Book Synopsis The Treasury of Languages, Vol. 1 by : James Bonwick
Download or read book The Treasury of Languages, Vol. 1 written by James Bonwick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Treasury of Languages, Vol. 1: A Rudimentary Dictionary of Universal Philology W'estern and Southern Europe. This makes Asia and Europe the only region in which the whole (or nearly the whole) history of Language can be studied. Besides this, in Europe and Asia we have a history. We can see how languages like the English and Russian are extending them selves how the German has extended itself; how the Latin had previously extended itself. We can see how languages like the Keltic, the Lithuanic, and the-fin recede. (1) The Western division is the one with which we are most familiar; it includes Great Britain, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, the Valley of the Danube, and Greece; allowance being made for the Turk and Hungarian, which are intrusive. (2) The great Northern area is in Russia conterminous with the Western, which means, roughly speaking, Northern Asia with a large part of Europe; the chief displacements having been effected by the great spread of the Turk language. (3) The south-eastern area begins with the North frontier of China, and includes Thibet, N ipal, the Transgangetic penin sula, Assam, Siam, Pegu, Cambogia, cochin-china, and China. (4) The south-western area contains India, Persia, and the Caucasus here the displacing languages are Indian, Persian, and Arabic, which last is treated as African. [It] proves that a surprising number of Hawaiian words from our receding past still help us to express ourselves in the maddening present. --from the Foreword by O. A. Bushnell Working from faded notes left more than a century ago by Dr. Charles M. Hyde, Harold Winfield Kent researched correct spellings, diacritical marks, definitions, and new words to compile this listing of Hawaiian words according to category and subject. Readers will discover unanticipated uses as they explore the treasures in this book. Some people will use it to gain an acquaintance with the Hawaiian culture in all its aspects; others will use it to enhance their familiarity with the language. It will be an aid to oratory and poetry, prayer and preaching, writing and teaching.

Book Synopsis Only in Canada You Say by : Katherine Barber
Download or read book Only in Canada You Say written by Katherine Barber and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ask any Canadian about a distinctly Canadian form of English, and most will offer an enthusiastic Bob-and-Doug-McKenzie 'eh' in response. A passionate few might also bring up the colour vs. color debate or our pronunciations of 'out' and 'about'. And some may point to the ubiquitous Canadiantoque as evidence of a language that is all our own. If this is your idea of Canadian English, then it might surprise you that Katherine Barber, Editor-in-Chief of the best-selling Canadian Oxford Dictionary and author of the best-selling Six Words You Never Knew Had Something to Do With Pigs, haswritten a new book filled with nothing but made-in-Canada vocabulary. Only in Canada You Say highlights more than 1,200 words and phrases that are unique to our neck of the woods. Did you know, for example, that every time you ask for Gravol at the drug store, you're using a word that is unknownanywhere else? That those tasty butter tarts your mother used to make don't exist beyond our borders? Or that there are three distinctly Canadian sex words? And jokes about living in the Great White North aside, it is still pretty interesting to discover that there are 17 Canadian words for ice!Organized thematically, Only in Canada You Say covers Canadian English from coast to coast to coast, with sections dedicated to the things we love to do, where we live, how we get around, and what we wear. The entertaining and informative introductions to each section provide a fresh, ofteneye-opening, perspective on the reality of Canadian English from Canada's own 'Word Lady', Katherine Barber. Only in Canada You Say maybe 'eh' is just the beginning of this story!
