Book excerpt: A new class of room-temperature, diode-pumped solid state lasers, that are broadly tunable in the mid-infrared spectral region, has been conceptualized and demonstrated. These lasers are based on intra-ion transitions of divalent transition metals placed in substitutional cation sites of tetrahedral symmetry in large bandgap chalcogenide semiconductor crystals. These combinations of laser-ions and host crystals are seen to provide favorable radiative and non-radiative transition processes for the realization of the desired laser performance characteristics. Spectroscopic data for candidate schemes are reviewed and divalent chromium doped zinc chalcogenides are identified as potentially superior laser candidates. Preparation of laser quality Cr{sup 2+}:ZnSe crystals is described and experimental results to date for a diode-pumped laser are given. Remaining laser development issues are discussed briefly.

Book excerpt: A tunable CW laser is desired to produce light equivalent to the helium spectral line at 1.08 microns. This laser will serve as an optical pumping source for He-3 and He-4 atoms used in space magnetometers. This light source can be fabricated either as a semiconductor laser diode or a pumped solid state laser. Continuous output power of greater than 10 mW is desired. Semiconductor lasers can be thermally tuned, but must be capable of locking onto the helium resonance lines. Solid state lasers must have efficient pumping sources suitable for space configuration. Additional requirements are as follows: space magnetometer applications will include low mass (less than 0.5 kg), low power consumption (less than 0.75 W), and high stability/reliability for long missions (5-10 years). Book excerpt: Diode-pumped solid-state lasers are highly recommended for a variety of industrial and scientific applications as they can offer high efficiency and excellent beam quality. However, power scaling of these lasers is a challenging task. The main limitation in power scaling of famous neodymium doped lasers such as Nd:YVO4 is the thermal lensing effect. Thermal lensing degrades the output beam quality and in extreme cases can result in crystal fracture. One potential solution to this problem is to reduce the induced heat load inside the gain media by decreasing the quantum defect. This was demonstrated successfully for the Nd:YVO4 laser by pumping the laser at a long wavelength of 914 nm instead of the traditional pumping at 808 nm wavelength. Among the Nd-doped crystals operating in the near infrared range, the crystal of yttrium lithium fluoride (Nd:YLF) is another interesting gain medium as it has the benefits of natural birefringence (can generate naturally polarized laser beam), negative dn/dT (reduces thermal effects) and long upper level lifetime (in favor of Q-switched operation). In this work we used a long wavelength pumping approach and for the first time examined the performance of a continuous-wave Nd:YLF laser at 1047 nm under 908 nm diode pumping. This pumping wavelength reduced the quantum defect by 50% as compared to the conventional 808 nm pumping. The laser produced an output power of 850 mW at 1047 nm with excellent beam quality and 625 mW at 1053 nm. The slope efficiency was ~73.9% and 46% for 1047 and 1053 nm, respectively. Therefore, a considerable power scaling is possible for Nd:YLF crystals owing to the strongly reduced quantum defect and, hence, thermal lensing.

Book excerpt: During the interim period of this bridging contract, we have continued to work on the development of high-power cw diode-laser-array-pumped solid-state lasers. Towards that end, we have built lower power lasers in order to test individual components needed for the high-power laser, specifically we have built a 1 watt ring laser and a 5 watt slab laser. The 1 watt laser was used to study the injection locking process while assembling all the necessary electronics. We have demonstrated that it is possible to injection lock a diode- pumped laser using a single piezo-mounted mirror due to the lower intrinsic laser noise compared to an arc-lamp-pumped system. This allows us to optimize the injection locking servo loop and build a more stable locking system. The 5 watt laser was used as a test bed to find a practical way to mount the slab laser while minimizing the losses that occur at the total internal reflection (TIR) points in the slab. After trying many different means of protecting the TIR surfaces, we found that a new product from DuPont, Teflon AF 1600, has all the properties needed to provide a low loss protective coating. Using this material, the laser had a cavity loss of below 2%, which allowed for efficient operation of the laser in a side-pumped design. This laser produced 5 watts of output power with a slope efficiency near 20%.

