AEDS compiles these statistics on alcohol-related inpatient stays based on a national sample of hospital discharge episodes from the National Hospital Discharge Survey (NHDS), conducted annually by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). Civilian population data estimated by the U.S. Census Bureau are used as the denominators to calculate rates.
