Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trees and Shrubs of Prospect Park This book has been prepared to aid the city nature lovers who frequent our beautiful Park in identifying its trees and shrubs by diagrams of location and text description. Its need grew out of actual experience and it is hoped that its service will be direct and practical. How many there are who come to our Park to whom the trees are simply trees and the shrubs, bushes. The individuality of the oak, the horn beam, or the maple is lost to them in the general mass. Many of these would gladly learn had they the time or opportunity and to meet the needs of such and also to supplement mere identification with descriptions of characteristics of form, foliage, flower and fruit, has been the governing purpose in the general plan of preparing this book. Its method is self-evident and the park rambler, following the paths, soon gets to recognize the various types of trees and shrubs. These grow more and more distinctive and individual as their observed characteristics become more familiar to him and he finds out that when these have been once learned thoroughly, not.only has he learned them for Prospect Park, but for Central Park, and, in short, for the parks of most cities of climatic conditions similar to ours. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Generally, Trieste books are purchased singly - on demand, however they may also be purchased in bulk. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trees and Shrubs of Central Park The very cordial welcome given to my guide to the trees and shrubs of Prospect Park has induced me to publish a similar handbook for the Central Park of this city. The purpose of this book is to put within reach of the non-technical city nature lover a handy means of identifying the trees and shrubs which he meets in his park rambles. This identification once effected adds immeasurable enjoyment to these rambles. It is exasperating to walk the park paths and see the handsome shrubs and trees and not know what they are. Many of them are of foreign character and, although the rambler may know the native species, when these unusual foreign forms confront him he cannot recognize them, for they are seldom given in the popular handbooks. He has not time, nor opportunity, nor the knowledge, it may be, to hunt them out in the larger botanical works. It is the aim of this book to supply this want. Its plan is simple and direct. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hardy Ornamental Flowering Trees and Shrubs This book has been written and is published with the distinct object in view of bringing home to the minds of planters of Hardy Trees and Shrubs, the fact that the monotonous repetition, in at least nine-tenths of our Parks and Gardens, of such Trees as the Elm, the Lime, and the Oak, and such Shrubs as the Cherry Laurel and the Privet, is neither necessary nor desirable. There is quite a host of choice and beautiful flowering species, which, though at present not generally known are yet perfectly hardy, of the simplest culture, and equally well adapted for the ornamentation of our Public and Private Parks and Gardens. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trees and Shrubbery: Adapted to the Soil and Climate of Nashville, in Relation to Yards, Streets and Public ParksIt is a remarkable and astonishing fact, that men, living in the midst of primeval forests, constituted of the most magnificent trees in the world, had to go on a pilgrimage to the other side of the globe, to the shrines of Buddha and the South-sea Islands, to obtain a pair of trees of no peculiar merits for ornamental planting. However, we ought to look even upon such errors with a degree of reverence as the first attempts in a prudent and beneficial enterprise. Civilization and culture of plants have been wedded together in all ages of which we possess historical records, and laws and religious ceremonies relative to the culture of cereals and fruit-bearing trees were recognized by the most ancient nations of both continents. A sacred law prohibited the adorers of Osiris to damage fruit trees, and the first commandment in the Zend-Avesta says: "Thou shalt cultivate the field, and plant fruit-bearing trees." The acknowledgment of the great blessings conferred upon man by the arborescent vegetation in support of life and aid in the simple industries, led primarily to the veneration and worship of trees, and this sentiment of reverence advises us to find in it the root and origin of the early rising of a profound sense of the love of nature amongst the Semitic, Indie and Iranic nations. Wherever the mind had matured so as to be able to conceive the beautiful in the aspect of nature and to create the desire to enjoy this pleasure in the fullest measure, there was originated the first artificial plantations. Diodorus describes the gardens laid out by Semiramis at the foot of the mountain Bagistanos. Rows of cypresses, whose obelisk-like form recalls to the mind the shape of flames, stood around the sanctuary of the temple of Zoroaster, and the residences of the Persian kings were surrounded by extensive artificial plantations of great beauty. These ancient Asiatic gardens, "Paradeisoi" of the Greek authors, derive their name from the old Persian "Pardes," and this again descends from the Sanscrit "Paradesa," which means an environ.I take occasion to make some historical remarks to guard against the acceptance of that hollow phrase, "Modern Civilization," as the originator and distributor of every art and knowledge, thought to elevate and beautify human life.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
