Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An account of what Arabic scholars have written, either as commentators or as more independent authors, on the subjects treated in Aristotle's Meteorology, this work investigates how they were influenced by one another and by previous Greek commentators. For each subject a survey is given of the content of the Greek commentaries (by Alexander, Philoponus and Olympiodorus) as well as of a later treatise, ascribed to Olympiodorus and extant only in Arabic. Then, the Arabic version of Ibn al-Bitrīq is investigated; it was one of the sources used by the Arabic writers which are discussed after that: al-Kindī, Ibn Sīnā and later scholars who were inspired by him, Ibn Bājja and Ibn Rušd. Two Arabic treatises on subjects from the Meteorology are edited and translated.

Book Synopsis Aristotle's Meteorology in the Arabico-Latin Tradition by : Pieter L. Schoonheim
Download or read book Aristotle's Meteorology in the Arabico-Latin Tradition written by Pieter L. Schoonheim and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-05-03 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aristotle’s Meteorology: a twin set in Mediaeval Text Tradition. The Greek text of Aristotle’s Meteorology is in places highly problematic. Its edition by Fobes (1922), however, is a highlight in editorial technique. The Arabic version (c.800) is of quite different form and content. The two editions by Badawi (1961) and Petraitis (1967) were subject to considerable improvement. The present edition was done on the basis of the two extant Arabic manuscripts. The edition of the Latin translation (12th c.) from the Arabic has been constituted on the basis of 5 manuscript sources, out of 110 copies. The status of both the Arabic and the Latin texts was bad, but not hopeless: as the Latin version stands near to its Arabic predecessor, the text of the latter gives support to the editing of the text, as well as for the understanding of the contents. And this procedure works vice versa. The present edition of the texts has been completed with an Index of technical terms in Arabic, Greek and Latin and Registers on the Greek and Latin. Further a Bibliography and List of Latin manuscripts are presented.

Book excerpt: This volume contains an edition, together with a translation and a commentary, of those parts relating to Aristotle's Meteorologica in Barhebraeus' Butyrum sapientiae (Cream of Wisdom), the major philosophical work of the thirteenth-century Syriac prelate and polymath. Butyrum sapientiae, though based mainly on Ibn Sīnā's Kitāb al-šifāʾ (Book of Healing), draws on a number of other sources. The detailed analysis of the text provided in this volume casts some important light on the manner in which Greek science and philosophy were transmitted in the Orient and as such will be of interest to scholars both of the Classical and Islamic world. The philological analysis of the text will be of interest to scholars of Syriac language and culture.

Book Synopsis Epicurean Meteorology by : Fredericus Antonius Bakker
Download or read book Epicurean Meteorology written by Fredericus Antonius Bakker and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Epicurean Meteorology Frederik Bakker discusses the meteorology as laid out by Epicurus (341-270 BCE) and Lucretius (1st century BCE). Although in scope and organization their ideas are clearly rooted in the Peripatetic tradition, their meteorology sets itself apart from this tradition by its systematic use of multiple explanations and its sole reliance on sensory evidence as opposed to mathematics and other axiomatic principles. Through a thorough investigation of the available evidence Bakker offers an updated and qualified account of Epicurean meteorology, arguing against Theophrastus’ authorship of the Syriac meteorology, highlighting the originality of Lucretius’ treatment of mirabilia, and refuting the oft-repeated claim that the Epicureans held the earth to be flat.
Book Synopsis Islamic Thought in the Middle Ages by : Wim Raven
Download or read book Islamic Thought in the Middle Ages written by Wim Raven and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-08-31 with total page 737 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Islamic thought in the Middle Ages, the impact of Greek philosophy and science, and the formation of an own theological tradition, is a long and complex one. The articles in this volume dedicated to Hans Daiber, one of the pioneering scholars in this field, offer new insights from a variety of perspectives: philological, philosophical, and historical. The subjects range from Islamic philosophy and theology, over the history of science, the transmission into other medieval cultures to language and literature. In addition to their specific discoveries, they give an impression of the dynamics of medieval Islamic intellectual history as well as of the diversity of approaches needed to understand this dynamics.
