Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the religious ideology of a Tamil reformer and saint, Ramalinga Swamigal of the 19th century and his posthumous reception in the Tamil country and sheds light on the transformation of Tamil religion that both his works and the understanding of him brought about. The book traces the hagiographical and biographical process by which Ramalinga Swamigal is shifted from being considered an exemplary poet-saint of the Tamil Śaivite bhakti tradition to a Dravidian nationalist social reformer. Taking as a starting point Ramalinga’s own writing, the book presents him as inhabiting a border zone between early modernity and modernity, between Hinduism and Christianity, between colonialism and regional nationalism, highlighting the influence of his teachings on politics, particularly within Dravidian cultural and political nationalism. Simultaneously, the book considers the implication of such an hagiographical process for the transformation of Tamil religion in the period between the 19th –mid-20th centuries. The author demonstrates that Ramalinga Swamigal’s ideology of compassion, cīvakāruṇyam, had not only a long genealogy in pre-modern Tamil Śaivism but also that it functioned as a potentially emancipatory ethics of salvation and caste critique not just for him but also for other Tamil and Dalit intellectuals of the 19th century. This book is a path-breaking study that also traces the common grounds between the religious visions of two of the most prominent subaltern figures of Tamil modernity – Iyothee Thass and Ramalingar. It argues that these transformations are one meaningful way for a religious tradition to cope with and come to terms with the implications of historicization and the demands of colonial modernity. It is, therefore, a valuable contribution to the field of religion, South Asian history and literature and Subaltern studies. Book excerpt: Beginning with Timur, Sultan Ghazni who invaded India seventeen times at the head of a large army, plundering the country of its great wealth, to the last Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah, banished from the country by the British - details and descriptions of every incident and each king astonish and exhilarate us. The approach is direct, simple and unambiguous. From Timur to Bahadur Shah it is one engaging account. The book should find a place in every household, as an authentic account of ourselves. A flawless portrait. -THE HINDU Madhan while explaining historical events uses modern similes... In spite of being a cartoonist in his previous avatar Madhan did not caricature the Moghul Emperors and their subjects. I am so pleased he did not sit on judgement as a south Indian non-Muslim writer. -KAMAL HAASAN

Book excerpt: There was never an armed secessionist movement in the Tamil regions of India, whereas in Sri Lanka the discriminatory regimes and failed political struggles of Tamils led to an armed uprising… The Indian administration was incorrectly led to believe that the rise of armed movements in Sri Lanka would lead to rise of secessionist movement in Tamil Nadu… The armed movement(LTTE) in Sri Lanka was built of a Portfolio of skills for over two decades – transcontinental organization, technological excellence, combative mind-set, international network with - governments, civilians, media, underworld, capabilities to manufacture battlefield weapons, on-field battle strategy, financing models, stealth operations, covert intelligence operations unit, sleeper cells, political lobbying, publicity and propaganda skills, lightning fast manoeuvrability across combat regions and sourcing & supply chain management of arms & ammunitions… The Author describes the events leading up to the military defeat of the LTTE that began at least twelve years ago in Mozambique where the LTTE stole arms & ammunitions purchased by the Sri Lankan Military. The event alerted the Western Powers to sit up and mark the LTTE in the danger lists as a non-state actor that had acquired abilities to strike with a transcontinental infrastructure and unbelievable stealth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deriving inspiration from Swami Vivekananda’s exhortation that the highest philosophy must be put in concrete moral forms so that anyone can grasp, Swami Vimurtananda, under the pseudonym of Bhamathimaindan, had written several stories that were published in Sri Ramakrishna Vijayam, the Tamil monthly published from Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai. This book is a collection of English translation of twenty-five such stories. It offers eternal messages packaged in imaginative stories of real-life significance under the title Speaking Flute that conjures up visions of Sri Krishna from whose mystic flute divine music issues forth in recurring waves. The slender volume is a good example of impeccable story-telling. It is ideal for non-detailed study by school students.

But did Ravin’s story really end on the last page of that book? On Valentine’s Day; a radio station in Chandigarh hosts a very special romantic chat show. Ravin and his three best friends are invited as guests to talk about Ravin’s love story. But surprisingly everyone apart from Ravin turns up. As the show goes live; there is only one question in every listener’s mind: what has happened to Ravin? To answer this question the three friends begin reading from a handwritten copy of Ravin’s incomplete second book—the entire city listens breathlessly; unable to believe the revelations that follow.
