Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his foreword, former New York governor and vice president of the United States Nelson A. Rockefeller remembers his first trip to Mexico in 1933 and his subsequent, life-long fascination with the Mexican people and their popular art. Rockefeller's collection of more than 3,000 pieces of Mexican folk art is widely considered to be the most exceptional in the U.S., and Folk Treasures of Mexico celebrates these icons, created from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries, with more than 150 photos of the pieces, many of which are quite rare. This updated edition of the long out-of-print book focusing on this stunning collection of Mexican folk art contains a new foreword by Rockefeller's daughter, Ann Rockefeller Roberts, and a new prologue by Marion Oettinger, Jr., the director of the San Antonio Museum of Art, who wrote the principal text about the collection. Oettinger describes the objects according to function: utilitarian, ceremonial, decorative, or for play. Among the many noteworthy objects are a wooden-carved centurion helmet mask from the eighteenth century depicting a Roman guard, which is one of the few remaining masks of this type in existence, and a nineteenth century ceramic pitcher from Oaxaca that combines many stylistic techniques. Other objects include a variety of children's toys, clothing, and items for eating and drinking. First published in 1990, the book also contains the original preface by Rockefeller's daughter, who was instrumental in finding permanent homes for her father's collection, which can now be found in the San Antonio Museum of Art and the Mexican Museum in San Francisco. Including a glossary, bibliography, and chronology, Folk Treasures of Mexico is a must-read for anyone interested in Latin American art, culture, and history.

Book excerpt: There are certain dangers in this activity that not everyone is ready for. A person has to be committed to face danger as one of the rules of this wild game. This activity is for those that aren't afraid to risk it all to find a treasure. The author and his friends risked more than enough in some of the projects that they got into. Sometimes we wonder about the risks and dangers Miguel and his friends were exposed to in the past. Was it worth it? Yes it was! Fortunately, they came out of it alive. We can't say the same for other less fortunate individuals that lost it all, after successfully finding and excavating a treasure in Mexico.

Book excerpt: 2016 Victoria Urbano Critical Monograph Book Prize, presented by the International Association of Hispanic Feminine Literature and Culture Winner of the 2018 Katherine Singer Kovacs Prize presented by the Modern Language Association Honorable Mention, 2018 Elli Kongas-Maranda Professional Award presented by the Women's Studies Section of the American Folklore Society Analyzes cultural materials that grapple with gender and blackness to revise traditional interpretations of Mexicanness. México’s Nobodies examines two key figures in Mexican history that have remained anonymous despite their proliferation in the arts: the soldadera and the figure of the mulata. B. Christine Arce unravels the stunning paradox evident in the simultaneous erasure (in official circles) and ongoing fascination (in the popular imagination) with the nameless people who both define and fall outside of traditional norms of national identity. The book traces the legacy of these extraordinary figures in popular histories and legends, the Inquisition, ballads such as “La Adelita” and “La Cucaracha,” iconic performers like Toña la Negra, and musical genres such as the son jarocho and danzón. This study is the first of its kind to draw attention to art’s crucial role in bearing witness to the rich heritage of blacks and women in contemporary México.

Book excerpt: The Mexican colonial period has traditionally been considered a dark period in the arts, a long gap between the arrival of the Spaniards and the early twentieth century. Through new and focused scholarship, the exhibition catalogue The Grandeur of Viceregal Mexico demonstrates that just the opposite is true. This landmark publication features extraordinary decorative and fine arts from the Mexican viceregal period (1521-1821). The lavishly illustrated catalogue is written in Spanish and English and, for the first time, presents to American audiences the rich artistic heritage of colonial Mexico. Five insightful essays by Mexican and American specialists explore the confluence of cultures that gives the arts of colonial Mexico a distinctive quality. This distinction, which differentiates the works from the arts of both Spain and other Latin American countries, is not widely understood in either the United States or Mexico. Expert commentaries enable readers to learn in greater depth about the outstanding collection of paintings, sculptures, furniture, ceramics, metals, textiles, featherwork, lacquer, and books housed in the Museo Franz Mayer in Mexico City. The contributors are: D. Hector Rivero Borrell Miranda, Director of the Museo Franz Mayer, Mexico City Gustavo Curiel, cultural historian Antonio Rubial García, historian Juana Gutierrez Haces, art historian Peter C. Marzio, Director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston David B. Warren, Director of Bayou Bend Collection, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Book excerpt: When Estela moves to Mexico City in the late 1800s and meets La Señorita, "what starts as lessons to educate poor children grows into a school for prostitutes, and that soon leads to a controversial all-women orchestra, a radical underground newspaper, and an increasingly dangerous movement for social change that foreshadows the Mexican Revolution."--Jacket.
