Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels, Trips, and Trots: On and Off Duty From the Tropics to the Arctic Circle Thanking all those who kindly reviewed my book, thereby contributing to its success, I am emboldened to launch forth a second edition. Travel is an education, and the love of it increases. Flying through the air is not travelling, and one great art of travel is to select interesting routes, and not to be hurried. Change, perpetual variety, is what people of active habits long for, and, I hope that many may be induced to leave sometimes the hackneyed and stereotyped paths and fashionable resorts, for the many beautiful regions comparatively unexplored. How many would be delighted with the eastern shore and islands of the Adriatic; how many visitors to Greece know the wonderful monasteries of Meteora or Megaspelaeon, or even the vale of Tempe? Many hundreds of our countrymen disport themselves annually on the "Rivvyera," but how few visit the exquisite Riviera di Levante, with Rapallo, Santa Marguerita, Porto Fino, etc. Ignorance causes a dread of leaving the beaten track, and sometimes over-solicitude about "Little Mary" destroys all love of adventure. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1904. Excerpt: ... SCAMPERS THROUGH GREECE. Scenes of deeds heroic, never to be surpassed, at which the world still wonders, and on which the imagination dwells with delight--works and achievements in art and literature which still, as ever, continue to fascinate and educate the nations--country teeming with beauty, from Tempe to Arcadia, of inexhaustible interest to philosopher, antiquarian, artist or globe-trotter--who has not longed to visit Greece? After a little dancing about in the Adriatic and Ionian seas, and enjoying fine views of the Albanian mountains, it will be found, before setting foot in Greece proper, quite an agreeable little antipasto, to explore some of the Ionian islands. I have found the climate of Corfu and Zante very pleasant in February; at Corfu there are frequently English yachts in harbour, as the island is much in favour with our countrymen; the sportsman may find good shooting in Albania, especially if he does not mind roughing it; a man was there last February, who told me that his last morning he had the luck to kill a chamois and a wild boar with his two last shots, right and left. The "Hagios Georgios" (St. George) Hotel at Corfu is very good and comfortable, and you are well treated there; it is much in favour with newly-married couples, Austrian and Hungarian, as a honeymoon resort. There are many interesting walks and drives about the island, the finest drive perhaps being to the Pass of Pantaleone and Paleocastridza (a monastery). On the way one passes thousands of very old olive-trees, which assume most grotesque forms; it is beautiful in early spring, when ranunculus, iris, violets, etc., and the cherry and plum trees are in bloom. From the Pass, looking north, is a grand view of Calypso's isle, and the rock into which Ulysses' ship w...

Book excerpt: Most travel diaries fizzle. By day six of a big trip, people are struggling to recall what happened on days three, four, and five. They return home with mostly empty journals, or bland writing that fails to capture the full spirit of their journeys. Award-winning travel humorist Dave Fox comes to the rescue in this book that's both informative and irreverently funny. You'll learn to: -- Bring destinations to life with bold details. -- Splash those details quickly onto your pages so journaling doesn't gobble up your precious vacation time. -- Elude your "Inner Censor" and write with confidence. -- Weave together your "outer" and "inner" journeys, using unfamiliar places as a backdrop for self-discovery. Dave shares his favorite journaling techniques, shows how to find time to write in the middle of an exciting trip, and infuses it all with a generous dose of his off-the-wall humor. Whether your journeys are weekend road trips or excursions around the world, this book will help transform you into a travel journaling superhero!
