Through that date, 140 Americans had been killed in action, 1,138 had been wounded and 11 were listed as missing. On March 8, American combat troops (Battalion Landing Team 3, Ninth Marines of the 3d Marine Division) came ashore at 9:02 a.m. on Red Beach 2: by June 1, 1965, 50,000 troops were stationed in the country. The escalation had begun. This is a chronological listing of more than 600 Army and Marine combat operations from 1965 through 1973. Each entry includes the dates, name, location, type of action, units involved, events (individual activities within the area of operations), casualties, and resulting political or military activity. Information was derived in part from official documents. Interspersed chronologically are brief summaries of significant events that affected the conduct of the war, such as major developments, ceasefires, political observations, and troop strength.

Book excerpt: The 4th Infantry Division has always been there in AmericaÕs modern wars. On 14 September 1918 the men of the ÒIvyÓ Division stood up in their trenches and prepared to attack. It would be one of the first times that American troops would operate autonomously, aside from Anglo-Franco command. They would go over the top on uneven ground to be blown to pieces by German artillery and fall in their hundreds to the spitting of German machine guns, yet nevertheless win the day. In World War II on D-Day they scrambled ashore across the sands of Utah beach and remained fighting in Europe until Hitler was dead and Germany had surrendered. From the Normandy campaign to the hell of the Hrtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge, no other American division suffered more casualties in the European theater than the 4th, and no other division accomplished as much. In Vietnam they would execute precarious Òsearch and destroyÓ missions in dense jungles against a determined and resourceful enemy. They experienced a series of major engagements that would entail 33 consecutive days of vicious, close-quarters combat in the battle of Dak To in 1967. For their actions in Indochina they would receive no less than 11 Medals of Honor. They fought in Iraq to topple Saddam Hussein, and in May 2009, at the height of Operation Enduring Freedom, the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team deployed to Afghanistan for a 12-month combat mission. They operated in the birthplace of the Taliban along the Arghandab River Valley, west of Kandahar City, a place often ominously referred to as "The Heart of Darkness." The 2nd Battalion 12th Infantry Regiment saw heavy combat throughout. Through firsthand interviews with veterans, across the decades, and the expert analysis of the authors, the role of one of AmericaÕs mainstay divisions in its modern conflicts is in these pages illuminated.

Revisionist historians who reject this view have formulated many contra-factual scenarios for how the war might have been won, but also put forward one historically testable hypothesis—namely that the war actually was won after the 1968 Tet Offensive, only to be thrown away later through a failure of political will. It is this “Lost Victory” hypothesis that Kevin M. Boylan takes up in Losing Binh Dinh, aiming to determine once and for all whether the historical record supports such a claim. Proponents of the “Lost Victory” thesis contend that by 1972, President Richard Nixon's policy of “Vietnamization” had effectively eliminated South Vietnamese insurgents, “pacified” the countryside, and prepared the South Vietnamese to defend their own territory with only logistical and financial support from Americans. Rejecting the top-down approach favored by Revisionists, Boylan examines the facts on the ground in Binh Dinh, a strategically vital province that was the second most populous in South Vietnam, controlled key transportation routes, and contained one of the nation's few major seaports as well as the huge US Air Force base at Phu Cat.