Book excerpt: In this paper, the authors report on a diode-side-pumped Er:YAG laser that generates over 500 mW of average power at 2.94 [mu]m, and tunes over a 6 nm range centered about the 2.94-[mu]m transition. Prior to the development of the laser, diode-pumped Er:YAG lasers have been end-pumped monolithic devices that deliver [approximately]200 mW of output at 2.94 [mu]m. Much of the difficulty in obtaining higher average power from Er:YAG stems from the unfavorable lifetimes of the upper and lower laser levels, the complex state dynamics, and a low stimulated emission cross section ([sigma] [approx] 3 [times] 10[sup [minus]20] cm[sup 2]). One of the most important dynamical processes in Er:YAG is cross relaxation between neighboring Er[sup 3+] ions in the [sup 4]I[sub 13/2] level. By recycling much of the [sup 4]I[sub 13/2] population (lower laser level) into [sup 4]I[sub 11/2] (upper laser level), the cross relaxation overcomes the unfavorable lifetimes of the two levels, allowing the population inversion to be sustained. It is this cross relaxation along with thermalization of the two laser levels that allows cw oscillation on the 2.94 [mu]m line to take place. The laser that they describe here is a quasi-cw device as the approach to obtaining higher average power and limited tunability relies on side pumping with a quasi-cw InGaAs laser diode array. In this way, a higher gain-length product is generated, which is necessary for extending the tuning range of the laser, and for overcoming the higher losses associated with a discreet-element resonator.

Book excerpt: During the past three years we have made substantial progress toward the goal of a fiber coupled, diode laser pumped 1OOW cw Nd:YAG minislab laser. We have diode pumped a 1W ring cavity laser and have operated it in a single frequency. We have diode pumped a testbed minislab Nd:YAG laser using fiber coupled diode laser bars and generated 5W of cw, TEMoo mode output power. We have designed and are implementing a 5OW cw minislab Nd:YAG laser to be pumped by 25 diode laser bars coupled through optical fibers. We plan, in the second phase of this program, to achieve the 1OOW cw output power level in a minislab Nd:YAG laser approach proposed as the goal of this research program In addition, we have demonstrated single frequency control of a high power Nd:YAG laser oscillator by injection locking; have frequency stabilized Nd:YAG oscillators by locking to high finesse Fabry Perot resonators; have absolutely stabilized Nd:YAG to one part in 10 to the -13th power by locking to iodine; have frequency converted Nd:YAG by second harmonic generation to 11.2W of cw TEMoo mode green output; have demonstrated the first cw 2 microns OPO in lithium niobate; and have demonstrated the first cw singly resonant OPO with 2W of output in a single frequency in KTP.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diode pumping of solid state media offers the opportunity for very low maintenance, high efficiency, and compact laser systems. For remote sensing, such lasers may be used to pump tunable non-linear sources, or if tunable themselves, act directly or through harmonic crystals as the probe. The needs of long range remote sensing missions require laser performance in the several watts to kilowatts range. At these power performance levels, more advanced thermal management technologies are required for the diode pumps. The solid state laser design must now address a variety of issues arising from the thermal loads, including fracture limits, induced lensing and aberrations, induced birefringence, and laser cavity optical component performance degradation with average power loading. In order to highlight the design trade-offs involved in addressing the above issues, a variety of existing average power laser systems are briefly described. Included are two systems based on Spectra Diode Laboratory's water impingement cooled diode packages: a two times diffraction limited, 200 watt average power, 200 Hz multi-rod laser/amplifier by Fibertek, and TRW's 100 watt, 100 Hz, phase conjugated amplifier. The authors also present two laser systems built at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) based on their more aggressive diode bar cooling package, which uses microchannel cooler technology capable of 100% duty factor operation. They then present the design of LLNL's first generation OPO pump laser for remote sensing. This system is specified to run at 100 Hz, 20 nsec pulses each with 300 mJ, less than two times diffraction limited, and with a stable single longitudinal mode. The performance of the first testbed version will be presented. The authors conclude with directions their group is pursuing to advance average power lasers. This includes average power electro-optics, low heat load lasing media, and heat capacity lasers.

Book excerpt: The new class of diode-pumped alkali vapor lasers (DPALs) offers high efficiency cw laser radiation at near-infrared wavelengths: cesium 895 nm, rubidium 795 nm, and potassium 770 nm. The working physical principles of DPALs will be presented. Initial 795 nm Rb and 895 nm Cs laser experiments performed using a titanium sapphire laser as a surrogate pump source demonstrated DPAL slope power conversion efficiencies in the 50-70% range, in excellent agreement with device models utilizing only literature spectroscopic and kinetic data. Using these benchmarked models for Rb and Cs, optimized DPALs with optical-optical efficiencies>60%, and electrical efficiencies of 25-30% are projected. DPAL device architectures for near-diffraction-limited power scaling into the high kilowatt power regime from a single aperture will be described. DPAL wavelengths of operation offer ideal matches to silicon and gallium arsenide based photovoltaic power conversion cells for efficient power beaming.
