Book Synopsis Pastoral Australia by : Michael Pearson
Download or read book Pastoral Australia written by Michael Pearson and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2010 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastoral Australiatells the story of the expansion of Australia's pastoral industry, how it drove European settlement and involved Aboriginal people in the new settler society. The rural life that once saw Australia "ride on the sheep's back" is no longer what defines Australians, yet it is largely their history as a pastoral nation that has endured in heritage places and which is embedded in their self-image as Australians. The challenges of sustaining a pastoral industry in Australia make a compelling story of their own. Developing livestock breeds able to prosper in the Australian environment was an ongoing challenge, as was getting wool and meat to market. Many stock routes, wool stores, abattoirs, wharf facilities, railways, roads, and river and ocean transport systems that were developed to link the pastoral interior with the urban and market infrastructure still survive. Windmills, fences, homesteads, shearing sheds, bores, stock yards, traveling stock routes, bush roads and railheads all changed the look of the country. These features of the landscape are symbols of a pastoral Australia, and of the foundations of a national identity, which will endure long into the future. Key features * Outlines the history of pastoralism from 1788 to 1967 in an accessible way * Links the history to the many and varied surviving sites and landscape features created by it, which are now part of the heritage * Tells the story of involvement of Aboriginal people in pastoralism, particularly in northern Australia * Puts pastoralism into the context of Australia's development as a nation

Book Synopsis What Is Tommy Thinking? by : Pastor Gil Splett
Download or read book What Is Tommy Thinking? written by Pastor Gil Splett and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2016-12-02 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With insightfulness, artistry, and grace, Pastor Gil Splett weaves stories that children can understand, stories that allow adults to listen in and enter more deeply into the paschal mystery. Whether he writes (and draws!) of Tommy stumbling in the dark at scout camp and learning about the light of Christ that guides him or lying on the grass, looking up at the stars, and reflecting on the largeness of heaven, Tommy always has something to learnand more, something to pass on to other children. I have personally witnessed Pastor Gil weaving his craft. Children identify with Tommy, the little boy with a big heart who plays like them, questions and learns like them, and is always surprised like them. Children enjoy listening as Pastor Gil shares his Tommy stories and watches in awe as he draws the story for them on a whiteboard, allowing Tommy to come alive right before their eyes. What a wonderful way to preach to childrento preach to all of us!

Book Synopsis Tommy's Sunset by : Hisako Tsurushima
Download or read book Tommy's Sunset written by Hisako Tsurushima and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2008-09-05 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tommy's Sunset is a translation of the acclaimed Japanese novel about the journey of a mother and her autistic child. Drawing from her own personal life story, Hisako Tsurushima has provided a definitive work about the problems and surprising joys for the autistic and those who love them. Readers experience the range of emotions as Tommy and his mother are routinely embarrassed in social situations and share delight in private moments. As she lovingly describes these characters, Tsurushima ultimately investigates the source of our social responses to people who are in any way different than ourselves. Tommy's Sunset was the basis for the Japanese Film Gakko III, which was shown in the United States under the title The New Voyage. Tommy's Sunset is a deceptively simple novel that will leave readers with a lasting impression and a new outlook on what it means to be different.

Book Synopsis War, Virtual War and Society by : Andrew R. Wilson
Download or read book War, Virtual War and Society written by Andrew R. Wilson and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2008 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rarely do academics and policymakers have the opportunity to sit down together and contemplate the broadest consequences of war. Our comprehension has traditionally been limited to war's causes, execution, promotion, opposition, and immediate political and economic ends and aftermath. But just as public health researchers are becoming aware of unexpected, subtle and powerful consequences of human economic action, we are beginning to realize that war has many short- and long-term consequences that we poorly understand but cannot afford to neglect. These papers contribute to a growing discourse among academics, scholars and lawmakers that is questioning and rethinking the nature and purpose of war. By studying the effects of war on communities we can more readily understand and anticipate the consequences of present and future conflicts. Such an understanding might well enable us to plan and execute military action with a more clearly defined set of post-war goals in mind. Whereas traditionally a government at war seeks the defeat of the adversary as its primary and often sole aim, through a clearer understanding of war's effects other aims will also become prominent. War, like surgery, could gradually become more refined, could minimize damage in ways that are currently unimaginable, and could involve an increasingly heavy responsibility to prepare for and facilitate reconstruction. Projects such as this volume are, of course, only the beginning. The more we understand the evolving nature of war, the better prepared we will be to protect communities from its harmful effects.
