'the Spirit of the Lord Jehovah is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me, ' &c. Acts x. 38. ' God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power.' i. 2. ' after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen.' It is more probable that these phrases are to be understood of the power of the Father, than of the Holy Spirit itself; for how could it be necessary that Christ should be filled with the Holy Spirit, of whom he had himself said, John xvi. 15. 'he shall take of mine?' For the same reason I am inclined to believe that the Spirit descended upon Christ at his baptism, not so much in his own name, as in virtue of a mission from the Father, and as a symbol and minister of the divine power. For what could the Spirit confer on Christ, from whom he was himself to be sent, and to receive all things? Was his purpose to bear witness to Christ? But as yet he was himself not so much as known. Was it meant that the Spirit should be then manifested for the first time to the church? But at the time of his appearance nothing was said of him or of his office; nor did that voice from heaven bear any testimony to the Spirit, but only to the Son. The descent therefore, and appearance of the Holy Spirit in the likeness of a dove, seems to have been nothing more than a representation of the ineffable affection of the Father for the Son, communicated by the Holy Spirit, under the appropriate image of a dove, and accompanied by a voice from heaven declaratory of that affection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise on Christian Doctrine: Compiled From the Holy Scriptures Alone To enter into a preliminary discussion of the doctrines or opinions contained in the present volume, seems, properly speaking, to be no necessary part of the Translator's duty. After stating, therefore, in the first place, the circumstances under which the original manuscript was discovered, and the reasons for considering it as the long lost theological work of Milton, it will be sufficient to subjoin, as briefly as possible, a few remarks chiefly relating to certain peculiarities in the following treatise, by which it is distinguished from the authors other compositions. From information communicated by Robert Lemon, sen. Esq. Deputy Keeper of His Majesty's State Papers, who has lately completed from the documents under his care an entire series of the Order-Books of the Council of State during the Interregnum, it appears that Milton retired from active official employment as Secretary for Foreign Languages, about the middle of the year 1665. The following entry occurs under the date of April 17 in that year: "The Councell resumed the debate upon the report made from the Committee of the Councell to whom it was referred to consider of the establishment of the Councell's contingencies. "Ordered. . . That the former yearly Salary of Mr. John Milton, of Two Hundred Eighty-Eight Pounds, &c., formerly charged on the Councell's contingencies, be reduced to One Hundred and Fiftie Pounds per annum, and paid to him, during his life, out of His Highness' Exchequer." This sum must have been intended as a retiring pension in consideration of past services, as it is evident from another entry, under the same date, that a successor was already appointed, at a reduced salary, to discharge the duties of the situation which Milton had previously occupied. Since the ethically necessary and the ethically free, far removed from being exclusive, confirm and demand one another, and since holy love is the union of this double form of the one primary good Being, all non-Christian ideas of God of a one-sided Transcendence and Immanence are definitively surmounted, and God can be thought neither as fate nor mere law, neither as absolute indifference nor as caprice and as in Himself mutable. Deism emphasizes by its incommunicable God the divine Exaltation, the divine Self-preservation, which stands estranged and cold over against the world; Pantheism emphasizes the process of living divine Self-communication in the world, but its God loses Himself therein. Both, as we have seen,1 develop into contradictions. They are positively transcended by the trinitarian apprehension of the ethical Being, that is to say, of Love, which desires itself as necessary and as free, that is, which even in Self-love wills love, and even in Self-communication has and wills itself, and in both is amor amoris. Sublimity and humility, says Franz von Baader, are wondrously united in love.
