Book excerpt: All that holds back the Galaxy’s first interplanetary war is a crew of repurposed criminals, an undercover agent, and a world-government trust fund baby. The Dogs of War. With the destruction of the planet Mukurus comes the dawn of new struggles for the Worlds Crisis Committee. The Dragons are awakened. Their Higher Order sits council at a hidden base somewhere in the Milky Way, along with faithful servants called Faders, who worship them as gods. From the shadows, they puppeteer raids to cut SkyLine supply routes. They box in human expansion, stifle the enemy. After its defeat at the hands of Drogan, the ancient life form Machaeus is scattered across the cosmos. Its spores are the subject of research on both sides of the budding Dragon war. It becomes a means of transport. It becomes a weapon. The study of these “M-Particles” inspires horrendous biological experimentation in deep cover labs across the Galaxy. Beneath it all, the will of Machaeus lurks still, forming a plot of its own. In the chaos, the Worlds Crisis Committee turns to the Dogs of War. This elite task force tackles two missions to keep the Milky Way from tearing itself apart. Open new trade routes. Find the Dragons and uproot them from the galaxy. The mission sounds simple to the Dogs’ Captain, Demitri “Demi” Alexander, until he sees the crew in action. He alone can reconcile the differences between siblings from the mines of Saturn’s Rings, the niece of a high-ranking WCC executive, and an M-Particle research specialist. They must become the Dogs of War. They are the last chance for humans to make a stand against the enclosing Dragon threat. Demi’s biggest challenge, though, are his feelings for one of his own. Arms Specialist Kalus Delphi. The two have a history of passion, one they put behind them for the good of the unit. The Captain faces a dangerous balance of reigning in the wily but talented Kalus, without igniting flames best snuffed. But, with the fate of the Galaxy on their shoulders, how much can these two fight their own feelings? For better or worse, the Dogs of War cross every planet in the SkyLine. They delve deep in the Chrysum wells of Neptune and the floating city of Jupiter alike, in search of the Dragons and hope to defeat them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The apocalyptic, pastoral, and urban traditions have fundamentally shaped Western history and influenced American religion, culture, and politics. This book argues that these traditions have not only been decisive in giving form and substance to classic and modern American literature, but have been appropriated by contemporary science fiction. As a loosely connected set of cultural narratives, the Cross, the Plow, and the Skyline have through the medium of science fiction and fantasy provided a bold vista on the future grounded in an emergent ecological imagination. In the expanded second edition of the original 2001 publication, the author argues that a significant shift has taken place in contemporary Anglo-American science fiction and fantasy (SF/F) from twentieth-century SF/F critically analyzed in the first edition’s critical inquiry. Avantgarde works in twenty-first century speculative fiction--extensively examined in representative works in interludes separating the slightly revised original chapters--have become: darker in their visions of the possible future; more focused on slowness over breakneck speed; more amenable to gender, racial, and global diversity in authorship, plot, and subgenre creation; less attached to anchor concepts like the city, wilderness, and the domesticated landscape in plot development; more prone to dystopian and critical dystopian tropes; simultaneously more open toward, but critical of, Young Adult fiction; and more supportive of the breakdown of borders and antagonisms between science fiction and fantasy and SF/F and literary fiction. Ensconced in the cultural, social, and political zeitgeist of the New Millennium’s first two decades, these features of twenty-first century science fiction and fantasy may yet settle into and inform emergent and pluralistic varieties of ecological politics spreading across the globe and confronting the Earth’s social and environmental crises of our times and coming decades.

Meg Cannistra’s writing shines as bright as any shooting star.” —Cassie Beasley, author of Circus Mirandus “Loving, imaginative, and gorgeously written, this book shines with magic and heart.” —Anne Ursu, author of The Lost Girl Wonder meets Mary Poppins in this heartfelt debut novel about magic, healing, and the importance of family. Twelve-year-old Luna loves the nighttime more than anything else. It’s when no one gives her “that look” about the half mask she has to wear while healing from a disfiguring car accident. It’s also the perfect time to sit outside and draw what she sees. Like the boy and girl from the new family next door…zipping out of the window in a zeppelin and up to the stars. At first she thinks she’s dreaming. But one night they catch her watching. Now Luna spends her nights on adventures with them, as they clean full moons, arrange constellations, and catch jars of stardust. She even gets to make a wish on a shooting star they catch. But Luna learns that no wish is strong enough to erase the past—as much as she may hope to.

Book excerpt: While revival may be for a season, the Kingdom of God is “unshakeable and never-ending.” The Supernatural Skyline unpacks revival, then proposes God’s greater plan of continuing Kingdom encounters. Full of supernatural experiences and practical expressions of Christ living in and working through His people today, The Supernatural Skyline will expand your vision of the Kingdom to include exciting new spiritual possibilities. Written for thinking Christians who want church life to be meaningful, relevant, and culturally engaging, The Supernatural Skyline contends that the church needs to accept the “keys to the Kingdom” and use those keys to unlock doors currently closed to Christ and His purpose. Defining the Kingdom of God as Jesus’ life enacted in every sphere—justice, government, economics, education, art—any realm that influences people and their culture—this book will challenge you to consider fresh concepts and biblically sound principles.

Book excerpt: Skyline is home. Skyline is family. Home is where the heart is. Aurelie Bay and her family are loyal to Skyline and the corporation that has saved humanity from the apocalypse threatening their extinction. With the surface of the planet destroyed by an ancient disaster and only their city between the human race and annihilation, she trusts in her parents, her guard brother and the very foundation of the city her people have been building for over a hundred years. She has been taught that their salvation lies upward, and that Skyline's management has the health, welfare and survival of all of their citizens at heart. But when her best friend's troubles lure Aure down a path of rebellion and selfishness in an effort to save him from himself, she learns to question the truth behind the city in the sky. Pitted against her leaders, her family and the very tenets she's grown up believing, Aure is forced to face the fact that those in control of Skyline and the continuation of the human race may not be telling the people everything and that they're far closer to catastrophe than anyone is willing to admit.
