Book excerpt: During deuterim-only neutral-beam-injected discharges, tritium from earlier deuterium-tritium discharges is released from the vessel limiters and walls to cause a deuterium-tritium neutron count rate comparable to the deuterium-deuterium neutron count rate. A measure of the tritium density in the plasma based on neutron rate measurements is defined and used to determine which parameters influence tritium influx to the plasma core. The tritium density is observed to decrease in a sequence of deuterium-only supershots and to depend on the amount of tritium injected in prior DT shots and the amount of tritium present in the limiter. A weak correlation is also observed with the plasma current, but not with beam power, hydrogen influx, carbon influx, visible bremsstrahlung, lithium pellet injection, blooms, nor disruptions.

Book excerpt: TFTR has begun its campaign to study deuterium-tritium fusion under reactor-like conditions. Variable amounts of deuterium and tritium neutral beam power have been used to maximize fusion power, study alpha heating, investigate alpha particle confinement, and search for alpha driven plasma instabilities. Additional areas of study include energy and particle transport and confinement, ICRF heating schemes for DT plasmas, tritium retention, and fusion in high [beta]{sub p} plasmas. The majority of this work is done in the TFTR supershot confinement regime. To obtain supershots, extensive limiter conditioning using helium fueled ohmic discharges and lithium pellet injection into ohmic and neutral beam heated plasmas is performed, resulting in a low recycling limiter. The relationship between recycling and core plasma confinement has been studied by using helium, deuterium and high-Z gas puffs to simulate high recycling limiter conditions. These studies show that confinement in TFTR supershots is very sensitive to the influx of neutral particles at the plasma edge.

Book excerpt: The first spectroscopic measurements of tritium Balmer-alpha (T[sub [alpha]]) emission from a fusion plasma were made on TFTR using a Fabry-Perot interferometer. The T[sub [alpha]] emission line is partially blended with the D[sub [alpha]] line (deuterium-alpha), commonly used in edge plasma diagnostics, and the contributions of H[sub [alpha]], D[sub [alpha]], and T[sub [alpha]], are separated by spectral analysis. The data are a measure of the fueling of the plasma by tritium accumulated in the TFTR limiter, as well as the amount of neutral tritium generated by charge exchange of plasma ions. The T[alpha] line first became detectable in a high power, tritium only, neutral beam injection discharge at the level of T[sub [alpha]]/(H[sub [alpha]]+D[sub [alpha]]+T[sub [alpha]]) = 2%. Subsequently this ratio has increased to as high as 7.5%. Data on the time evolution of the T[sub [alpha]] emission during a single discharge and over a series of tritium and deuterium discharges are presented.

Book excerpt: The neutrals code DEGAS and the transport code SNAP were used to model recycling during steady state phases of Ohmic and neutral beam-heated discharges in TFTR. The flux of deuterium from the inner limiter is calculated to be 15--45 times the total D{sub {alpha}} emission rate, with (almost equal to)2/3 of the deuterium flux resulting from D flow in the scrape off to the limiter, and (almost equal to)1/3 resulting from D° scattering off the limiter. The total D ionization rate in the core plasma is 6--24 times the total D{sub {alpha}} emission rate, and is larger than the total neutral beam fueling rate. The D{sub {alpha}} emission rate, limiter flux, and core ionization rates scale approximately as the square of the volume averaged electron density. 12 refs., 7 figs.

Book excerpt: Tritium pellet injection into neutral deuterium, beam heated deuterium plasmas in the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) is shown to be an attractive means of (1) minimizing tritium use per tritium discharge and over a sequence of tritium discharges; (2) greatly reducing the tritium load in the walls, limiters, getters, and cryopanels; (3) maintaining or improving instantaneous neutron production (Q); (4) reducing or eliminating deuterium-tritium (D-T) neutron production in non-optimized discharges; and (5) generally adding flexibility to the experimental sequences leading to optimal Q operation. Transport analyses of both compression and full-bore TFTR plasmas are used to support the above observations and to provide the basis for a proposed eight-pellet gas gun injector for the 1986 tritium experiments.

