Download or read book Tree and Shrub Insects of the Prairie Provinces written by W. G. H. Ives and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 600 species of insects and mites that feed on trees and shrubs in the prairie provinces are discussed in terms of their distribution, hosts, importance, life cycle and appearance and damage. There are approximately 1100 colour photographs; the life cycle and damage of major pest species are illustrated, and for less important species, primarily the larval stage is shown. Pests attacking coniferous hosts are separated from those attacking hardwoods, and each group is subdivided according to the kind of feeding damage and type of insect involved. An extensive bibliography is provided. In addition to a taxonomic index listing the order and family of each insect or mite, there is a diagnostic index listing the host species, feeding site of the pest, and species of insect or mite involved and an insect index.

Book Synopsis Annotated List of the Lepidoptera of Alberta, Canada by : Greg Pohl
Download or read book Annotated List of the Lepidoptera of Alberta, Canada written by Greg Pohl and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2010-03-05 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This checklist of the Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) of Alberta lists 2367 species reported to occur in the province, as well as 138 species whose occurrence in Alberta is probable. Each species entry includes adult flight time and distribution status in the Cordilleran, Boreal, and Grasslands ecozones, as well as references to taxonomic works and to the literature and public collection sources of the records. Detailed notes on taxonomy, nomenclature, distribution, habitat, and biology are given for 1524 of the listed species. An additional section provides details on 171 species erroneously reported from Alberta in previous works. The authors hope it will be a useful resource for anyone carrying out species-level work on Lepidoptera in western Canada, or taxonomic work on Lepidoptera in general. An introductory section provides a general overview of the order Lepidoptera and the natural regions of Alberta, and the history and current state of knowledge of Alberta Lepidoptera. Each of the 63 families (and selected subfamilies) occurring in Alberta is briefly reviewed, with information on distinguishing features, general appearance, and general biology. The list is accompanied by an appendix of proposed nomenclature changes, consisting of revised status for 25 taxa raised from synonymy to species level, and new synonymy for 20 species-level and one genus-level taxa here considered to be subjective synonyms, with resultant revised synonymy for one taxon and formalization of seven new combinations.

Book Synopsis Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape by : Ajith H. Perera
Download or read book Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape written by Ajith H. Perera and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing popularity of the broad, landscape-scale approach to forest management represents a dramatic shift from the traditional, stand-based focus on timber production. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape responds to the increasing need of forest policy developers, planners, and managers for an integrated, comprehensive perspective on ecological landscapes. The book examines the "big picture" of ecological patterns and processes through a case study of the vast managed forest region in Ontario. The contributors synthesize current landscape ecological knowledge of this area and look at gaps and future research directions from several points of view: spatial patterns, ecological functions and processes, natural disturbances, and ecological responses to disturbance. They also discuss the integration of landscape ecological knowledge into policies of forest management policies, particularly with respect to Ontario's legislative goals of forest sustainability. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape is the first book to describe the landscape ecology of a continuously forested landscape in a comprehensive manner. It is written for instructors and students in forest management, wildlife ecology, and landscape ecology, and for forest managers, planners, and policy developers in North America.
