Book excerpt: Tristan da Cunha in the middle of the South Atlantic is the world's loneliest inhabited island. In the 1950s my family lived there for five years. My memoir is a snapshot of life in this unique community, experiencing their ratting days, big heaps, a royal visit and the devastation when two boats were lost. It was an extraordinary childhood, unlike any other.

Book excerpt: Tristan da Cunha, a British possession, is an island-mountain of volcanic origin in the South Atlantic ocean. Latitude 37° 5' 50" S.; longitude 12° 16' 40" W. Circular in form. Circumference about 21 miles. Diameter about 7 miles. Height 7,640 feet. Volcano extinct during historic times. Discovered by the Portuguese navigator Tristan da Cunha, 1506. Occupied by the British, 1816. Nearest inhabited land, the island of St. Helena, 1,200 miles to the N. In the autumn of 1904 we saw in the _Standard_ a letter which arrested our attention. It was an appeal for some one to go to the Island of Tristan da Cunha, as the people had had no clergyman for seventeen years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tristan da Cunha is both a remote group of volcanic islands in the south Atlantic Ocean and the main island of that group. It is the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world, lying approximately 1,511 miles (2,432 km) off the coast of Cape Town in South Africa, 1,343 miles (2,161 km) from Saint Helena and 2,166 miles (3,486 km) off the coast from the Falkland Islands. The territory consists of the main island, Tristan da Cunha, which has a diameter of roughly 11 km (6.8 mi) and an area of 98 sq km (38 sq mi), the smaller, uninhabited Nightingale Islands, and the wildlife reserves of Inaccessible Island and Gough Island. As of October 2018, the main island has 250 permanent inhabitants who all carry British Overseas Territories citizenship. The other islands are uninhabited, except for the personnel of a weather station on Gough Island. Tristan da Cunha is part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension, and Tristan da Cunha. This includes Saint Helena and also near-equatorial Ascension Island, which lies some 1,741 miles (2,802 km) to the north of Tristan. There is no airstrip of any kind on the main island, meaning that the only way of travelling in and out of Tristan is by boat, a six-day trip from South Africa. Angry Island: The Story of Tristan da Cunha (1506-1963) by Margaret Mackay was first published in 1963, the year the Tristanians returned to their island after its volcano erupted in 1961 and forced the evacuation of the entire population to England. As the most isolated inhabited island on Earth, the Tristanians have had to adapt and develop innovative ways in order to survive, and in this book, Mrs. Mackay tells a very detailed history of Tristan da Cunha since its discovery over five hundred years ago, sharing many shipwreck tales and early yet failed attempts to settle the island. A gripping read!

Tristan da Cunha is discovered in the 16th century by the Portuguese explorer Tristan da Cunha. Tristan da Cunha is annexed by the British, in 1816, as a British colony. The British had taken an interest in Tristan da Cunha as a base to prevent the French from liberating Napoleon who, from 1815 to 1821, was banned to Saint Helena also in the southern Atlantic Ocean. Initially, Tristan da Cunha is administered from Cape of Good Hope and made a dependency of Saint Helena in 1938. Saint Helena, itself, becomes a British dependency in 1981 and a British overseas territory in 2002. In 2009, the status of the dependencies of Saint Helena Ascension has become a dependency of Saint Helena in 1922 is made the same as that of Saint Helena itself, when the British overseas territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha is formed
