Book excerpt: Truths and Untruths of Evolution written by John Benjamin Drury is an interesting look at the science and theory of evolution through a religious lens. The book features several lectures that were originally delivered before the students of the Theological Seminary in New Brunswick and at Rutgers College. Each lecture tackles the subject of evolution and is a masterful attempt to dissect the truth of evolution from the myriad of false theories (as Drury sees them). Running as a central theme throughout the lectures, Drury's main argument concerns the co-existence of the theory of Evolution and religious belief. In particular, Drury highlights the misconception of mutual exclusion between the two and argues that, "In the discussion I have sought to be just and fair to science as well as to religion. As the reader will see, instead of combating Evolution as altogether inadmissible, I concede a possibility of its truthfulness, and aim to show that a believer in God and a Revelation has nothing to fear from it as a foe to religion, when its postulates are freed from assumptions, and its truths are separated from its untruths." John Benjamin Drury's book Truths and Untruths of Evolution is an intriguing read for individuals exploring evolution theory and science through the eyes of religion. Can the two co-exist? For Drury they can and he hopes to prove that to any reader who picks up this text. This book is definitely an exciting read for scholars of religion, science, and those with only a passing interest in either topic. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. It really does not matter. What matters is the quality of thinking you do to justify your position. We take our beliefs and our labels very seriously; and we should, for after all they are ours, they represent our very selves. And yet, not too seriously; for we may be worrying unnecessarily about beliefs and labels that are not truly our own. We may have picked them up inadvertently. They may have been stuck into our pockets during a fit of abstraction. They may have been sold to us when we were off guard. All sorts of very nice people have this belief, or that one. It's quite all right for you to have your belief, whatever it is. But how did you come by it? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Challenging leading scientific theories that claim that our senses report back objective reality, cognitive scientist Donald Hoffman argues that while we should take our perceptions seriously, we should not take them literally. From examining why fashion designers create clothes that give the illusion of a more “attractive” body shape to studying how companies use color to elicit specific emotions in consumers, and even dismantling the very notion that spacetime is objective reality, The Case Against Reality dares us to question everything we thought we knew about the world we see.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution Versus Involution: A Popular Exposition of the Doctrine of True Evolution, a Refutation of the Theories of Herbert Spencer; And a Vindication of Theism In the hands Of its principal expounders, the doctrine has ar rayed itself unblushingly against the highest and, most sacred truths known to-man thus was inaugurated that conflict between religion and science, so-called, which still rages. The so-called Evolutionists, putting their own interpretations upon the truths Of nature, affirmed that here was no alternative: that religious teachers must either give up t eir Religion Or reject the positive revelations Of Science. Called upon to weigh the Higher by the Lower, could there be a doubt as to the decision Of a truly high-souled man well grounded in the teachings Of religion and the axioms Of morality Evolution was unhesitatingly branded as false; they preferred the light Of the noon-day sun to the flickering Of a taper! SO long as the doctrine Of Evolution received the one-sided interpretation placed upon it by the antagonists Of revealed religion, ' SO long did religious teachers preach a crusade against that which threatened the best interests Of Humanity. But these false interpreters Of scientific truth are rapidly giving place to a set Of men who, equally armed with the weapons Of science, see in the theory Of Evolution nothing which is in conflict with the truths of revealed religion. The writer of this work, in the course Of his studies, became more and more convinced that the conclusions arrived at by Mr. Spencer and others were essentially false - that their system, in a word, was not one Of Evolution at all, but a theory Of Involution. On reading Mr. Spencer's First Principles, I learned that he himself recognized this, and acknowledged it in so many words. (see First Principles, 2d edition, p. Smuskiewicz and published by BookLocker.com, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-05-30 with total page 861 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past several years, since the mid-2010s, America and Americans have gone through astonishing, unprecedented political, geopolitical, societal, and cultural changes. BLM, Antifa, transgenders, diversity equity inclusion, Trump derangement syndrome, rigged elections, an “insurrection,” COVID crackdowns, vaccine mandates, assaults on free speech, political persecutions and prosecutions, mainstream media propaganda, the merger of state and corporate power, and reckless involvement in foreign wars that threaten to launch World War III. These events raise serious doubts about the sanity of the U.S. and Western elites who are driving the changes, and they point to the precipitous decline of America and its “Empire of Lies,” as Vladimir Putin has labeled it. Chicago-based freelance educational