Book excerpt: "This work examines the theological relationship between creation and creativity in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. It does so by bringing together a synthesis of various disciplines and perspectives to the creativity of J.R.R. Tolkien. Hart and Khovacs provide a fresh reading of these important themes in Tolkien, and the result captures the multi-faceted nature of Tolkien's own vivid theology and literary imagination." --Amazon.com.

This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of oral tales from the south Indian region of Kannada represents the culmination of a lifetime of research by A. K. Ramanujan, one of the most revered scholars and writers of his time. The result of over three decades' labor, this long-awaited collection makes available for the first time a wealth of folktales from a region that has not yet been adequately represented in world literature. Ramanujan's skill as a translator, his graceful writing style, and his profound love and understanding of the subject enrich the tales that he collected, translated, and interpreted. With a written literature recorded from about 800 A.D., Kannada is rich in mythology, devotional and secular poetry, and more recently novels and plays. Ramanujan, born in Mysore in 1929, had an intimate knowledge of the language. In the 1950s, when working as a college lecturer, he began collecting these tales from everyone he could—servants, aunts, schoolteachers, children, carpenters, tailors. In 1970 he began translating and interpreting the tales, a project that absorbed him for the next three decades. When Ramanujan died in 1993, the translations were complete and he had written notes for about half of the tales. With its unsentimental sympathies, its laughter, and its delightfully vivid sense of detail, the collection stands as a significant and moving monument to Ramanujan's memory as a scholar and writer. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1997.

Book excerpt: "From the towering Burmese magnificum, with its three-foot-diameter trunk and its masses of sweet-smelling purple flowers, to the potted pink azalea, glowing like a burning bush on the backyard garden patio, Rhododendron is a genus of infinite variety and beauty. There are 1,025 known species: it is a native of the snows of the Himalayas and the swamps of the Carolinas, the jungles of Borneo and the island inlets of Japan. It is also one of the oldest of plants - many believe the dove that returned to Noah's ark was carrying a rhododendron sprig - although it has been known to western horticulture for only 300 years. The curious history of Westerners and rhododendrons is full of swashbuckling plant collectors and visionary gardeners, colonial violence and ecological destruction, stunning botanical successes and bitter business disappointments. And it is here related with consummate skill by Jane Brown, an English garden writer."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Tales of Bong Tree Island is an entertaining and informative illustrated historical fantasy book for people of all ages who enjoy Edward Lear's poem The Owl and The Pussycat, but have always wanted to know more. World famous explorer, Martine Bates of Gloucester, MA, is contacted by the Queen of England and invited to lead an expedition to locate the land where the Bong Trees grow. & ;British subjects and legends, Barney and Caterina (aka The Owl and The Pussycat), had departed Ramsgate, England on December 31, 1870 in search of a place where they could be free to love and marry without fear of interspecies relationship discrimination. They had sailed for a year and a day and finally reached the land where Bong Trees grow and interspecies marriage is accepted, but no one had ever heard from them again or been able to locate the place where they had settled. A good friend of the Royal Family, explorer and photographer, Alpheus Pomfry, had traveled in search of Bong Tree Island in 1908, but never returned and was presumed lost at sea.& ;With the help of an old map created by Alpheus Pomfry that Martine Bates finds in the attic of his grandnephew, Pip Pomfry, and a pod of dolphins that help lead the way, after a year and a day, Martine reaches Bong Tree Island, which is hidden in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle. There she meets the owlpusses (or owlcats as some prefer to be called), descendents of Barney and Caterina, and other inhabitants of Bong Tree Island. She conducts interviews with the descendants and learns the history and genealogy of Barney and Caterina, and all about bong trees, Bong Tree Island and some of the rare inhabitants unique to the island, such as hedgepiggywigs, hummingbunnybirds, painted manaturtles, Assiri (aquatic cave dwelling fairies) and more. Tales of Bong Tree Island is a chronicle of Martine's travel adventures and compilation of the interviews she conducted while on Bong Tree Island, along with the great wisdom and lessons that could only be imparted by creatures such as owlpusses and hedgepiggywigs.
