This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 685 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-awaited second edition of this classic textbook expands on the first edition to include advances made in the last four decades, bringing the topic completely up to date. The book addresses critical issues such as whether humanity can feed itself, and whether it can do so in environmentally sound and sustainable ways. Written from agronomic, environmental, and ecological standpoints, the textbook employs a multidisciplinary approach, including policymaking and plant genetic improvements, as well as ecosystem services, climate change, biodiversity, sustainability and resilience. New chapters in this second edition focus on organic carbon in soil, soil biology, soils in relation to livestock production and forestry, and agroforestry. The new edition will again be the go-to textbook for courses on tropical soils, and a reference textbook for soil and agricultural scientists and development professionals working in the tropics.

Download or read book Advances in Soil Science written by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of soils has taken on increased importance because a rapidly expanding population is placing demands on the soil never before experi enced. This has led to an increase in land degradation. Land degradation is one of the most severe problems facing mankind. Volume 11 of Advances in Soil Science was devoted entirely to this critical area of soil science. The editors of that volume, R. Lal and B.A. Stewart, defined soil degradation as the decline in soil quality caused by its misuse by humans. They further stated that soil degradation is a major concern for at least two reasons. First, it undermines the productive capacity of an ecosystem. Second, it affects global climate through alterations in water and energy balances and disruptions in cycles of carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, and other elements. Through its impact on agricultural productivity and environment, soil deg radation leads to political and social instability, enhanced rate of deforesta tion, intensive use of marginal and fragile lands, accelerated runoff and soil erosion, pollution of natural waters, and emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. In fact, soil degradation affects the very fabric of mankind.

Book Synopsis Long-term Experiments in Agricultural and Ecological Sciences by : Rothamsted Experimental Station
Download or read book Long-term Experiments in Agricultural and Ecological Sciences written by Rothamsted Experimental Station and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1994 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates that long-term experimentation and monitoring are vitally important in understanding changes that are occurring in the environment and the way they interact with agriculture and natural ecosystems. Chapters are based on papers presented at a conference held in July 1993, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Rothamsted Experimental Station. During these 150 years of agricultural research a unique set of field experiments have run continuously for all or most of that time. These experiments, originally set up to study the nutrient requirements of arable crops, now provide a unique resource that is relevant to sustainability, environmental impact and climatic change. The book consists of 22 chapters and covers a wide range of topics including descriptions of various long-term experiments in the USA, Australia, Eastern Europe and Africa, as well as studies at Rothamsted. It will interest a very wide range of readers in agronomy, soil science, forestry, ecology and environmental science.
