Polygraphic data were recorded during 8-hours sleep in 2 infants. A set of 15 parameters were estimated and submitted to an expert for classification. In this way, two data files were obtained and used as a test domain for the system. The tree-based neural net builds on the idea of generating a decision tree and translating it into a neural network architecture that is trainable by the backpropagation algorithm. The network has unambiguously defined topology and initial weights, and its subsequent training is very fast. The contribution of the system's individual aspects to the overall performance is studied. The achieved classification accuracy of cca 85% compares very favourably with other learning systems."

Book excerpt: This volume of research papers comprises the proceedings of the first International Conference on Mathematics of Neural Networks and Applications (MANNA), which was held at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford from July 3rd to 7th, 1995 and attended by 116 people. The meeting was strongly supported and, in addition to a stimulating academic programme, it featured a delightful venue, excellent food and accommo dation, a full social programme and fine weather - all of which made for a very enjoyable week. This was the first meeting with this title and it was run under the auspices of the Universities of Huddersfield and Brighton, with sponsorship from the US Air Force (European Office of Aerospace Research and Development) and the London Math ematical Society. This enabled a very interesting and wide-ranging conference pro gramme to be offered. We sincerely thank all these organisations, USAF-EOARD, LMS, and Universities of Huddersfield and Brighton for their invaluable support. The conference organisers were John Mason (Huddersfield) and Steve Ellacott (Brighton), supported by a programme committee consisting of Nigel Allinson (UMIST), Norman Biggs (London School of Economics), Chris Bishop (Aston), David Lowe (Aston), Patrick Parks (Oxford), John Taylor (King's College, Lon don) and Kevin Warwick (Reading). The local organiser from Huddersfield was Ros Hawkins, who took responsibility for much of the administration with great efficiency and energy. The Lady Margaret Hall organisation was led by their bursar, Jeanette Griffiths, who ensured that the week was very smoothly run.

For those interested in computational logic, it provides a framework for knowledge representation and computation based on higher-order logic, and demonstrates its advantages over more standard approaches based on first-order logic. For those interested in machine learning, the book explains how higher-order logic provides suitable knowledge representation formalisms and hypothesis languages for machine learning applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graph-structured data is ubiquitous throughout the natural and social sciences, from telecommunication networks to quantum chemistry. Building relational inductive biases into deep learning architectures is crucial for creating systems that can learn, reason, and generalize from this kind of data. Recent years have seen a surge in research on graph representation learning, including techniques for deep graph embeddings, generalizations of convolutional neural networks to graph-structured data, and neural message-passing approaches inspired by belief propagation. These advances in graph representation learning have led to new state-of-the-art results in numerous domains, including chemical synthesis, 3D vision, recommender systems, question answering, and social network analysis. This book provides a synthesis and overview of graph representation learning. It begins with a discussion of the goals of graph representation learning as well as key methodological foundations in graph theory and network analysis. Following this, the book introduces and reviews methods for learning node embeddings, including random-walk-based methods and applications to knowledge graphs. It then provides a technical synthesis and introduction to the highly successful graph neural network (GNN) formalism, which has become a dominant and fast-growing paradigm for deep learning with graph data. The book concludes with a synthesis of recent advancements in deep generative models for graphs—a nascent but quickly growing subset of graph representation learning.

Book excerpt: Machine learning and artificial intelligence are already widely applied to facilitate our daily lives, as well as scientific research, but with the world currently facing a global COVID-19 pandemic, their capacity to provide an important tool to support those searching for a way to combat the novel corona virus has never been more important. This book presents the proceedings of the International Conference on Machine Learning and Intelligent Systems (MLIS 2020), which was due to be held in Seoul, Korea, from 25-28 October 2020, but which was delivered as an online conference on the same dates due to COVID-19 restrictions. MLIS 2020 was the latest in a series of annual conferences that aim to provide a platform for exchanging knowledge about the most recent scientific and technological advances in the field of machine learning and intelligent systems. The annual conference also strengthens links within the scientific community in related research areas. The book contains 53 papers, selected from more than 160 submissions and presented at MLIS 2020. Selection was based on the results of review and scored on: originality, scientific/practical significance, compelling logical reasoning and language. Topics covered include: data mining, image processing, neural networks, human health, natural language processing, video processing, computational intelligence, expert systems, human-computer interaction, deep learning, and robotics. Offering a current overview of research and developments in machine learning and artificial intelligence, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field.

Book excerpt: This book is a result of the ISD'99, Eight International Conference on Infonnation Systems Development-Methods and Tools, Theory, and Practice held August 11-13, 1999 in Boise, Idaho, USA. The purpose of this conference was to address the issues facing academia and industry when specifying, developing, managing, and improving infonnation systems. ISD'99 consisted not only of the technical program represented in these Proceedings, but also of plenary sessions on product support and content management systems for the Internet environment, workshop on a new paradigm for successful acquisition of infonnation systems, and a panel discussion on current pedagogical issues in systems analysis and design. The selection of papers for ISD'99 was carried out by the International Program Committee. Papers presented during the conference and printed in this volume have been selected from submissions after fonnal double-blind reviewing process and have been revised by their authors based on the recommendations of reviewers. Papers were judged according to their originality, relevance, and presentation quality. All papers were judged purely on their own merits, independently of other submissions. We would like to thank the authors of papers accepted for ISD'99 who all made gallant efforts to provide us with electronic copies of their manuscripts confonning to common guidelines. We thank them for thoughtfully responding to reviewers comments and carefully preparing their final contributions. We thank Daryl Jones, provost of Boise State University and William Lathen, dean, College of Business and Economics, for their support and encouragement.
