Book excerpt: Andrew Carpenter was a celebrity doctor, a star in his field. Now he's dead, killed in a hit-and-run on the streets of Manhattan. The police think it was an accident, but his devastated wife is sure it was murder. Private detective Nathaniel Singer agrees to take the case. Singer had once dreamed of being a poet, but he's discovered that his true calling is the art of saving lives. He soon discovers that Carpenter had powerful, frightening enemies—and powerful, frightening friends. And he soon finds himself caught up in a world of trouble. In The Scent of Blood, the first Nathaniel Singer novel, this literate, funny detective takes his place within the great tradition of the PI novel—a worthy successor to Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe and Robert B. Parker’s Spenser. PRAISE FOR SCENT OF BLOOD: "It's hard to imagine a reader who won't be thoroughly satisfied."—Booklist "With this literate and engrossing thriller, Raymond Miller makes an impressive entrance onto the private-eye stage…he will certainly emerge as one of the genre's major players." –San Diego Times-Union "A welcome addition to the ranks of hardboiled private eyes with a softer side." –Kirkus Reviews "Justice and suffering, guilt and regret are entwined in a plot worthy of Raymond Chandler or Ruth Rendell." -- The Mystery Reader "Intelligent, funny, and compassionate…breathes new life into the PI novel...[A] rare combination of humor and depth." -- Mystery Scene "Raymond Miller understands the classic hardboiled detective novel...The Scent of Blood balances emotional distress, heated violence and philosophical quandaries, but still manages a breezy and light-hearted tone. Miller's having a grand time playing with the genre." -- The Washington Post "A fresh new take on a classic structure--like hearing a twelve-bar blues played by a great new talent." –Lee Child, author of the Jack Reacher series

Book excerpt: Women's liberation sought to transform every sector of U.S. society--its educational system, culture, language, politics, and, importantly, the delivery of social services. To enable this movement, women all over the country began to establish women's centers. In New York City, women from almost every local women's liberation group took over an abandoned building in lower Manhattan on New Year's Eve, 1970. They named the building The Fifth Street Women's Building and renovated it to feed, clothe, shelter, and educate women in need. The take-over was a huge success, attracting hundreds of activists and community members. Thirteen days later, the New York City Tactical Police stormed the building, expelled the women, and ended the action. The City then tore the building down and built a parking lot on the site. June Arnold was one of the original planners and an active participant in this episode. When she got out of jail, she went home and wrote this novel about what happened. The Cook and the Carpenter, which quickly gained fame for its use of a non- gendered language, remains one of the best representations of the time period that berthed modern feminism and paved the way for lesbian communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the '60s and '70s, America's music scene was marked by raucous excess, reflected in the tragic overdoses of young superstars such as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. At the same time, the uplifting harmonies and sunny lyrics that propelled Karen Carpenter and her brother, Richard, to international fame belied a different sort of tragedy—the underconsumption that led to Karen's death at age thirty-two from the effects of an eating disorder. In Why Karen Carpenter Matters, Karen Tongson (whose Filipino musician parents named her after the pop icon) interweaves the story of the singer’s rise to fame with her own trans-Pacific journey between the Philippines—where imitations of American pop styles flourished—and Karen Carpenter’s home ground of Southern California. Tongson reveals why the Carpenters' chart-topping, seemingly whitewashed musical fantasies of "normal love" can now have profound significance for her—as well as for other people of color, LGBT+ communities, and anyone outside the mainstream culture usually associated with Karen Carpenter’s legacy. This hybrid of memoir and biography excavates the destructive perfectionism at the root of the Carpenters’ sound, while finding the beauty in the singer's all too brief life.

Book excerpt: The Tides of Truth series follows one lawyer's passionate pursuit of truth--in matters of life and the law. Competition is tough at the Savannah law firm where Tami Taylor serves as a law clerk. But Tami's work sets her apart--and the firm's partners see something special in her. So they assign her to a libel case against an abrasive, outspoken preacher who is either a prophet or a lunatic. On the surface it appears to be an open and shut case; the preacher seems fully outside the bounds of law. And Tami's strict religious upbringing could be the firm's ace-in-the-hole. But as the investigation continues, Tami is troubled by the preacher's uncanny prophetic abilities. And their client seems to be hiding something. Tami returns to her hometown, struggling with several critical choices--as two very different men from the firm vie for her heart. Just when the challenges seem insurmountable, hope for Tami arrives from a surprising place. And it's a higher hope than she's ever imagined.
