Book excerpt: TREVOR HARDING, pursues his Ms. In archeology at Hebrew University, Jerusalem, and falls in love with Rachel Rosenberg, his arch professors daughter. She gives him short shrift when he tries to get acquainted. She emits the same angst against Gentiles as Professor Rosenberg. Trevors hopelessness becomes hopeful when Rachel is hospitalized; the result of a suicide bomber. Trevor visits Rachel in the hospital. She is traumatized, refuses to eat, and harbors a death wish. With much cajoling and shaming, he gets her eating and wanting to live again. Love enters between spoons of food and knitting of bones. The professor, finding the pair laughing and kibitzing, takes umbrage at their conviviality. He removes his daughter from the hospital against medical advice...eliminating the Goyim factor. Trevor is sent to Egypt to help a sister dig. Rachel, recovered, visits friends of Trevors; David and Ida Sherman, Messianic Jews. When Trevor returns he finds Rachel has become a believer in Jesus, the Messiah. High hopes. They are spiritually on the same wave length. Plans for marriage surface. Fate has other plans. Rachel is killed as a bomb strikes the plant where she works. Trevor is distraught. Life loses meaning; God is unjust. Fears and distrust stalk him. Another beauty from the States enters camp. But... she s spoken for. Has Cupid taken umbrage against our hero age 29? Au contraire. A guardian angel nudges Cupid out of the way and everything in Trevors garden comes up lovely.

Book excerpt: A charmingly illustrated, alluring biography of the florid-and pocky-cheeked, intensely blue-eyed, chin-scarred, sandpaper-throated British actor who early on played romantic leads but quickly fell into more blustery character roles. The hell-raising, hard-drinking, outsized Howard of later years was born of a Lloyds of London underwriter of whom Howard saw little, and of a mother addicted to travel and globe-hopping and who thus exposed Howard and his sister Merla to such exotic places as Ceylon and Colorado. At a loss for a profession, Howard went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, found acting to be work that fit like a glove; and has remained a dedicated professional ever since. His first ten years were spent as a stage actor, playing Sheridan, Shaw, Shakespeare, and the moderns; his first film role was as a naval officer in The Way Ahead in 1944, for Carol Reed. He is best remembered for his brilliant first starring role as the romantically beleaguered married doctor in the evergreen classic Brief Encounter (1945). Howard's gifts have been squandered in dozens of feeble films, while some of his best work remains unsung. Childless, his marriage to Helen Cherry has lasted since they first played opposite each other onstage in 1943. He is a determinedly private eccentric (and ex-hell-raiser) who never talks shop offstage. A better than average movie bio.

Book excerpt: *A Sunday Times Top 10 Bestseller* 'What a writer he was; he could flip over a sentence so gently, and showthe underbelly in a heartbeat. His work is always quietly compassionate' Elizabeth Strout In this final collection of ten exquisite, perceptive and profound stories, William Trevor probes into the depths of the human spirit. Here we encounter a tutor and his pupil, whose lives are thrown into turmoil when they meet again years later; a young girl who discovers the mother she believed dead is alive and well; and a piano-teacher who accepts her pupil's theft in exchange for his beautiful music. These gorgeous stories - the last that Trevor wrote before his death - affirm his place as one of the world's greatest storytellers. 'Trevor is a master of both language and storytelling' Hilary Mantel 'He is one of the great short-story writers, at his best the equal of Chekhov' John Banville 'The greatest living writer of short stories in the English language' New Yorker

This book was released on 1993 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irish novelist and short-story writer William Trevor ranks with the most compelling contemporary authors exploring the workings of evil in human life and the paradoxical nature of redemption. From the Old Boys (1964) to The Silence in the Garden (1988) - a subtle portrayal of child murder as emblem of colonial exploitation - and Two Lives (1991) - with its terrorist attack and transformed wilderness - Trevor has produced a significant body of work, sometimes comic, sometimes disturbing, and always finely crafted. His contribution to literature wins him high praise from critics and a wide readership on both sides of the Atlantic. In this comprehensive study, Kristin Morrison examines the intellectual framework of all Trevor's fiction, showing how his novels and short stories are governed by a "system of correspondences" wherein "political acts, historical events, and moral states are inextricably linked: public and private worlds mirror each other". Individual chapters consider Trevor's image of the garden as simultaneously a lost Eden and a potential Paradise; his preoccupation with evil and increasing emphasis on the connections between political violence and personal cruelty; the importance of Irish history, settings, and characters throughout his writing career; his tragicomic vision and primary rhetorical strategies; his predominant character types, especially "children, celibates, and holy fools". Morrison positions Trevor's fiction by comparing it with the work of authors as diverse as John Banville, Brian Moore, Toni Morrison, and Jonathan Swift. Rare interview material contributes importantly to the picture of Trevor as an unequivocally Irish writer. An informed and luciddiscussion, William Trevor will prove highly useful to both scholars and general readers interested in contemporary English and Irish fiction.

Book excerpt: What is emo? For starters it's a form of melodic, confessional, or EMOtional punk rock. But emo is more than a genre of music–it's the defining counterculture movement of the '00s. EVERYBODY HURTS is a reference book for emo, tracing its angsty roots all the way from Shakespeare to Holden Caufield to today's most popular bands. There's nothing new about that perfect chocolate and peanut butter combination––teenagers and angst. What is new is that emo is the first cultural movement born on the internet. With the development of early social networking sites like Make Out Club (whose mission is to unite "like–minded nerds, loners, indie rockers, record collectors, video gamers, hardcore kids, and artists through friendship, music, and sometimes even love") outcast teens had a place to find each other and share their pain, their opinions, and above all, their music–which wasn't available for sale at the local record store. Authors Leslie Simon and Trevor Kelley lead the reader through the world of emo including its ideology, music, and fashion, as well as its influences on film, television, and literature. With a healthy dose of snark and sarcasm, EVERYBODY HURTS uses diagrams, illustrations, timelines, and step–by–step instructions to help the reader successfully achieve the ultimate emo lifestyle. Or, alternately, teach him to spot an emo kid across the mall in order to mock him mercilessly.
