Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2012, the Bombay High Court celebrated the 150th year of its existence. As one of three high courts first set up in colonial India in 1862, it functioned as a court of original and appellate jurisdiction during the British Raj for over 80 years, occupying the topmost rung of the judicial hierarchy in the all-important Bombay Presidency. Yet, remarkably little is known of how the court functioned during the colonial era. The historiography of the court is quite literally anecdotal. The most well known books written on the history of the court focus on humorous (at times, possibly apocryphal) stories about 'eminent' judges and 'great' lawyers, bordering on hagiography. Examining the backgrounds and lives of the 83 judges-Britons and Indians-who served on the Bombay High Court during the colonial era, and by exploring the court's colonial past, this book attempts to understand why British colonial institutions like the Bombay High Court flourished even after India became independent. In the process, this book will attempt to unravel complex changes which took place in Indian society, the legal profession, the law, and the legal culture during the colonial era.

Book excerpt: TRANSCATHETER MITRAL VALVE THERAPIES An essential survey of the advancing field of transcatheter mitral valve repair and replacement Minimally invasive transcatheter therapies have revolutionized the treatment of structural heart disease. Greatly improving outcomes for higher-risk patients, transcatheter aortic valve replacement is now established as a safe and effective alternative to invasive surgery. The mitral valve, however, poses further challenges. Contending with one of the heat’s most anatomically and pathologically complex components, practitioners and engineers have yet to perfect a stream-lined, widely deliverable therapy—though they are getting closer and closer to this goal. Transcatheter Mitral Valve Therapies provides a far-reaching survey of the field of mitral interventions in its current state. Highlighting the stumbling blocks preventing transcatheter mitral valve replacement’s widespread adoption, the book’s international group of contributors discuss the improvements to be made in repair and replacement procedures, as well as the adjunctive use of imaging and pharmacologic therapies. This ground-breaking text: Provides detailed explanations of transcatheter repair, transcatheter replacement, and adjunctive procedures Features chapters on the use of imaging to aid in patient selection, procedure planning, and intra-operative guidance Discusses the importance of minimally invasive approaches for mitral valve repair Examines anticoagulation following transcatheter mitral valve interventions Outlines the possible future of transcatheter mitral valve therapy Transcatheter Mitral Valve Therapies is an important, up-to-date resource for interventional cardiologists, as well as all clinical researchers and practitioners seeking information on this vital and developing treatment.

Book excerpt: Lakshmibai Tilak was born in 1868 into a strict Maharashtrian Brahmin family in a village near Nashik. And at the age of eleven, she was married off to poet Narayan Waman Tilak, a man much older than her. In Smritichitre, Lakshmibai candidly describes her complex relationship with her husband--their constant bickering over his disregard for material possessions, which quite often left them penniless, and his bouts of intense rage in these moments. But at the core of their relationship was their concern for society and the well-being of every human being, irrespective of caste, class or gender, and their unwavering devotion to each other. Equally touching is her recounting of his conversion to Christianity which led to a separation of five long years. After their reunion, she, too, was gradually disillusioned with orthodox Hindu customs and caste divisions, and converted to Christianity. After Narayan Tilak's death in 1919, she came into her own as a matron in a girls' hostel in Mumbai and later gathered enough courage to move to Karachi with her family. When first published in Marathi in 1934, Smritichitre became an instant classic. Lakshmibai's honesty and her recounting of every difficulty she faced with unfailing humour make Smritichitre a memorable read. Shanta Gokhale's masterly translation of this classic is the only complete one available in English.

Book excerpt: Demand for quality higher education, is continuing to outpace the supply due to growing population of young people, gains in school education, growing middle class and their rising aspirations. At the same time, the country has a unique opportunity to convert this demographic surplus to its economic strength by providing its young people the right kind of skills. Thus, higher education now occupies a central position in the country's strategy for global competitiveness and inclusive growth. Steps have been initiated to augment supply, improve quality and fix problems. The National Knowledge Commission (NKC) has made several useful and important recommendations and the government has significantly increased funding during the Eleventh Five Year Plan. In the backdrop of these developments, Indian Higher Education: Envisioning the Future, describes the Indian higher education landscape. The author spells out the needs, identifies the gaps, and based on the lessons learnt from the experiences of other countries provides perspectives to shape its future.
