Book excerpt: In the book, Life of Prayer, A.B. Simpson takes us on an intimate journey into the secret world of access to God through prayer. A.B. Simpson had a vigilant prayer life that no doubt paved the way for his fame as a worship leader and a recognized evangelical of the day. A.B. Simpson had the most effective prayer alliances of his day which led to the establishment of the Prayer Alliance and the Christian and Missionary Alliance church. A. B. Simpson leads us into the Holy of Holies and into the secret places of the Most High. It is the very life of the Christian and it touches the life of God himself. Jonathan Goforth called him the "man whose prayers have reached God. Down through the centuries few men have had greater prayer results." This testament is verified in the fact that he was able to accomplish so much through so little during such troubled times. This book desires to show us God's outpouring of communities, churches, and lives, we can begin by following the example Simpson set forth. Biography of A.B. Simpson: Born in 1843. A. B. Simpson was a major figure in American evangelicalism at the close of the 19th century, he founded the Christian and Missionary Alliance, established a publishing house, edited a weekly magazine, wrote over a hundred books, eighty volumes of sermons and literature, pastored multiple churches, launched social programs and ministries, founded a college and penned dozens of hymns and gospel songs. A.B. Simpson died in 1919 leaving a legacy that has extended around the world leaving ministries that touched millions of lives.

Book excerpt: Every Christian claims to pray. Every pastor tells the congregation that prayer meetings are the 'hub' of local church life. It is the view of the author, after decades as a Christian and pastor, that few Christians understand what prayer is and even fewer do not realise that prayer meetings as we have them today have no sure basis in biblical reality. Indeed, it is the author's researched view that traditional prayer meetings are invalid. We must all test the spirits... the book challenges Christians to do just this by setting church traditions aside and seeing what God really says. Are you truly a faithful believer, or not?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A CLASSIC COLLECTION ON PRAYER is a compilation of three of the finest titles on prayer ever published. It intends to familiarize Christians with the source of power available to them through prayer. THE KNEELING CHRISTIAN is a classic book on prayer that answers the most basic questions Christians have about prayer: “How shall I pray?”, “What is prayer?” and “Does God always answer prayer?” In A SHORT METHOD OF PRAYER, Madame Guyon teaches this simple truth: Pray from your heart and not your head. She also shares the great difference between praying to God and experiencing God through prayer. HOW TO PRAY by R. A. Torrey covers a number of prayer topics such as prayer and obedience, praying in the Spirit, praying according to God’s will, prayer with thanksgiving, when to pray, prayer and revival, and much more! These powerful titles have stood the test of time, all the while pointing the way toward communion with God as well as the life-changing benefits that spring from it.

Book excerpt: Many 21st Century Christians have excused themselves from the Biblical mandate to engage in effectual prayer and meditation. God is unlimited, yet He chooses to demonstrate His power through prayer. "Prayer Force" is a call to the believer for greater intimacy and communion with God. Prayer is not a magic wand. Perhaps the chief reason believers do not pray consistently is because they do not see their prayers answered. Without God's prerequisites, prayer remains unanswered. Misconceptions regarding prayer must be dispelled with the foundational Biblical descriptions. Priorities dictate schedules and schedules reveal priorities. If prayer is not a priority in action, it is not a priority at all. A look at God's view from Scripture and men's view from life, combine to make this book a dynamic propeller to fight the good fight on our knees. Pastor Kenneth J. Spink grew up in western New York, the 7th of 12 children. He is a graduate of Baptist Bible College and Baptist Bible Seminary of Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania. He and his wife, Debbie, have four children. He has served as Senior Pastor of the Berea Baptist Church in Berea, OH since 1984, on the Ohio Association of Regular Baptist Churches Council of 12 and the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches Council of 18. He has also served on the Baptist Mid-Mission General Council since 1988, where he presently fills the role of Chairman. In addition to his ministry as pastor, he has had numerous opportunities to develop and teach college level Bible courses. Pastor Spink has preached and encouraged believers in Hong Kong, Japan, Jamaica, Brazil, Chile, as well as Alaska and several other States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Psalms are the best known and most widely used prayer texts of the Bible. But the prayers of the Israelite took another form: the prose prayers that we find embedded in biblical narrative. Prose prayer was spoken by persons of all ranks. Male and female, Israelite and foreigner, all enjoyed equal access to God. The pervasiveness and spontaneity of this prayer, independent as it was of the structure and taboos of formal worship, turned it into a criterion for sincerity both in relations with God and in those among human beings. Greenberg finds in this rich life of private prayer a setting for the high religious ideas--and the scathing critique of worship--that characterized the "genius" of the prophets of the eighth and ninth centuries B.C. His compact and masterful study, originally the 1981-1982 Taubman Lectures at Berkeley, suggests an explanation for the unprecedented democratization of worship in post-biblical Judaism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "But kneel down in your little room and pray to God with real humility and earnestness, that he through his dear Son may give you his Holy Spirit, who will enlighten you, lead you, and give you understanding." --Martin Luther Quite often, theology and spirituality are separated, pursued without reference to the other--a classic example of the disjunction between head and heart. But in Luther we find a profound theologian exhibiting a profound spirituality, one that still speaks to us today. Luther sets out three rules for doing proper theology: oratio, meditatio, tentatio--or prayer, meditation, and spiritual trial. These three rules, derived from David the psalmist, provide a way for readers to investigate more thoroughly what Luther says about the important practice of theology or life in the Spirit. But they also serve as a simple way for Christians to live a fuller spiritual life. The intention of this book is to help readers enter into the world of Luther--the Augustinian monk and Reformer who prays, meditates, and suffers spiritual trial within the community of faith that extends over the centuries. Ever the teacher and pastor himself, Gordon Isaac invites readers into the reality of living a "theology of the cross," which helps make sense of our present struggles in this world and shows us how we can live in the love of God as revealed through Jesus Christ.
