Book excerpt: Some aspects of the physics of many-body systems arbitrarily away from equilibrium, mainly the characterization and irreversible evolution of their macroscopic state, are considered. The present status of phenomenological irreversible thermodynamics is described. An approach for building a statistical thermodynamics - dubbed Informational-Statistical-Thermodynamics - based on a non-equilibrium statistical ensemble formalism is presented. The formalism can be considered as encompassed within the scope of the so-called Predictive Statistical Mechanics, in which the predictability of future states in terms of the knowledge of present and past states, and the question of historicity in the case of systems with complex behaviour, is its main characteristic. The book is recommended for researchers in the area of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics and thermodynamics, as well as a textbook for advanced courses for graduate students in the area of condensed matter physics.

Not illustrated. 1903 edition. Excerpt: ...certain circumstances, be expressed in the form of a condition for a maximum or minimum. This can be done when, and only when, the conditions imposed upon the system are such that the lefthand side of (76) represents the variation of some one function. The most important of these cases are dealt with separately in the following paragraphs. They correspond exactly to the propositions which we have already deduced for special cases. From these propositions it may at once be seen whether it is a case of a maximum or a minimum. 150. First Case ( 141).--If no exchange of heat take place with the surrounding medium, the first law gives SU = W, hence, by (76), 8 = 0 (77) Among all the states of the system which can proceed from one another by adiabatic processes, the state of equilibrium is distinguished by a maximum of the entropy. Should there be several states in which the entropy has a maximum value, each one of them is a state of equilibrium; but if the entropy be greater in one than in all the others, then that state represents absolutely stable equilibrium, for it could no longer be the starting-point of any change whatsoever. 151. Second Case ( 142).--If the temperature be kept constant, equation (76) passes into and, by (71), -SF =-W. Among all the states which the system may assume at a given temperature, a state of equilibrium is characterized by the fact that the free energy of the system cannot decrease without performing an equivalent amount of work. If the external work be a negligible quantity, as it is when the volume is kept constant or in numerous chemical processes, then W = 0, and the condition of equilibrium becomes SF = 0, -i.e. among the states which can proceed from one another by isothermal...

Book excerpt: The problem of deriving irreversible thermodynamics from the re versible microscopic dynamics has been on the agenda of theoreti cal physics for a century and has produced more papers than can be digested by any single scientist. Why add to this too long list with yet another work? The goal is definitely not to give a gen eral review of previous work in this field. My ambition is rather to present an approach differing in some key aspects from the stan dard treatments, and to develop it as far as possible using rather simple mathematical tools (mainly inequalities of various kinds). However, in the course of this work I have used a large number of results and ideas from the existing literature, and the reference list contains contributions from many different lines of research. As a consequence the reader may find the arguments a bit difficult to follow without some previous exposure to this set of problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern technology strives towards higher speed, higher power, and higher miniaturiza tion. In these conditions, the classical transport equations must be updated in order to incorporate memory, non-local, and non-linear effects. These effects have been studied by starting from microscopic models which are specific to particular systems and whose solution requires mathematical approximations and boundary conditions. The aim of extended irreversible thermodynamics is to complement such microscopic analyses with a macroscopic framework which could play, with respect to the generalized trans port equations incorporating the aforementioned effects, a role similar to the one played by classical thermodynamics with respect to the classical transport equations. Such a macroscopic framework is particularly useful for comparing the results obtained from various microscopic models, for placing some restrictions on the range of validity of different approximations, and for settling a discussion on some basic concepts that arise unavoidably in a formalism that crosses the frontiers of the local-equilibrium theory. Extended irreversible thermodynamics is not at all in conflict with the classical theory of non-equilibrium thermodynamics and rational thermodynamics but must be viewed as a relevant extension of the scope of these descriptions. For the student or the researcher, it may be stimulating to go beyond the classical theories and to enter a of new ideas, new applications, and new problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique and consistent mathematical treatise contains a deductive description of equilibrium statistics and thermodynamics. The most important elements of non-equilibrium phenomena are also treated. In addition to the fundamentals, the text tries to show how large the area of statistical mechanics is and how many applications can be found here. Modern areas such as renormalization group theory, percolation, stochastic equations of motion and their applications in critical dynamics, as well as fundamental thoughts of irreversibility are discussed. The text will be useful for advanced students in physics and other sciences who have profound knowledge of quantum mechanics.