writer and political commentator A.J. Smuskiewicz has carefully observed it all. He has evaluated, re-evaluated, and documented his evolving perspectives on the national and international chaos in this collection of essays, compiled from his published works during the momentous period of 2014 to 2024. The essays offer his unique, distinctly personal insights on the profound issues of the day (and some not-so-profound issues), with an unusual, highly individualistic mix of Right and Left ideas, of conservative, libertarian, and revolutionary radical views. Smuskiewicz compiled this collection as America was in the midst of another wild and weird election season—with one candidate facing possible imprisonment, a second candidate apparently struggling with dementia, and a third candidate posing a threat to both. Where could America and the world be headed? These essays will help to give you the background knowledge and frame of reference you need to understand and deal with whatever the hell is going to happen in this Empire of Lies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural Theology of Evolution Most persons who are disposed to be religious find it an easy thing to see the hand of God in the works of nature. To them it is pleasant and profitable to contemplate the world as Gods handiwork, and they are disposed to offer the marks of design which it shows as a convincing proof of His existence. The attempt to present this proof in a clear and orderly way has given rise to Natural Theology, a study which, until quite recently, was in high repute and esteem. It attained, perhaps, to its maximum of influence with the publication of Paley's Natural Theology, a remarkable work which put the argument from design in the plainest and clearest terms, and which was everywhere accepted as conclusive. It was accompanied and followed by many other works from which we may learn how highly Natural Theology was esteemed and how widely it was studied; of these the Bridgwater Treatises are, perhaps, the most famous. But this era of exceptional triumph and brilliancy did not last long. It may be said to have come to an end with the publication on the 24th of November, 1859, of Darwin's Origin of Species. As that book became well known the influence of Natural Theology declined. It was felt that the whole argument had lost its force, and that the appearance of plan and contrivance in Nature was fully and satisfactorily accounted for without any necessity for attributing it to conscious design. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preference falsification, according to the economist Timur Kuran, is the act of misrepresenting one's wants under perceived social pressures. It happens frequently in everyday life, such as when we tell the host of a dinner party that we are enjoying the food when we actually find it bland. In Private Truths, Public Lies Kuran argues convincingly that the phenomenon not only is ubiquitous but has huge social and political consequences. Drawing on diverse intellectual traditions, including those rooted in economics, psychology, sociology, and political science, Kuran provides a unified theory of how preference falsification shapes collective decisions, orients structural change, sustains social stability, distorts human knowledge, and conceals political possibilities. A common effect of preference falsification is the preservation of widely disliked structures. Another is the conferment of an aura of stability on structures vulnerable to sudden collapse. When the support of a policy, tradition, or regime is largely contrived, a minor event may activate a bandwagon that generates massive yet unanticipated change. In distorting public opinion, preference falsification also corrupts public discourse and, hence, human knowledge. So structures held in place by preference falsification may, if the condition lasts long enough, achieve increasingly genuine acceptance. The book demonstrates how human knowledge and social structures co-evolve in complex and imperfectly predictable ways, without any guarantee of social efficiency. Private Truths, Public Lies uses its theoretical argument to illuminate an array of puzzling social phenomena. They include the unexpected fall of communism, the paucity, until recently, of open opposition to affirmative action in the United States, and the durability of the beliefs that have sustained India's caste system.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of Evolution: Its Basis and Its Scope The present volume consists of a series of eight addresses delivered as the Hewitt Lectures of Columbia University at Cooper Union in New York City during the months of February and March, 1907. The purpose of these lectures was to describe in concise outline the Doctrine of Evolution, its basis in the facts of natural history, and its wide and universal scope. They fall naturally into two groups. Those of the first part deal with matters of definition, with the essential character istics of living things, and, at greater length, with the evidences of organic evolution. The lectures of the second group take up the various aspects of human evolution as a special instance of the general organic process. In this latter part of the series, the subject of physical evolution is first considered, and this is followed by an analysis of human mental evolution; the chapter on social evolution extends the funda mental principles to a field which is not usually con sidered by biologists, and its purpose is to demonstrate the efficiency of the genetic method in this department as in all others; finally, the principles are extended to what is called the higher human life, the realm, namely, of ethical, religious, and theological ideas and ideals.
