Book excerpt: This work is a thesis that collects ancient versions about the origin of the universe, starting mainly from the Hebrew sources of the Hebrew Barashit (Genesis) and the Sumerian Enuma-Elis. Here I make a translation and review comparing it with the scientific theory of cosmic formation, to emphasize the great affinity between these ancient writings, and other stories, with the recent discoveries and postulates of science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is the first volume in the new Philo of Alexandria Commentary Series. It contains a new English translation of Philo's famous treatise "On the creation of the cosmos" (the first for seventy years), and the first ever commentary in English. In this work the Jewish exegete and philosopher gives a selective exegesis of the Mosaic creation account and the events in Paradise as recorded in Genesis 1-3. It is the first preserved example of Hexaemeral literature, and had a profound influence on early Christian thought. The commentary aims to make Philo's thought accessible to readers such as graduate students who are just beginning to read him, but also contains much material that will be of interest to specialists in Hellenistic Judaism, ancient philosophy and patristic literature.

Davis argue that God's interaction with our world is a possibility affirmed equally by the Bible and the contemporary scientific record. Rather than confirming that the cosmos is closed to the actions of the divine, advancing scientific knowledge seems to indicate that the nature of the universe is actually open to the unique type of divine activity portrayed in the Bible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents the two ideas of cosmos that prevailed from about 500 BCE until about 1840 CE. These two ideas of cosmos were the foundation for theories of creation that continue even today. Both of these ideas of cosmos were based on the perception of the sky as a solid structure, a work of art, divine art. The four revolutionary scientists of the modern era Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, and Newton did a great deal to challenge the cosmos. Their work was limited, however, to our solar system. They left the solid sky standing. This book identifies Edmond Halley as a neglected revolutionary who provided the first evidence against the solid sky. Halley opened the opportunity for us to begin the search for a new theory of creation.

Book excerpt: "I form light and create darkness; I make well-being and create calamity; I am the LORD, who does all these things." Isaiah 45:7 When God created the world, he brought perfect order out of what was "without form and void." But with human rebellion against God leading to God's curse, disorder was introduced into creation—disorder that we still see all around us today. Tracing the chaos to cosmos theme from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22, pastor-scholar Sidney Greidanus reveals how God is restoring his creation through Jesus Christ, who has already begun to shine light into the darkness and will one day return to bring peace, order, and restoration once and for all. With discussion questions at the end of each chapter and a fourteen-session reading plan, this book is ideal for small groups as well as individual study.

I miss him so.” —Kurt Vonnegut Carl Sagan's prophetic vision of the tragic resurgence of fundamentalism and the hope-filled potential of the next great development in human spirituality The late great astronomer and astrophysicist describes his personal search to understand the nature of the sacred in the vastness of the cosmos. Exhibiting a breadth of intellect nothing short of astounding, Sagan presents his views on a wide range of topics, including the likelihood of intelligent life on other planets, creationism and so-called intelligent design, and a new concept of science as "informed worship." Originally presented at the centennial celebration of the famous Gifford Lectures in Scotland in 1985 but never published, this book offers a unique encounter with one of the most remarkable minds of the twentieth century.

Thus the work is paradigmatic for the philosophical and religious concepts of the early imperial age, which offer points of contact with nascent Christianity.

For countless centuries people have felt a sense of wonder about the heavens. How did our universe come into being? Has it always been here? Is our existence due to random chance or supernatural design? Is God "out there"? If so, what is He like? Traditionally, the church has answered such questions with Scripture, while science has contributed theories and formulas of its own. Torn between a deep respect for church doctrines and an intellectual need for answers that support what their senses are telling them, many Christians have avoided such discussions altogether. Actually, the two sides are no longer that far apart. In The Creator and the Cosmos, astrophysicist Dr. Hugh Ross explains how recent scientific measurements of the universe have clearly pointed to the existence of God. Whether you're looking for scientific support for your faith or new reasons to believe, The Creator and the Cosmos will enable you to see the Creator for yourself.

