Excerpt: ... part ii.-treatment. chapter xxi. the treatment of acute nephritis. In acute nephritis more rapid relief will be effected if the recumbent position be maintained. The efficacy of rest in diminishing the exudation of albumin has often been demonstrated. Bartels (in "Ziemssen") gives an account of a case of chronic interstitial nephritis in a young man, in which the occurrence of albumin in the urine could always be prevented by keeping the patient in bed, the albumin invariably returning when the patient sat up. There is no reason why, even in comparatively mild cases of acute nephritis, the same injurious effects should not be produced upon the acutely inflamed kidney by movement, as is produced in pneumonia, hepatitis, etc. Rest in acute nephritis is of the greatest importance. I have met with a number of cases in the convalescent stage in which the albumin had nearly disappeared, but would be temporarily brought back by sitting up or by moderate exercise in the room. Whatever increases the activity of the heart's action must affect the activity of the renal circulation, bringing about albuminous exudation, perhaps in the manner described in Chapter viii. From the facts there given, the effects, even in health, of great exertion upon albuminous exudation are apparent. The patient, until safety is assured, should be kept in bed. Dietetic Measures. Highly nitrogenized food should be avoided, such, for instance, as tends to excessive formation of uric acid. At the same time due regard must be had to supporting the patient's strength. Light animal broths can generally be given, while oysters and milk may be partaken of freely. Sometimes fowl or game maybe given, and fish may be freely eat

Bathing in warm or hot water is of the greatest service in many cases of disease. Plunging into cold water commonly brings a dog instantly out of a fit, and afterwards bathing in warm water prevents the return. Bathing in hot water subdues or lessens most inflammations, and is the best means of overcoming obstinate costiveness. WORMING. Worming of dogs is practised for two purposes, and T)oth of them erroneously. The one is to prevent them from going mad; or, when mad, from biting; the other to cure them of gnawing improper substances. It has been said, and is much believed, that when a dog has been wormed, provided he afterwards goes mad, he cannot bite; but worming can be no preventive. See Madness. The mouth, in some cases of madness, may become so swelled, that the dog cannot close his jaws; but this may happen in a wormed or umvoraed dog equally. Worming does not prevent gnawing but as it makes the mouth sore; hence as soon as that is well, the dog returns to his old habits; perhaps not in an equal degree quite, for, if it has been harshly done, he gets something older before it is well. I therefore conceive this a very useless practice, and one that will wear away with a greater knowledge of the proper treatment of this animal. WORMS. There is Bo complaint, distemper excepted, that destroys so many dogs as worms: almost every dog has them at some period of his life, and many have them always. There are several kinds of worms that affect dogs. Book excerpt: To those who would complain of the publication of a work upon the delicate subject to which the following pages refer, we would remark, that the evil here depicted, is one of great magnitude. This cause of disease is often entirely overlooked even by medical men, either from false notions of delicacy, or because their attention has not been drawn by fearful experience to cases which are ascribable merely to onanism. The patient is unconscious of his danger, and perseveres in his vicious habit-the physician treats him symptomatically, and death soon closes the scene. "Many a young man," remarked a physician, who had seen much of disease from this cause, "many a one has come to me, totally unconscious that his criminal act was sapping to the very foundation his health and strength."
