Since reading that, I touch his books With reverence and read With a feeling of awe in my heart. I Wish that some way might be devised to put this book into the hands, and heads, and hearts, of every boy and girl in the world, as a lesson and an inspiration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Our Trees in Twenty-Four Lessons The use of this book will be found greatly simplified by its arrangement into 24 lessons, each complete with its own practical work. In setting additional questions, it should be remembered that children are apt to answer observation questions correctly without using their brains more than they can help. The questions therefore, should be framed so as to evoke thought as well as observation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cordon Training of Fruit Trees: Diagonal, Vertical, Spiral, Horizontal, Adapted to the Orchard-House and Open-Air Culture This feeling is not altogether without its uses, and the author hastens to say, that this short work is the result of much leisure time, which an enforced idleness, the result of over-fatigue in the charge of a large parish, unexpectedly created. Summer after summer, and winter after winter, was passed by him abroad. It was impossible to be unemployed, and thus he was enabled to observe the various modes of fruit culture practised in different countries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under the Trees: And Elsewhere For the general lavishness and prodigality of my passing mood, betrays their lack of discernment, their defect of taste, and their slight acquaintance with myself. I should much prefer that they would leave my woods and fields untrodden, and not disturb my mountain solitudes with their ignorant and vulgar raptures. The people who really know me and love me seek me oftener at other seasons, when I am more at leisure, and can bid them to a more intimate companionship. They come to understand my finer moods and deeper secrets of beauty; the elusive loveliness which I leave behind me to lure on my true friends through the late autumn, they find and follow with the eye and heart of love; the rare and splendid aspects in which I often discover my presence in midwinter they enjoy all the more because I have with drawn myself from the gaze of the crowd; and the first faint touches of colour and soft breathings of life, which announce my return in the early spring, they greet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Windfalls IN offering a third basket of windfalls from a modest orchard, it is hoped that the fruit will not be found to have deteriorated. If that is the case, I shall hold myself free to take another look under the trees at my leisure. But I fancy the three baskets will complete the garnering. The old orchard from which the fruit has been so largely gathered is passing from me, and the new orchard to which I go has not yet matured. Perhaps in the course of years it will furnish material for a collection of autumn leaves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legal and Equitable, Rights and Liabilities as to Trees and Woods The Author had occasion, in the early part of the year 1863, to investigate one of the questions discussed in these pages; and he was thus reminded of an opinion, he had long ago entertained, that a collection of the decisions on the subj ect of Timber and Trees, would be interesting and useful. He thought that the leisure of a Chancery Long Vacation in these days a clear three months) would afford ample time for this purpose, and he applied himself then to the task, but found he was greatly mistaken as to its duration. The great amount of trouble; which its prose cution has occasioned to him, confirms his belief, that he will have saved much time to his friends, by bringing together materials so widely scattered, and arranging them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Report on the Trees and Shrubs Growing Naturally in the Forests of Massachusetts, 1846 In the Conspectus, or Distribution into Families and Genera, I have attempted to offer a substitute, so far as the plants treat ed of in this Report are concerned, for the arrangement by the artificial system. This attempt I submit with many misgivings. If it shall be considered a failure, it may at least serve to aid others 111 more successfully accomplishing the object. My sketches of the natural families, and, in a considerable degree, of the genera, are necessarily drawn mostly from books; and, as they are taken from the standard works of the science, Endlicher, Lindley, Torrey, and others, are usually given with out particular acknowledgment of the source. Botanists will here, however, find some points touched upon which have not usually received much attention from scientific writers. The descriptions of the species of all the trees, and nearly all the shrubs, are my own, except where I have expressly given credit to others. To collect my materials, I have scoured the forests in almost every part of the State, from the western hills of Berkshire to Martha's Vineyard, and from the banks of the Merrimack to the shores of Buzzard's and Narragansett Bays. The leisure of several summers was first spent in ascertaining what the ligneous plants of Massachusetts are, and how they are distributed. If I have not discovered new species, I have found new localities for several oaks, willows, poplars, pines, and birches, and some others of less importance, and have thus enlarged the Flora of the State. That some species have escaped me is altogether probable, as, even in the summer of 1845, I found the Red Birch growing abundantly on a branch of the Merrimack, some hundreds of miles further north than it had previously been noticed by any botanist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fisheries and Fishery Industries of the United States It is now nearly four hundred years Since these grounds were first fished upon by Europeans, and their resources are still unfailing; but the fishing interests have been mainly transferred to the New World, France alone of European countries having continued to send fishing vessels across the Atlantic down to 1880. Since then, however, the Portuguese have begun to exhibit some activity in connection with the cod fishery of the Grand Bank, and in the Spring and sum mer of 1885 bought several New England fishing schooners and fitted out others from home ports. Their voyages proving generally successful, they have added more vessels to their fishing fleet during the latter part of this year, and it is quite possible that, in the course of a few seasons.
