Subscribing to the “cult of true womanhood,” which valued domesticity, piety, and similar “feminine” virtues, women championed expansion for the cause of civilization, even while largely avoiding the masculine world of politics. Adrienne Caughfield mines the diaries and letters of some ninety Texas women to uncover the ideas and enthusiasms they brought to the Western frontier. Although there were a few notable exceptions, most of them drew on their domestic skills and values to establish not only “civilization,” but their own security. Caughfield sheds light on women’s activism (the flip side of domesticity), attitudes toward race and “civilization,” the tie between a vision of a unified continent and a cultivated wilderness, and republican values. She offers a new understanding of not only gender roles in the West but also the impulse for expansionism itself. The Bible says that "all have sinned and come short of the glory of God," and that "the wages of sin is death" (Romans 3:23; 6:23). But "He (God) hath made Him (Christ), who knew no sin, to be sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him" (2 Corinthians 5:21). Jesus Christ, God the Son, died on the cross, and rose from the dead on the third day. God gives all those who know Jesus Christ as Savior the right to call God, Father (Romans 8:15). Christ has promised that He will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). He does not promise an easy life, but He gives us the privilege of taking "everything to God in prayer" and knowing that He hears, and will answer us (1 John 5:15). Through His Spirit He offers inner peace and strength. All that God requires is that you and I turn from our sins (repent) and receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. "If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus Christ, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved" (Romans 10:9). To believe in Christ means you acknowledge that there is nothing you can do to be "good enough" to meet God's holy standard. Christ alone made the perfect sacrifice to put away your sin. Have you received Jesus Christ as your Savior? If not, you can right now. Tell God that you are sorry for your sins. Thank Him for sending His Son to die for you, and invite Him into your life.

Previous histories have rarely recognized that the battle for independence was also a woman's war. The "women of the army" toiled in army hospitals, kitchens, and laundries. Civilian women were spies, fund raisers, innkeepers, suppliers of food and clothing. Recruiters, whether patriot or tory, found men more willing to join the army when their wives and daughters could be counted on to keep the farms in operation and to resist enchroachment from squatters. "I have Don as much to Carrey on the warr as maney that Sett Now at the healm of government," wrote one impoverished woman, and she was right. Women of the Republic is the result of a seven-year search for women's diaries, letters, and legal records. Achieving a remarkable comprehensiveness, it describes women's participation in the war, evaluates changes in their education in the late eighteenth century, describes the novels and histories women read and wrote, and analyzes their status in law and society. The rhetoric of the Revolution, full of insistence on rights and freedom in opposition to dictatorial masters, posed questions about the position of women in marriage as well as in the polity, but few of the implications of this rhetoric were recognized. How much liberty and equality for women? How much pursuit of happiness? How much justice? When American political theory failed to define a program for the participation of women in the public arena, women themselves had to develop an ideology of female patriotism. They promoted the notion that women could guarantee the continuing health of the republic by nurturing public-spirited sons and husbands. This limited ideology of "Republican Motherhood" is a measure of the political and social conservatism of the Revolution. The subsequent history of women in America is the story of women's efforts to accomplish for themselves what the Revolution did not.
