Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantitative thinking is our inclination to view natural and everyday phenomena through a lens of measurable events, with forecasts, odds, predictions, and likelihood playing a dominant part. The Error of Truth recounts the astonishing and unexpected tale of how quantitative thinking came to be, and its rise to primacy in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Additionally, it considers how seeing the world through a quantitative lens has shaped our perception of the world we live in, and explores the lives of the individuals behind its early establishment. This worldview was unlike anything humankind had before, and it came about because of a momentous human achievement: we had learned how to measure uncertainty. Probability as a science was conceptualised. As a result of probability theory, we now had correlations, reliable predictions, regressions, the bellshaped curve for studying social phenomena, and the psychometrics of educational testing. Significantly, these developments happened during a relatively short period in world history— roughly, the 130-year period from 1790 to 1920, from about the close of the Napoleonic era, through the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolutions, to the end of World War I. At which time, transportation had advanced rapidly, due to the invention of the steam engine, and literacy rates had increased exponentially. This brief period in time was ready for fresh intellectual activity, and it gave a kind of impetus for the probability inventions. Quantification is now everywhere in our daily lives, such as in the ubiquitous microchip in smartphones, cars, and appliances; in the Bayesian logic of artificial intelligence, as well as applications in business, engineering, medicine, economics, and elsewhere. Probability is the foundation of quantitative thinking. The Error of Truth tells its story— when, why, and how it happened.

Book excerpt: This book is not only an introduction to the entire Zondervan Guide to Cults and Religious Movements series, but also a quick-reference guide to the groups and movements discussed in the series. Truth and Error brings together in one volume the charts from the various guides that show how the groups and movements differ theologically from historic orthodox Christianity. Each chart is introduced by the general editor, Alan Gomes. The books in the series that do not have comparison charts are introduced and summarized. Each book in the series includes - A concise introduction to the group or topic - An overview of the group's or movement's theology -- in their own words - A biblical response - Tips for witnessing effectively to members of the group - A bibliography with sources for further study -- Most books also include a comparison chart that shows the essential differences between biblical Christianity and the group. The charts from these books are reproduced in Truth & Error.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of the bestselling novel The Shack and the New York Times bestsellers Cross Roads and Eve comes a compelling, conversational exploration of twenty-eight assumptions about God—assumptions that just might be keeping us from experiencing His unconditional, all-encompassing love. In his wildly popular novels, Wm. Paul Young portrayed the Triune God in ways that challenged our thinking—sometimes upending long-held beliefs, but always centered in the eternal, all-encompassing nature of God’s love. Now, in Wm. Paul Young’s first nonfiction book, he invites us to revisit our assumptions about God—this time using the Bible, theological discussion, and personal anecdotes. Paul encourages us to think through beliefs we’ve presumed to be true and consider whether some might actually be false. Expounding on the compassion fans felt from the “Papa” portrayed in The Shack—now a major film starring Sam Worthington and Octavia Spencer—Paul encourages you to think anew about important issues including sin, religion, hell, politics, identity, creation, human rights, and helping us discover God’s deep and abiding love.

The trivial round, the common task, Would furnish all we ought to ask; Room to deny ourselves, a road To bring us daily nearer God. KebU. Let us, then, be up and doing, With a heart for any fate; Still achieving, still pursuing, Learn to labour and to wait. Longfellow. VEN the sunny June days seemed hardly long enough for the amount of pleasure devoted to each. Mills procured a couple more ponies, and gave a daily riding lesson to Minnie and Arthur, so that they were soon able to accompany their cousin, whose rides were no longer solitary; and to the little town-bred boy and girl the fun of scampering over the country was untold. But everything must have an end; ere long Mrs. Layton began to talk of going home, a month's absence was hitherto an unheard-of proceeding, and she longed for her husband and children. However the time was fast approaching for the arrival of her nephew in his new curacy, and she was persuaded to remain till then, partly by a faint hope held out by Dr. Layton, that he might possibly come for her and stay a few days. Colonel and Mrs. Clemence had warmly invited Gerald Layton to take up his abode at the Abbey, but he declined, preferring a far humbler place where he would be his own master, and wrote, commissioning his aunt to choose some quiet respectable lodging for him in the village. Ethel's heart was immediately set on a cottage, which from her earliest recollection, had been her beau ideal of country felicity. It was a good-sized comfortable house, covered with creepers, the porch full of bright flowers, and the garden trim and tidy; finally its name, Woodbine Cottage, sounded prettily, and the only difficulty was whether its owner would be willing to take a lodger, but this wa...

The Bible plainly reveals the errors and false teachings that Christians will be expected to identify and defend against. Learn to recognize the counterfeits through the light of God's truth. Christians often wonder why certain religious groups are called "cults" or are said to have "cultic teachings." The answer is fairly simple. The Scripture mentions 10 key Christian beliefs that cult leaders or aberrant teachers ignore or twist. You will learn each of these 10 beliefs and be able to give examples of truth vs. counterfeit teachings. The 10 Common Doctrinal Errors include: False Gospels, False Doctrine, False Gods, False Christs, False Spirits, False Prophets, False Apostles, False Teachers, False Visions, and False Miracles.

The Apostles' Creed has shaped and guided Christian faith for almost two thousand years. Shared by Protestant, Roman Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox traditions, it is perhaps the most compelling statement of Christian doctrine the world has ever known. But do we know what it really means—and how it applies to us today? In The Apostles' Creed, renowned theologian and pastor R. Albert Mohler Jr. works line-by-line and phrase-by-phrase through each section of the Creed, revealing the rich truths it contains, including: the profound mystery of the Trinity the miracle of the Incarnation the world-shaking truth of the resurrection the hope of Christ's return the theological heritage contained in this ancient statement The Apostles’ Creed is an often-overlooked treasure that contains the power to shape us for vibrant and steadfast living today, equipping believers to live faithfully in a post-Christian culture.

Book excerpt: Ever since the dawn of time on earth, human beings have been in the dark""spiritually, intellectually, educationally, and relationally. The only cause for these general human handicaps on earth is our general ignorance of the Bible""the only book with accurate records on nature/existence ever written and given to all human beings on earth. There is no doubt that the Bible alone holds the truths to all the lies in the world, the solutions to all the problems in the world, and the answers to all the questions that the whole world has been asking since the inception of time on earth. The hour has come for the seeming encryptions of the Bible that have resisted for ages past all human efforts toward proper understanding to be uncovered. This means then that all these lies that the world has had, which has locked itself up with these many unsolved problems and unanswered questions, will now be gone forever. Thanks be to God, who has come down to earth to explain for us, human beings, the book (the Bible) whose one and only Author is He. In that case, both the ever unsolved problems and the unanswered questions of all humanity will receive the solutions and the answers that it has longed for, as these lies""which are the errors and wrong opinions of the churches""are being discovered and corrected. Consequently, we can then live up to God's mandate of subduing with correct knowledge the earth that is presently under the sway of Satan and his spirit allies, and thus rescuing the world from the societal confusions that it is presently in today. These are the goals this book and others in the offing are meant to achieve for us henceforth.
