Book excerpt: While square-rigged sailing ships, steamboats and ferries, and ever-larger cruise and cargo-carrying vessels have made their mark on Puget Sound's maritime history, no other vessels have captured the imagination of shore-bound seafarers like tugboats. Beginning in the 1850s when the first steam-powered tugboats arrived in the Sound from the East Coast via San Francisco, company owners and their crews competed fiercely for business, towing ships, log rafts, and barges. The magnetic attraction of powerful, tough tugs both large and small is unexplainable but enduring. This book, featuring about 200 rare historic images and carefully researched text, tells the colorful story of tug boating on Puget Sound.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a time in the first half of the 20th century, commercial vessels powered by sail, steam, and internal combustion engines were all plying their trade together on Puget Sound. During those earlier years, mills were busy sawing logs to satisfy the hungry market for lumber, plywood, and other wood products. Boat building and commercial fishing flourished, too. As time went on, wind power gave way to steam propulsion, steam machinery was replaced by internal combustion engines, and paddle wheels disappeared in favor of propellers. This was a unique and exciting era of Puget Sound maritime activity. Eventually, logs were being shipped instead of finished wood products, transportation via highways was increasing, and the fisheries were beginning to show signs that all was not well. Because of these changes, the need was lessened for tugs, freight and passenger boats, and fishing boats on Puget Sound.

The salty environment creates a life that begins with a smile, some blisters and the genius needed for survival. Working with a crew on his tug boat, caring for his family, maintaining the boat, and the business of moving timber from forest to mill on the waters of Puget Sound require keen observation of a continually changing environment, as well as a love for the work and a willingness to do hard work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the advent of roads in western Washington, steamboats of the Mosquito Fleet swarmed all over Puget Sound. Sidewheelers, stern-wheelers, and propeller-driven, they ranged from the tiny 40-foot Marie to the huge 282-foot Yosemite, and from the famous Flyer to the unknown Leota. Floating stores like the Vaughn and shrimpers like the Violet sailed the same waters as the elegant Great Lakes lady, the Chippewa, and the homely Willie. A few, like the Bob Irving and Blue Star, died spectacularly or, like Major Tompkins, shipwrecked after a short time, while others began new lives as tugboats or auto ferries; some even survive today as excursion boats like the Virginia V. From 1853 to modern car ferries in the 1920s, this volume chronicles the heyday of steamboating--a unique segment of maritime history--from modest launch to sleek liner.

Book excerpt: Having grown up on a farm in Skagit Valley, Captain Gerald (aka "Jerry") Bell graduated from La Conner High School in 1958. He currently resides in Western Washington. Hired by Dunlap Towing in 1959, Jerry worked the next 50 years on tugboats. He spent the first ten years working his way from deckhand to mate and then from mate to part time captain. Once promoted to captain, Jerry continued to work another 40 years at that position. He has worked almost every inch of the Pacific Coast, (including inlets, bays, harbors and rivers) from Ketchikan, Alaska to Los Angeles, California. 1959 to 1969 were spent towing logs, gravel barges and freight barges for Dunlap Towing. After that time (1970 to 1998), the next twenty-eight years were spent towing freight barges for Puget Sound Freight Lines. When Puget Sound Freight Lines went out of business in 1998, Jerry was forced to transition to towing oil barges for the next six years at Olympic Tug and Barge (1998 to 2004). The final six years of his career (2004 to 2010) were spent at Pacific Northwest Marine Services where he towed scrap metal barges between the Fraser River in British Columbia, Canada and Tacoma, Washington. He included some history along with sea stories and a scattering of humor. Jerry retired in December of 2010 and began to write his Memoir on January 18th, 2011.
