Download or read book We Were Adivasis written by Megan Moodie and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-08-20 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In We Were Adivasis, anthropologist Megan Moodie examines the Indian state’s relationship to “Scheduled Tribes,” or adivasis—historically oppressed groups that are now entitled to affirmative action quotas in educational and political institutions. Through a deep ethnography of the Dhanka in Jaipur, Moodie brings readers inside the creative imaginative work of these long-marginalized tribal communities. She shows how they must simultaneously affirm and refute their tribal status on a range of levels, from domestic interactions to historical representation, by relegating their status to the past: we were adivasis. Moodie takes readers to a diversity of settings, including households, tribal council meetings, and wedding festivals, to reveal the aspirations that are expressed in each. Crucially, she demonstrates how such aspiration and identity-building are strongly gendered, requiring different dispositions required of men and women in the pursuit of collective social uplift. The Dhanka strategy for occupying the role of adivasi in urban India comes at a cost: young women must relinquish dreams of education and employment in favor of community-sanctioned marriage and domestic life. Ultimately, We Were Adivasis explores how such groups negotiate their pasts to articulate different visions of a yet uncertain future in the increasingly liberalized world.
Book Synopsis Emerging Tribal Identity by : Sohan Lal Sharma
Download or read book Emerging Tribal Identity written by Sohan Lal Sharma and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the years in India, sociologists, anthropologists, and the non-tribal masses have, deliberately or inadvertently, developed an image of a 'tribal' as that of a sub-human being, fully deprived of the attributes of a civilized life. One such tribe is the Mina tribal society of India's Eastern Rajasthan. The Minas lived in isolation for a long period of history. When India's Criminal Tribe Act was dropped, the Minas began to come closer to the regional caste culture. The constitutional safeguards and securities guaranteed to the Minas have brought about certain social and cultural changes among them. This has also changed the image of the Minas in particular and the other tribal groups in general. This new image has created concerns about their social and cultural identity. The Minas have now made their entry into government services. They have also attained some of the characteristics of modernity. This present work studies the developments among the Mina tribal society of Eastern Rajasthan. The book will be of special interest to researchers, policy makers, and bureaucrats concerned with tribal development.

Book Synopsis A review of studies examining the link between food insecurity and malnutrition by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book A review of studies examining the link between food insecurity and malnutrition written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of 120 studies published since 2006 was undertaken to examine the relationship between food insecurity at the household or individual level and the following nutrition indicators: child stunting, child wasting, low birth weight, exclusive breastfeeding of infants < 6 months of age, anaemia in women of reproductive age, child overweight and adult obesity. While there is some evidence of a direct association between food insecurity and stunting for children in lower-middle and upper-middle income countries, evidence of links between food insecurity and either child wasting or overweight is almost absent, with the exception of an association with overweight among girls in middle- and high-income countries. The obesity–food insecurity link is most predominant among women in high-income countries, while it is almost absent in men. In addition, food insecurity increases the risk for low birth weight in infants and anaemia in women. Methodological concerns that pose challenges for valid comparison of results relate to study design, data analysis techniques, use of different indicators of household/individual food security and malnutrition, and the limited availability of high-quality micro-level data from large-scale surveys. Most studies report correlation rather than causal associations between food insecurity and nutrition indicators; longitudinal micro-level data from large-scale surveys can help establish causal association and capture the dynamic nature of food insecurity. Food insecurity emerges as a predictor of undernutrition as well as overweight and obesity, highlighting the need for multisectoral strategies and policies to combat food insecurity and multiple forms of malnutrition.
