Book excerpt: "I can't believe how much I just learned!" That was one mom's response after observing a single class session of Trick Geography. Trick Geography: USA Student Book (Teacher Guide sold separately) is a simple, yet powerful geography curriculum which routinely moves students from geographic illiteracy to command of US states, capitals, and major bodies of water, mountains, deserts, and plains in just a few weeks. And all with ease and high retention! Delightful graphics, phonetic connectors, dot-to-dots, and fill-in-the-blanks facilitate multiple learning styles and make the process more like a game than a curriculum. It is easy enough for elementary students yet sophisticated enough for the high schooler. Teachers appreciate the simple instructions which require virtually no prep time or learning curve and which give students the option of going through the program on their own. Evaluation is a cinch with matching tests which are included. Recommended for ages 8 to adult. 56 pages. (The Trick Geography: World edition is also available.)

Book excerpt: Now a new series on Peacock with Rainn Wilson, THE GEOGRAPHY OF BLISS is part travel memoir, part humor, and part twisted self-help guide that takes the viewer across the globe to investigate not what happiness is, but WHERE it is. Are people in Switzerland happier because it is the most democratic country in the world? Do citizens of Qatar, awash in petrodollars, find joy in all that cash? Is the King of Bhutan a visionary for his initiative to calculate Gross National Happiness? Why is Asheville, North Carolina so damn happy? In a unique mix of travel, psychology, science and humor, Eric Weiner answers those questions and many others, offering travelers of all moods some interesting new ideas for sunnier destinations and dispositions.

Book Synopsis The Oldest Trick in the Book by : Ben M. Debney
Download or read book The Oldest Trick in the Book written by Ben M. Debney and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-03 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the normalisation of blame-shifting within ideological discourse as a broad feature of history, working from Churchill’s truism that history is written by the victors. To that end, it explores historical episodes of political persecution carried out under cover of moral panic, highlighting the process of ‘Othering’ common to each and theorising a historical model of panic-driven scapegoating from the results. Building this model from case studies in witch panic, communist panic and terrorist panic respectively, The Oldest Trick in the Book builds an argument that features common to each case study reflect broader historical patterning consistent with Churchill’s maxim. On this basis it argues that the periodic construction of bogeymen or ‘folk demons’ is a useful device for enabling the kind of victim-playing and victim-blaming critical to protecting elite privilege during periods of crisis and that in being a recurring theme historically, panic-driven scapegoating retains great ongoing value to the privileged and powerful, and thus conspicuously remains an ongoing feature of world politics.
Book Synopsis Cinematic Cartography by : Chris Lukinbeal
Download or read book Cinematic Cartography written by Chris Lukinbeal and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-20 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uniquely bridges the conceptual gap between the history of geographic, cartographic thought, and film theory with the technological and cultural shifts that shaped the emergence of cameras and cinema. Adorned with illustrative figures, examples, and case studies throughout, the book explores how cinema lends itself to cartography and, in turn, how cartography relates to both the individual and collective experience of cinema. By using cartography to understand space and scale in film, the book moves away from textual analysis or representation analysis to focus on the locational attribution of the sites where the cinematic landscape is being produced. It contends that viewers of moving images are active players in a complex network of cultural and mental geographies. This volume is essential reading for students, scholars, and academics of cinematography, human, cultural, and social geography, cartography, and media studies, as well as those interested in these areas more generally.