Book excerpt: .".. is a worthwhile elementary treatment of the cosmology of the early Universe written with a liveliness and simplicity that will surely encourage students to pursue the subject further.'' John D Barrow Nature, 1989 .".. a superb guide to what is known about cosmology....The authors also leave you with a sense of anticipation and excitement.'' David Hughes New Scientist, 1989 "The book is well written and interesting, particularly in its use of Chinese stories throughout ... The book contains all the standard material found in such texts. The chapters on the thermodynamics of the Universe are particularly good ... this is a first-rate book of its genre and is heartily recommended." Kenneth Dunn Mathematical Reviews, 1993 "The best popular account of the science that explains how the universe can be friendly to life is a book, 'Creation of the Universe', by the Chinese astronomers, Fang Li Zhi and Li Shu Xian. The book was translated into English and published by World Scientific Publishing in 1989. Fang Li Zhi is the famous dissident astronomer now living in exile in the United States. I particularly recommend Chapter 6, with the title 'How Order Was Born of Chaos'. This tells the same story that I am telling you today, but with more detail and more depth." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Liber de causis (De causis et processu universitatis a prima causa), a monotheistic reworking of Proclus’ Elements of Theology, was translated from Arabic into Latin in the twelfth century, with an attribution to Aristotle. Considering this Neoplatonic text a product of Aristotle's school and even the completion of Aristotle’s Metaphysics, Albert the Great concluded his series of Aristotelian paraphrases by commenting on it. To do so was to invite controversy, since accidents of translation had made many readers think that the Liber de causis taught that God made only the first creature, which in turn created the diverse multitude of lesser things. Thus, Albert’s contemporaries in the Christian West took the text to uphold the supposedly Aristotelian doctrine that from the One only one thing can emanate—a doctrine they rejected, believing as they did that God freely determined the number and kinds of creatures. Albert, however, defended the philosophers against the theologians of his day, denying that the thesis "from the One only one proceeds" removed God’s causality from the diversity and multiplicity of our world. This Albert did by appealing to a greater theologian, Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, and equating the being that is the subject of metaphysics with the procession of Being from God's intellect, a procession Dionysius described in On the Divine Names. Creation as Emanation examines Albert's reading of the Liber de causis with an eye toward two questions: First, how does Albert view the relation between faith and reason, so that he can identify creation from nothing with emanation from God? And second, how does he understand Platonism and Aristotelianism, so that he can avoid the misreadings of his fellow theologians by finding in a late-fifth-century Neoplatonist the key to Aristotle’s meaning?

Book excerpt: Some of puzzling Metaphilosophical Questions on Creation: 1) Who was there before creation? 2) Is there a beginning and an end to this creation? 3) Do other universes exist, similar to the universe we live in? 4) What was the first principle or tatwa that put the creation process into action? 5) Is there any controlling force to rule the universe and to keep the universe harmonious? Some of the Cardinal cosmic laws are: "What is evolved is necessarily caused."-- Cardinal cosmic law -"Being originated it is destructible/changed." -- Cardinal cosmic law -"What is caused is limited." -- Cardinal cosmic law Evolution takes place every moment*. "A moment is that period of time unit by which an Anu (atom) in motion gives up its previous position and reaches the succeeding place." -- Maharshi Vyasa. (3000BC) *A moment (Kshana) indicates the smallest unit of time. "Dharma is the form of Dharmi". "There is no Dharma without a Dharmi" "Dharma Parinama =Characteristic Manifestation is known as Creation" This subject of creation is generally considered obscure, abstract, secretive and unfathomable. But knowledge is self-luminating and the Veda is knowledge. The ancient wisdom of Bharathadesam is the source of illumination for the concepts of creation. "After reading this book, I found it as path breaking and revealed many secrets. In the entire work Dr.Prattipati Ramaiah relied on Veda Mantras and Aphorisms of Maharshis and ancient scriptures of Bharatadesha. . It is like viewing Earth from a satellite to have an overall information of secrets of Creation of Cosmos." - Amazon Review
