Book excerpt: Preachers' kids are the worst!' This is an allegation we've heard all our lives. It was usually one of those heathen deacon's children hurling the accusation our way after we'd escaped blame for a problem we'd caused. Like livestock, PKs are branded for life. People know at first glance that we are trouble. Father, Forgive Me: Confessions of a Southern Baptist Preacher's Kid is a humorous, self-deprecating memoir of a preacher's kid (PK) growing up in the South. Do you want to know what really goes on behind the closed doors of a parsonage? Do you ever wonder how preachers nickname their parishioners and talk in secret code about the members of their flocks? Have you ever wondered how preachers' wives help keep the family on an even keel? For all who have ever wanted to be a fly on the wall in a minister's home, this is the book that will expose it all-including what happens when a minister's wife shoots one of her own children!

Book Synopsis A Modern Exposition of the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith by : Samuel E. Waldron
Download or read book A Modern Exposition of the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith written by Samuel E. Waldron and published by EP BOOKS. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A modern exposition of the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith. In this extensive exposition of the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith, Sam Waldron shows that this work is a masterly statement of the historic Christian faith. His direct and lucid style will help ministers, students and laymen alike to a clear understanding of the Confession and to see its relevance and application to our modern age. Modern Christianity is awash in a flood of doctrinal relativity. Satan and his forces love the imprecision and ambiguity which are rampant in our day. As C. H. Spurgeon observed, 'The arch-enemy of truth has invited us to level our walls and take away our fenced cities'. This exposition was originally published in 1989 to mark the 300th anniversary of the publication of the Second London Confession, which also became known as the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith. Today, reformed Baptists world-wide hold this Confession in high esteem and many churches continue to regard it as their official statement of faith. Included in this publication is a helpful introduction on the legitimacy and use of confessions by Dr R. P. Martin, currently Pastor of Emmanuel Reformed Baptist Church in Seattle, Washington.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I gave my life to the Lord, I used to get angry with myself all the time and I felt hopeless. I kept falling into sin and making dumb decisions that kept me from being successful. How could I be so smart and still be so stupid that I can't beat this thing? Self-pity began to gain strength. I got depressed, at one point I was homeless, and I gave up on myself. I walked away from God many times. One day my mother prayed with me and gave me a Bible and told me to read Romans. I later became a Minister. I couldn't get it right because I couldn't get past my addiction and my own self-interests. How could this be? I am a Minister. Who does the man of God go to when he is failing? The answer is clearly God. I became convinced that my testimony may help some other Ministers who struggle with the same things I did. Like me, they may be waiting on God and hoping He hears them, too! One day I accepted that even Preachers can fail. I wasn't doing anything constructive with my life at that time. I decided to trust God. I didn't know if He would do it, but I prayed anyway. I soon believed that if I asked God for faith, and told people the truth, God was going to change me. Today, I am a Minister in good standing in a church in Orange County, CA and the CEO of a nonprofit called A Touch of Love Works. When you read A Preacher's Confession, you discover that in spite of everything that is wrong with me, there is a side of me that wants to make the world a better place and I will do my part. This is my story. To God be the glory.

Book Synopsis Becoming a Man of Unwavering Faith by : Joel Osteen
Download or read book Becoming a Man of Unwavering Faith written by Joel Osteen and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2011-08-10 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the course of his 60-year ministry, John Osteen combined an extraordinary love for people with a vision for ministry best described in his own words: "No limits." In this hardcover volume not only includes content from John's sermon transcripts, but also a foreword and commentary written by his son, Joel; the principles of this "no limits" faith come alive again for a new generation. For the moments of struggle and temptation that every man faces, and the times in life when he feels surrounded and under attack, John's message is profoundly simple-those moments are precisely the time for an unwavering faith. In this book, John schools today's believers in seven qualities of unwavering faith: 1. It hears and sees what the world cannot see or hear. 2. It prays earnestly even though it has already heard the answer. 3. It is strong when there is no evidence of the answer. 4. It always says, "Go Again!" 5. It goes on when there's just a little evidence. 6. It believes for the big when it sees the little. 7. It begins with nothing but ends up doing mighty things for God. Osteen also provides principles for those times when faith doesn't seem to be working. Becoming a Man of Understanding Faith is a guidebook to stronger faith, from a man who spent a lifetime testing its limits.

Book Synopsis True Confessions by : Francis X. Maier
Download or read book True Confessions written by Francis X. Maier and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2024-03-10 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade Rome has been marked with sharp, and often unwarranted, criticism of the Church in the United States and American Catholic life. But very few of the critics have taken the time to talk, systematically, with a wide range of U.S. Catholics to understand their concerns. True Confessions is unique for its frank and in-depth interviews with 103 bishops, clergy, religious, and lay men and women from various backgrounds over a 17-month period, December 2020 through May 2022. The wide-ranging subject matter includes the unseen challenges of life as a bishop; the pressures and satisfactions of the priesthood, the diaconate, and the consecrated life; the structural and leadership ingredients of diocesan success and failure; fallout from the Church' sex-abuse scandals; problems in Catholic universities; attitudes toward the Vatican; the role of Catholics in the academy and the secular culture; the witness of parents who have children with special needs; and the testimony of immigrant Americans as they assess their new homeland. Finally, the book presents the reasons why so many U.S. Catholics, despite today's challenges, continue to love the Church and cherish their faith with joy and energy.
Book Synopsis Confessions of a Reformission Rev. by : Mark Driscoll
Download or read book Confessions of a Reformission Rev. written by Mark Driscoll and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-05-26 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the birth and growth of Seattle’s innovative Mars Hill Church, one of America’s fastest growing churches located in one of America’s toughest mission fields. It’s also the story of the growth of a pastor, the mistakes he’s made along the way, and God’s grace and work in spite of those mistakes. Mark Driscoll’s emerging, missional church took a rocky road from its start in a hot, upstairs youth room with gold shag carpet to its current weekly attendance of thousands. With engaging humor, humility, and candor, Driscoll shares the failures, frustrations, and just plain messiness of trying to build a church that is faithful to the gospel of Christ in a highly post-Christian culture. In the telling, he’s not afraid to skewer some sacred cows of traditional, contemporary, and emerging churches. Each chapter discusses not only the hard lessons learned but also the principles and practices that worked and that can inform your church’s ministry, no matter its present size. The book includes discussion questions and appendix resources. “After reading a book like this, you can never go back to being an inwardly focused church without a mission. Even if you disagree with Mark about some of the things he says, you cannot help but be convicted to the inner core about what it means to have a heart for those who don’t know Jesus.”—Dan Kimball, author,The Emerging Church “... will make you laugh, cry, and get mad ... school you, shape you, and mold you into the right kind of priorities to lead the church in today’s messy world.”—Robert Webber, Northern Seminary
