics. It would also be a valuable reference book for professional engineers and physicists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes a new concept for analyzing RF/microwave circuits, which includes RF/microwave antennas. The book is unique in its emphasis on practical and innovative microwave RF engineering applications. The analysis is based on nonlinear dynamics and chaos models and shows comprehensive benefits and results. All conceptual RF microwave circuits and antennas are innovative and can be broadly implemented in engineering applications. Given the dynamics of RF microwave circuits and antennas, they are suitable for use in a broad range of applications. The book presents analytical methods for microwave RF antennas and circuit analysis, concrete examples, and geometric examples. The analysis is developed systematically, starting with basic differential equations and their bifurcations, and subsequently moving on to fixed point analysis, limit cycles and their bifurcations. Engineering applications include microwave RF circuits and antennas in a variety of topological structures, RFID ICs and antennas, microstrips, circulators, cylindrical RF network antennas, Tunnel Diodes (TDs), bipolar transistors, field effect transistors (FETs), IMPATT amplifiers, Small Signal (SS) amplifiers, Bias-T circuits, PIN diode circuits, power amplifiers, oscillators, resonators, filters, N-turn antennas, dual spiral coil antennas, helix antennas, linear dipole and slot arrays, and hybrid translinear circuits. In each chapter, the concept is developed from the basic assumptions up to the final engineering outcomes. The scientific background is explained at basic and advanced levels and closely integrated with mathematical theory. The book also includes a wealth of examples, making it ideal for intermediate graduate level studies. It is aimed at electrical and electronic engineers, RF and microwave engineers, students and researchers in physics, and will also greatly benefit all engineers who have had no formal instruction in nonlinear dynamics, but who now desire to bridge the gap between innovative microwave RF circuits and antennas and advanced mathematical analysis methods.
