Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer is a word that rightly strikes fear into the collective heart of humanity. It is a brutally indiscriminate killer and incurable (to date) disease. Able to infest any part of the body, from the brain to the bones to the lungs and liver, cancer seemingly mocks the inability to eliminate it. Treatment for cancer varies depending on the severity and type of neoplasm the patient has. The most well-known of these responses is chemotherapy, which involves the use of chemicals. In order to stem the spread of a patient's cancer, chemotherapy has the patient undergo a series of doses aimed at killing the cancerous cells. Unfortunately, the chemicals can also destroy healthy cells, particularly those that divide quickly. This action leads to side effects such as hair loss, fatigue, nausea, and anaemia. Even though the treatments may be of an overall benefit in eliminating or slowing cancer, the period of treatment is often an arduous one for the patient. Modern research has led to a virtual new era in chemotherapy with target drugs. This book brings together the latest research results in the fast moving field.

Book excerpt: Given the latest advances in cancer research, which includes basic research and its derived diagnostic, clinical, and therapeutic applications, the book New Trends in Cancer for the 21st Century is written by individuals such as molecular biologists, whose tasks are to decipher, after sequencing the human genome, those new genes and pathways involved in the carcinogenesis process; clinical and molecular pathologists, who apply these discoveries for the molecular diagnosis and characterization of the tumor; and clinical oncologists, who treat patients. Pharmacogenetics introduces new perspectives in the translational fields with the design of drugs against specific targets, which at this moment are in clinical trials phases. This book achieves a state of the art in every field of cancer research and discusses the new perspectives that will open the future for cancer treatment (basic research, new technologies, new drugs, therapies...). For this reason, the book is intended for pathologists, clinicians, and biologists, as well as fellows and students of physiology and medicine.

Cancer can arise in many sites and behave differently depending on its organ of origin. If a cancer spreads (metastasises), the new tumour bears the same name as the original (primary) tumour. Significant progress has been made in recent years in the battle against cancer and in understanding its underlying biological mechanisms. This research progress has resulted in many experimental treatments and cures which establish hope for wide-spread cures. This book brings together important research from around the world in this frontal field.

Yet, new technology is often cited as a key factor in skyrocketing medical costs. This volume, second in the Medical Innovation at the Crossroads series, examines how economic incentives for innovation are changing and what that means for the future of health care. Up-to-date with a wide variety of examples and case studies, this book explores how payment, patent, and regulatory policiesâ€"as well as the involvement of numerous government agenciesâ€"affect the introduction and use of new pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and surgical procedures. The volume also includes detailed comparisons of policies and patterns of technological innovation in Western Europe and Japan. This fact-filled and practical book will be of interest to economists, policymakers, health administrators, health care practitioners, and the concerned public.

Book excerpt: Dietary supplements and nutraceuticals such as Vitamin A and D, Omega-3 and probiotics are used as part of the cancer treatment as complimenting the main therapy. Several Nutraceuticals have shown to boost the immune responses, while emerging clinical studies and other research suggests that some plant-based agents may, indeed, impact late-stage cancer, influencing molecular processes corrupted by tumor cells to evade detection, expand clonally, and invade surrounding tissues. Advances in Nutraceutical Applications in Cancer: Recent Research Trends and Clinical Applications is an attempt to collect evidence and related clinical information of application of Nutraceuticals to be used in cancer treatment or compliment the cancer treatment. It contains 16 chapters written by experts in related field’s and covers many different aspects of the formulation and development of Nutraceuticals for cancer applications. This book covers efficacy, safety and toxicological aspects of nutraceuticals. It also addresses various novel drug delivery systems of nutraceuticals with anticancer properties, as well as nutraceuticals as supplements for cancer prevention. Features: Offers a comprehensive view of neutraceuticals’ role in cancer prevention and treatment Covers the applications and implications of neutraceuticals in prostate, colorectal, breast and gynecological cancers Discusses the principles of neutrigenomics and neutrigenetics in cancer prevention Explors the role of probiotics and micronutrients in cancer treatment and prevention Nutraceuticals can alter the gut microbiota. Gut microbiome undergoes changes during the disease status and followed by the cancer treatment. Nutraceutical’s role in proliferation and prevention of gynecological cancers, nutraceutical’s role in proliferation and prevention of prostate cancer and role of micronutrients in cancer prevention, both pros and cons, are some of the topics discussed in various chapters in this book. This book is addressed to scientists, clinicians, and students who are working in the area of Nutraceutical applications in cancer treatment.

Stomach cancer represents roughly 2 percent (25,500) cases of all new cancer cases yearly in the United States, but it is much more common in Japan, Great Britain, South America, and Iceland. It is associated with high salt in the diet, smoking, and low intake of fruits and vegetables.Infection with H. pylori is the main risk factor in about 80 percent or more of gastric cancers. It is more common in men. A very small percentage of diffuse-type gastric cancers are thought to be genetic. Hereditary Diffuse Gastric Cancer (HDGC) has only recently been identified and research is ongoing, but genetic testing and treatment options are available for families at risk. Metastasis occurs in 80-90 percent of individuals with stomach cancer, with a five year survival rate of 75 percent in those diagnosed in early stages and less than 30 percent of those diagnosed in late stages. This book presents new and important research from around the world.

It may present with vaginal bleeding but symptoms may be absent until the cancer is in advanced stages, which has made cervical cancer the focus of intense screening efforts utilising the Pap smear. Most scientific studies point to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection which is responsible for 90% of the cases of cervical cancer. There are 7 most common types of HPV-16, 18, 31, 33, 42, 52 and 58. Types 16 and 18 being the most common cause of the cancer. Treatment is with surgery (including local excision) in early stages and chemotherapy and radiotherapy in advanced stages of the disease. This book presents cutting edge research in this study of cervical cancer. This involves, new perspectives in pharmacological treatments, anti-hormonal agents, therapeutic trends for patients, nerve sparing treatments, antibodies in single chain formats, predictors of radiation response, lymphatic mapping and docetaxel labelling with radionuclides.
