Book excerpt: Trigonometric parallaxes of 16 nearby planetary nebulae are presented, including reduced errors for seven objects with previous initial results and results for six new objects. The median error in the parallax is 0.42 mas, and 12 nebulae have parallax errors of less than 20%. The parallax for PHL 932 is found here to be smaller than was measured by Hipparcos, and this peculiar object is discussed. Comparisons are made with other distance estimates. The distances determined from these parallaxes tend to be intermediate between some short distance estimates and other long estimates; they are somewhat smaller than those estimated from spectra of the central stars. Proper motions and tangential velocities are presented. No astrometric perturbations from unresolved close companions are detected.

Book excerpt: We present absolute parallaxes and relative proper motions for the central stars of the planetary nebulae NGC 6853 (The Dumbbell), NGC 7293 (The Helix), Abell 31, and DeHt 5. This paper details our reduction and analysis using DeHt 5 as an example. We obtain these planetary nebula nuclei (PNNi) parallaxes with astrometric data from Fine Guidance Sensors FGS 1r and FGS 3, white-light interferometers on the Hubble Space Telescope. Proper motions, spectral classifications and VJHKT2M and DDO51 photometry of the stars comprising the astrometric reference frames provide spectrophotometric estimates of reference star absolute parallaxes. Introducing these into our model as observations with error, we determine absolute parallaxes for each PNN.

The first question is a double question: why a conference on this subject and why a workshop? The first idea of organizing this workshop came while reading the scientific objectives of one of the instruments onboard the ISO satel lite (a phase A document concerning the IR camera). On going through the scientific motivations for building the instrument I realized with surprise that no mention was made of Planetary Nebulae (PN). At present this is no longer true. There is a chapter indicating the capabilities of the camera in the PN field and what we can reasonably expect from that instrument. But it was at this moment that the first idea of organizing a workshop on the subject of PN came. Of course there are other, stronger motivations. The first one is that I think this is the right moment after IRAS. I think we all spent the last two or three years working on IRAS data. IRAS represented a corner-stone for those working on Planetary Nebulae: the amount of data that came out of the instruments onboard the satellite was enormous and opened up new ways of looking at planetary nebulae, as well as at other fields.
