Book excerpt: The Pasoh Forest Reserve (pasoh FR) has been a leading center for international field research in the Asian tropical forest since the 1970s, when a joint research project was carried out by Japanese, British and Malaysian research teams with the cooperation of the University of Malaya (UM) and the Forest Research Institute (FRI, now the Forest Research Institute Malaysia, FRIM) under the International Biological Program (IBP). The main objective of the project was to provide basic information on the primary productivity ofthe tropical rain forest, which was thought to be the most productive of the world's ecosystems. After the IBP project, a collaborative program between the University of Malaya and the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, UK, for post-graduate training was carried out at Pasoh. Reproductive biology of so me dipterocarp trees featured in many of the findings arrived at through the program, contributing greatly to progress in the population genetics of rain forest trees. Since those research pro grams, apart of the Pasoh forest and its field research station have been managed by FRIM. In 1984, FRIM started a long-term ecological research program in Pasoh FR with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) and Harvard University, establishing a 50-ha plot and enumerating and mapping all trees 1 cm or more in diameter at breast height. A recensus has been conducted every 5 years.

Book Synopsis Guide to Standard Floras of the World by : David G. Frodin
Download or read book Guide to Standard Floras of the World written by David G. Frodin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-06-14 with total page 1136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2001 book provides a selective annotated bibliography of the principal floras and related works of inventory for vascular plants. The second edition was completely updated and expanded to take into account the substantial literature of the late twentieth century, and features a more fully developed review of the history of floristic documentation. The works covered are principally specialist publications such as floras, checklists, distribution atlases, systematic iconographies and enumerations or catalogues, although a relatively few more popularly oriented books are also included. The Guide is organised in ten geographical divisions, with these successively divided into regions and units, each of which is prefaced with a historical review of floristic studies. In addition to the bibliography, the book includes general chapters on botanical bibliography, the history of floras, and general principles and current trends, plus an appendix on bibliographic searching, a lexicon of serial abbreviations, and author and geographical indexes.
Book Synopsis The Ecology of Trees in the Tropical Rain Forest by : I. M. Turner

This book was released on 2001-07-05 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our knowledge of the ecology of tropical rain-forest trees is limited, yet a good understanding of the trees is essential to unravelling the workings of the forest itself. This book aims to summarise contemporary understanding of the ecology of tropical rain-forest trees, with particular emphasis on comparative ecology.

Book Synopsis Tropical Forest Ecology by : Egbert Giles Leigh Jr.
Download or read book Tropical Forest Ecology written by Egbert Giles Leigh Jr. and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1999-03-04 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Tropical Forest Ecology, Egbert G. Leigh, Jr., one of the world's foremost tropical ecologists, introduces readers to the tropical forest and describes the intricate web of interdependence among the great diversity of tropical plants and animals. Focusing on the tropical forest of Barro Colorado Island, Panama, Leigh shows what Barro Colorado can tell us about other tropical forests--and what tropical forests can tell us about Barro Colorado. This book considers three essential questions for understanding the ecological organization of tropical forests. How do they stay green with their abundance of herbivores? Why do they have such a diversity of plants and animals? And what role does mutualism play in the ecology of tropical forests? Beautifully written and abundantly illustrated, Tropical Forest Ecology will certainly appeal to a wide variety of scientists in the fields of evolution, tropical biology, botany, zoology, and natural history.
Book Synopsis Trees and Forests of Tropical Asia by : Peter Ashton
Download or read book Trees and Forests of Tropical Asia written by Peter Ashton and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2022-10-14 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Exploring the Tapovan takes the reader on an expedition into the leafy, clammy, forested landscapes of tropical Asia. Peter Ashton and David Lee, two of the world's leading scholars on Asian tropical rain forests reveal the geology and climate that have produced these unique forests, the diversity of species that inhabit them, and the role of humans in modifying the landscapes over centuries. This work follows Peter Ashton's massive On the Forests of Tropical Asia, the first book to describe the forests of the entire tropical Asian region, from Sind to New Guinea. It provides a more condensed, accessible, and updated overview of tropical Asian forests aimed at students as well as tropical forest biologists, ecologists, and conservation biologists"--

Book Synopsis Invasive Plant Species of the World, 2nd Edition by : Ewald Weber
Download or read book Invasive Plant Species of the World, 2nd Edition written by Ewald Weber and published by CABI. This book was released on 2017-04-13 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first edition of this book in 2003, the status of many important invasive plants around the world has changed dramatically. Species have extended their ranges, new literature has been accumulated, and control methods have been improved. Research on some plant invaders has also focused on the species' ecology and impacts, confirming that invasive plants continue to pose serious threats to species and ecosystems. Given their range expansions and introduction via international trade, these problems will only become more serious in the future. Including colour images of each species, this up-to-date reference guide on the most important plant invaders is an invaluable tool for both researchers and policy makers.