Book excerpt: Tritium retention in TFTR [Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor] and JET [Joint European Torus] shows striking similarities and contrasts. In TFTR, 5 g of tritium were injected into circular plasmas over a 3.5 year period, mostly by neutral-beam injection. In JET, 35 g were injected into divertor plasmas over a 6 month campaign, mostly by gas puffing. In TFTR, the bumper limiter provided a large source of eroded carbon and a major part of tritium was co-deposited on the limiter and vessel wall. Only a small area of the co-deposit flaked off. In JET, the wall is a net erosion area, and co-deposition occurs principally in shadowed parts of the inner divertor, with heavy flaking. In both machines, the initial tritium retention, after a change from deuterium [D] to tritium [T] gas puffing, is high and is due to isotope exchange with deuterium on plasma-facing surfaces (dynamic inventory). The contribution of co-deposition is lower but cumulative, and is revealed by including periods of D fueling that reversed the T/D isotope exchange. Ion beam analysis of flakes from TFTR showed an atomic D/C ratio of 0.13 on the plasma facing surface, 0.25 on the back surface and 0.11 in the bulk. Data from a JET divertor tile showed a larger D/C ratio with 46% C, 30% D, 20% H and 4% O. Deuterium, tritium, and beryllium profiles have been measured and show a thin less than 50 micron co-deposited layer. Flakes retrieved from the JET vacuum vessel exhibited a high tritium release rate of 2e10 Bq/month/g. BBQ modeling of the effect of lithium on retention in TFTR showed overlapping lithium and tritium implantation and a 1.3x increase in local T retention.

Book excerpt: Because magnetically confined plasmas are generally not found in a state of thermodynamic equilibrium, they have been studied extensively with methods of applied kinetic theory. In closed magnetic field line confinement devices such as the tokamak, non-Maxwellian distortions usually occur as a result of auxiliary heating and transport. In magnetic mirror configurations even the intended steady state plasma is far from local thermodynamic equilibrium because of losses along open magnetic field lines. In both of these major fusion devices, kinetic models based on the Boltzmann equation with Fokker-Planck collision terms have been successful in representing plasma behavior. The heating of plasmas by energetic neutral beams or microwaves, the production and thermalization of a-particles in thermonuclear reactor plasmas, the study of runaway electrons in tokamaks, and the performance of two-energy compo nent fusion reactors are some examples of processes in which the solution of kinetic equations is appropriate and, moreover, generally necessary for an understanding of the plasma dynamics. Ultimately, the problem is to solve a nonlinear partial differential equation for the distribution function of each charged plasma species in terms of six phase space variables and time. The dimensionality of the problem may be reduced through imposing certain symmetry conditions. For example, fewer spatial dimensions are needed if either the magnetic field is taken to be uniform or the magnetic field inhomogeneity enters principally through its variation along the direction of the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 195 tritium ion source shots were injected into TFTR high power plasmas during December 1993--March 1994. In addition, four highly diagnosed pulses were fired into the calorimeter. Analysis of the Doppler-shifted T[alpha] emission of the beam in the neutralizer has revealed that the extracted ion composition for deuterium and tritium are indistinguishable: 0.72[plus-minus]0.04 D[sup +], 0.22[plus-minus]0.02 D[sub 2][sup +], 0.07[plus-minus]0.01 D[sub 3][sup +] compared to 0.72[plus-minus]0.04 T[sup +], 0.23[plus-minus]0.02 T[sub 2][sup +], 0.05[plus-minus]0.01 T[sub 3][sup +]. The resultant tritium full-energy neutral fraction is higher than for deuterium due the increased neutralization efficiency at lower velocity. To conserve tritium, it was used only for injection and a few calorimeter test shots, never for ion source conditioning. When used, the gas species was switched to tritium only for the shot in question. This resulted in an approximately 2% deuterium contamination of the tritium beam and vice versa for the first deuterium pulse following tritium. Data from the calorimeter shots indicates that tritium contamination of the deuterium beam cleans up in 5--6 beam pulses, and is reduced to immeasurable quantities prior to deuterium beam injection.
