Book excerpt: Ranging from the clay roads of Central Florida to the American Desert Southwest, the stories of True Kin foreground a cast of recurring characters engaged in battles both public and private, epic and mundane. The lead-off story, "Independence Day, 1983," winner of an AWP Intro Award, introduces a lakeside family barbeque, where class tensions and long-held grudges threaten to burst forth with dangerous consequences. In "Making Weight," a jumbo-sized high school wrestler struggles against his unpredictable body to lose six very important pounds. In "Release Statement," a troubled young woman attempts to make sense of her longtime obsession with Bob Barker of The Price Is Right fame. An unsuspecting adjunct professor, in "Hurricane Party, 2002," finds himself thrust suddenly into a violent confrontation with his former student. Rendered in meticulously crafted prose, these nine stories and one novella are grounded soundly in the dramatic moment, while probing deeply into the larger mysteries of the human condition. Seekers all, Jahna's characters brave the often absurd trials of contemporary life in an ongoing search for community, meaning, and love.

Evolutionary psychology is currently advancing our understanding of altruism, moral behavior, family violence, sexual aggression, warfare, aesthetics, the nature of language, and gender differences in mate choice and perception. It is helping us understand the relationship between cognitive science, developmental psychology, behavior genetics, personality, and social psychology. Foundations of Evolutionary Psychology provides an up-to-date review of the ideas, issues, and applications of contemporary evolutionary psychology. It is suitable for senior undergraduates, first-year graduate students, or professionals who wish to become conversant with the major issues currently shaping the emergence of this dynamic new field. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With rigorous original scholarship and creative narration, Lisa Brooks recovers a complex picture of war, captivity, and Native resistance during the "First Indian War" (later named King Philip's War) by relaying the stories of Weetamoo, a female Wampanoag leader, and James Printer, a Nipmuc scholar, whose stories converge in the captivity of Mary Rowlandson. Through both a narrow focus on Weetamoo, Printer, and their network of relations, and a far broader scope that includes vast Indigenous geographies, Brooks leads us to a new understanding of the history of colonial New England and of American origins. In reading seventeenth-century sources alongside an analysis of the landscape and interpretations informed by tribal history, Brooks's pathbreaking scholarship is grounded not just in extensive archival research but also in the land and communities of Native New England."--Jacket flap.

Book excerpt: In the Bronze Age a small forest kingdom is thrown into turmoil when their king dies without an heir. Villagers flee to the forest to escape the fighting for the crown, which must surely follow. Soldiers rise up and attempt to put an impostor on the throne. The Wolf Kin he is named, for he was raised by wolves after his family abandoned him when he was just two years old. Sneered at by most, tolerated by few, he is all that stands between the villagers and a bleak future. With the help of the forest, the Wolf Kin sends the army into exile. But none foresaw how far the soldiers would fall from grace; their exile starts a chain of events that few will survive unscathed. (I have very vivid dreams, when I awake, I write down the bones of the dreams to fill them out later, all characters descriptions and names are as I remember them. Some who have read this book say they loved it but didn't understand the whirlwind romance, others say they loved the romance but didn't like the gore, I'm afraid no one will like this book in it's entirety, but it is my dream I share with you, I hope you will at least love some of it.)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nation-state is here to stay. Thirty years ago it was fashionable to predict its imminent demise, but the sudden break-up of the Soviet Union in the 1990s unshackled long-repressed nationalisms and generated a host of new states. The closer integration of the European Union has given intra-national nationalisms a new lease of life, confirming the viability of small nation-states under a supra-national umbrella - after all, if Ireland and Iceland, then why not Scotland and Catalonia? And then the world stage has seen new and powerful national players moving from the wings to the centre: China, India, and Brazil are full of a sense of growing into their own national destinies and are in no mood either to dissolve into, or to defer to, some larger body.Nations, nationalisms, and nation-states are persistent facts, but what should we think of them morally? Surely humanity, not a nation, should claim our loyalty? How can it be right to exclude foreigners by policing borders? Can a liberal nation-state thrive without a cohering public orthodoxy? Does national sovereignty confer immunity? Is national separatism always justified? These are urgent questions. Between Kin and Cosmopolis offers timely Christian answers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Granville Sharp s Canon and Its Kin explains that the semantics of the article-substantive-KAI-substantive construction (TSKS) have been largely misunderstood and that this misunderstanding has adversely impacted the exegesis of several theologically significant texts. This issue is addressed from three angles: historical investigation, linguistic-phenomenological analysis of the construction, and exegetical implications. The reasons for the misunderstanding are traced historically; a better comprehension of the semantics of the construction is established by an examination of primary literature in the light of linguistic theory; and the implications of this analysis are applied to a number of passages in the New Testament. Historically, the treatment begins with a clear grammatical principle articulated by Granville Sharp, and it ends with the present-day confusion. This book includes a detailed examination of the New Testament data and other Ancient Greek literature, which reveals that Sharp s rule has a general validity in the language. Lastly, a number of exegetically significant texts that are affected by the linguistic-phenomenological investigation are discussed in detail. This enlightening text is a valuable resource for undergraduate and graduate students of religion, linguistics, history, and Greek."
