This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are approximately 4,000 fatalities in crashes involving trucks and buses in the United States each year. Though estimates are wide-ranging, possibly 10 to 20 percent of these crashes might have involved fatigued drivers. The stresses associated with their particular jobs (irregular schedules, etc.) and the lifestyle that many truck and bus drivers lead, puts them at substantial risk for insufficient sleep and for developing short- and long-term health problems. Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Fatigue, Long-Term Health and Highway Safety assesses the state of knowledge about the relationship of such factors as hours of driving, hours on duty, and periods of rest to the fatigue experienced by truck and bus drivers while driving and the implications for the safe operation of their vehicles. This report evaluates the relationship of these factors to drivers' health over the longer term, and identifies improvements in data and research methods that can lead to better understanding in both areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of the role of the law enforcement officer (LEO) in the investigation of commercial motor vehicle crashes cannot be overstated, yet few LEOs have any significant specialized training in the unique standards of care that apply to operators of commercial motor vehicles. As a result, LEOs often mistakenly apply the standards applicable to drivers of cars when analyzing the conduct of a commercial driver involved in a commercial motor vehicle crash. This book is designed to address the gap in training and knowledge about the standards applicable to operators of commercial motor vehicles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to a request from the Director of the Virginia Department of Transportation Safety an evaluation of the state and federal regulations, inspection programs and enforcement activities regarding truck safety was carried out. The purpose of the study was to assess the nature and scope of current regulatory activities; to compare and contrast state and federal approaches; and to ascertain whether or not a problem exists with state regulations, inspections, and enforcement and, if so, to suggest remedial measures. The study was carried out with guidance provided by a project advisory group consisting of representatives of the Department of Highways and Transportation, Division of Motor Vehicles, Department of State Police, Department of Health, Office of Energy and Emergency Services, State Corporation Commission, Port Authority, Division of Legislative Services, Office of the Attorney General, U. S. Bureau of Motor Carrier Safety, National Transportation Safety Board, and the Virginia Highway Users Association. The evaluation included a review of relevant literature, a questionnaire survey of other states, site visits and observations of SCC and BMCS on-road safety inspections, a review and comparison of state and federal laws and regulations, and an analysis of available data concerning truck accidents. Analysis of the information obtained led to the. Conclusion that some revisions to the regulatory provisions governing the trucking industry and the transportation of hazardous materials are warranted. Recommendations for the revision of Virginia's regulations and administrative programs are offered.

Book Synopsis Technologies and Approaches to Reducing the Fuel Consumption of Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicles by : National Research Council
Download or read book Technologies and Approaches to Reducing the Fuel Consumption of Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicles written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-07-30 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technologies and Approaches to Reducing the Fuel Consumption of Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicles evaluates various technologies and methods that could improve the fuel economy of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, such as tractor-trailers, transit buses, and work trucks. The book also recommends approaches that federal agencies could use to regulate these vehicles' fuel consumption. Currently there are no fuel consumption standards for such vehicles, which account for about 26 percent of the transportation fuel used in the U.S. The miles-per-gallon measure used to regulate the fuel economy of passenger cars. is not appropriate for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, which are designed above all to carry loads efficiently. Instead, any regulation of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles should use a metric that reflects the efficiency with which a vehicle moves goods or passengers, such as gallons per ton-mile, a unit that reflects the amount of fuel a vehicle would use to carry a ton of goods one mile. This is called load-specific fuel consumption (LSFC). The book estimates the improvements that various technologies could achieve over the next decade in seven vehicle types. For example, using advanced diesel engines in tractor-trailers could lower their fuel consumption by up to 20 percent by 2020, and improved aerodynamics could yield an 11 percent reduction. Hybrid powertrains could lower the fuel consumption of vehicles that stop frequently, such as garbage trucks and transit buses, by as much 35 percent in the same time frame.

Book excerpt: Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards - Rear Visibility (US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Regulation) (NHTSA) (2018 Edition) The Law Library presents the complete text of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards - Rear Visibility (US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Regulation) (NHTSA) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 To reduce the risk of devastating backover crashes involving vulnerable populations (including very young children) and to satisfy the mandate of the Cameron Gulbransen Kids Transportation Safety Act of 2007, NHTSA is issuing this final rule to expand the required field of view for all passenger cars, trucks, multipurpose passenger vehicles, buses, and low-speed vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of less than 10,000 pounds. The agency anticipates that today's final rule will significantly reduce backover crashes involving children, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and other pedestrians who currently have the highest risk associated with backover crashes. Specifically, today's final rule specifies an area behind the vehicle which must be visible to the driver when the vehicle is placed into reverse and other related performance requirements. The agency anticipates that, in the near term, vehicle manufacturers will use rearview video systems and in-vehicle visual displays to meet the requirements of this final rule.
