Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystery of Bonanza Trail Bonanza Trail is a pathway over the mountain leading from the north to the south side of a titanic uplift that adjoins the main range. The gap through which it passes reaches an altitude of 11,000 feet above sea level. From that point to the creek bottom on the south, the Trail drops abruptly to the deep gulch that gradually widens from a pass to a beautiful valley, and finally is lost in the desert miles and miles away. The Trail, after leaving the saddle, hugs the side of the Ascension range, on the left, following a great dyke of volcanic rock, spewed up during a throe of nature in the early making of the world. The side of the mountain, as far as the line of vision extends, is a monotonous sea of broken andesite, sharp and jagged. There is not a tree on the side of this towering mass, not a sign of vegetation. One must follow the dyke, for to cross on the slide would mean death. Men 01 every race, nation and faith have fled, wan dered and drifted to this great and inviting land, till we may boast of an aggregation the like of which can not be seen elsewhere on earth. And the charm of the New World has possessed them like a spell. Discontented, it may be, in the first location, and the second, and even the third, their faces are still toward the setting sun; they almost never turn back. A generation may live and die in the Old Do minion; the second comes on to Ohio, the third to Illinois, and so, with Westward Ho! For watchword, the flood of folks moves on, each wave reaching farther than the one before. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Far Horizons: Hearts High You are about to start on a treasure hunt, the trails for which are laid throughout the pages of this book. Not one, but many treasures are hidden along the way. Some are large, some are small, some are pleasantly easy to find, while at the spot where others are hidden you must remain longer and dig deeper. You cannot, however, go astray if you read your directions carefully, follow your clues, and keep to the trail. You will find that the treasures resemble each other in one particular. Each is a story or poem fashioned by a master workman called an author; and each is constructed of jewels, called words. These treasures will appear worthless to you unless you understand the workman's plan, and become acquainted with each jewel in his design. Though many of the jewels are already known to you, others are new. You will therefore have to think clearly and work thoughtfully if you wish to enjoy each treasure as you find it. Book excerpt: This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Long Trail IT is scarcely necessary to say that no original research has been done in preparing these stories, though the facts have been checked and rechecked by reference to as many writers as possible. I am especially indebted to Mr. Wallace, to Mr. Long, and to Mr. Burpee. To the first two, I have made grateful acknowledg ment yerbally; to make parts of Mr. Burpee's fine work available to the younger children has been a delight. Other debts for pictures, maps and material are acknowledged in the text and bibliography. The stories have been read and discussed in the Normal Practice grades; we hope that other boys and girls will like them. Book excerpt: 'Ox-Team Days on the Oregon Trail' is a book written by Ezra Meeker about his experience traveling the Oregon Trail by ox-drawn wagon as a young man, migrating from Iowa to the Pacific Coast. Later on in his life, Meeker became convinced that the Oregon Trail was being forgotten, and he determined to bring it publicity so it could be marked and monuments erected. In 1906–1908, while in his late 70s, he retraced his steps along the Oregon Trail by wagon, seeking to build monuments in communities along the way. His trek reached New York City, and in Washington, D.C., he met President Theodore Roosevelt. He traveled the Trail again several times in the final two decades of this life, including by oxcart in 1910–1912 and by airplane in 1924.
