Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-strength, oxidation-resistant composites were developed for use in turbine engines at 2000F. A composite system with columbium alloy matrices and tungsten filaments was selected and evaluated for oxidation resistance and mechanical properties. These composites were intended for use in the coated condition with the oxidation-resistant matrix providing fail-safe protection. The coated composite with 27 volume percent reinforcement had excellent stress-rupture strength (100-hour rupture strength of 25 ksi at 2200F), elevated-temperature strength (33 ksi at 2600F), and isothermal-oxidation life (>1100 hours at 2000F). However, both the fail-safe life(e.g., 50 one-hour cycles at 2000F) varied with the composition of the matrix. With continued work, it should be possible to tailor the properties of this composite system so that desired properties can be optimized for specific high-temperature applications. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimization of the columbium alloy/tungsten composites has continued for general gas turbine application in the temperature range 2000 to 2400F. Major improvements have been made in hot transverse strength, control of structural stability, Izod and ballistic impact strength, creep strength, hot corrosion at 2200F, and thermal shock resistance. These improvements have been accomplished at the expense of some loss of fail-safe life for severely damaged specimens. This composite system can be optimized for specific applications by adjustment of the matrix composition and selection of tungsten filaments with specific properties. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: Many of the important developments in the joining of columbium, molybdenum, tantalum, tungsten, and graphite are summarized. Much of the subject matter is devoted to the brazing processes, but diffusion and solid-state bonding are covered also. The particular properties which recommend the refractory metals and graphite to aerospace applications are discussed. Adverse properties which limit the use of these materials or which must be overcome by using special precautions also are mentioned. Typical filler metals used to join the refractory materials for low- as well as high-temperature service conditions are covered. The information was gathered from the current literature on joining and from the open DMIC files.

Book excerpt: The concept of reinforcing a material by the use of a fiber is not a new one. The Egyptian brick layer employed the same principle more than three thousand years ago when straw was incorporated into the bricks. More recent examples of fiber reinforced composites are steel-reinforced concrete, nylon and rayon cord reinforced tires, and fiberglass reinforced plastics. In the last several years considerable progress has been made on new composite structures particularly utilizing boron (on tungsten substrate) fibers in various matrices. Many of these advances have been reviewed recently by P. M. Sinclair1 and by Alexander, Shaver, and Withers.2 An excellent earlier survey is available by Rauch Sutton, and McCreight.3 Boron-reinforced epoxy composites are being fabricated and tested as jet engine components, fuselage components, and even as a complete aircraft wing because of the tremendous gain in experimentally demonstrated properties such as modulus, strength, and fatigue resistance, particularly on a weight normalized (e.g., strength/density) basis. Other than glass/epoxy and boron/ epoxy composites and perhaps boron/aluminum, the systems now under study are in the early stages of research and development. These include other boron/metal composites, graphite/polymer, graphite/metal, graphite/graphite, alumina/metal, and aligned eutectic (directionally, solidified) combinations. As Sinclair points out, designers are wary about filamentary composites becausethere is little background information and scant experience.

Book excerpt: The program was carried out for the development of a fabricable columbium-base alloy with improved oxidation resistance and good strength-properties at 2000F and above for use as a blade material in gas turbine engines. Nineteen electron beam melted ternary alloys from the Cb-W-Ta and Cb-W-Hf systems within the composition range 10-25 percent tungsten, 15-30 percent tantalum, 2-35 percent hafnium, were evaluated for fabricability, tensile and creep-rupture strength properties, and oxidation resistance. Book excerpt: Interfaces in Metal Matrix Composites, Volume 1 presents the position of the science of interfaces, as well as the necessary background for the effort in progress to apply these materials. The book discusses the mechanical and physical aspects of the interface; the effect of the interface on longitudinal tensile properties; and the effect of the filament-matrix interface on off-axis tensile strength. The text also describes the role of the interface on elastic-plastic composite behavior; the effect of interface on fracture; and the interfaces in oxide reinforced metals and in directionally solidified eutectics. The effect of impurity on reinforcement-matrix compatibility is also considered. Metallurgical engineers and people involved in the study of materials science will find the book invaluable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two categories of properties pertaining to selected refractory alloy systems are presented. First, the alloys were screened as to their usefulness as high-temperature structural materials. Measurements of hot-hardness and oxidation resistance of arc-cast specimens delineated areas within the tungsten-tantalum-columbium ternary system combining high hardness at temperatures up to 2900 F. with improved oxidation resistance at 2190 F. The addition of tungsten and titanium improved the oxidation resistance of tantalum at 1830 and 2190 F., probably because of the formation of complex oxides in the outer scale. The second area concerned mechanical properties of tungsten or columbium at low and intermediate temperatures. The low-temperature yield properties of tungsten were studied, employing a compression test. Static strain-aging of tungsten at 400 to 600 C. was attributed to hydrogen. Dynamic strain-ading of columbium-oxygen alloys occurred at 300 to 400 C., while the addition of titanium, zirconium, and vanadium to columbium was found to shift the strain-aging region to 700 to 800 C.
