Book excerpt: Perhaps the first non-Muslim to enter the holy city of Mecca, the Venetian explorer Ludovico di Varthema, also known as Barthema, wrote about his travels to such exotic places as Egypt, Syria, Arabia, Persia, India, and Ethiopia. His work is noted for its accurate details, human touch, and drama. Suspected of being a spy, Barthema escapes his confinement and ultimately is rescued by the Portuguese. Although published in 1510, this remains a fresh and exciting work today.

This book was released on 1905 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Jourdain (died 1619) was a British captain in the service of the East India Company. He joined the company as a factor in 1607 and first sailed on its "Fourth Voyage" to India, making stops along the way at the Cape of Good Hope, Socotra and other Indian Ocean islands, and Aden and Mocha in Yemen, before arriving at Surat. The Fourth Voyage consisted of two ships, the Union and the Ascension. A pinnace was built and added to the two ships during a stop at Table Bay. The voyage encountered many problems, and the ships never made it back to England. Bad weather in the Indian Ocean separated the vessels, and hostilities with the Portuguese and with the natives often broke out, making the voyage the worst in the company's early history. After failing to secure a trading post in India and dismayed with the time and gifts they wasted on Mughal officials, the British headed back to the Red Sea, where they resorted to seizing and ransoming Indian ships near Mocha. Jourdain was later sent on a mission to Sumatra, this time to challenge the Dutch monopoly on trade in the Spice Islands. The Journal of John Jourdain, 1608-1617, Describing his Experiences in Arabia, India, and the Malay Archipelago is the author's narrative of the nine years he was away while serving in the East India Company. The book begins with a lengthy introduction summarizing and elucidating the events that Jourdain chronicled in his journal. It begins on March 25, 1608, when he left the Downs, on the southeast coast of England, and ends on June 19, 1617, when his journal ceased with a final entry written near Dungeness, on the way to the Downs. On a later journey, Jourdain was shot by a Dutch sniper in Patani, India and died from his wounds in July 1619. The journal entries vary in length and substance, from brief descriptions of the weather conditions at sea to much longer accounts of events and places. Lists of authorities, bibliographies, and appendices of people and places are given at the end of the book.

Book excerpt: This volume presents a systematic and fresh interpretation of a mid-second-century AD papyrus - the so-called Muziris papyrus - which preserves on its two sides fragments of a unique pair of documents: on one side, a loan agreement to finance a commercial enterprise to South India and, on the other, an assessment of the fiscal value of a South Indian cargo imported on a ship named the Hermapollon. The two texts, whose informative potential has long been underexploited, clarify several aspects of the early Roman Empire's trade with South India, including transport logistics, financial and legal elements in the loan agreement funding the commercial enterprise, the trade goods included in the South Indian cargo, and the technicalities of calculating and collecting Roman customs duties on the Indian imports. This study also considers imperial fiscal policy as it related to the South Indian trade, the overall evolution of Rome's trade relations with South India, the structure and organization of South Indian trade stakeholders, and the role played by private tax-collectors. The in-depth analysis sheds new light on this important sector of the Roman economy during the first two centuries AD in two innovative ways: through a balanced consideration of South Indian sources and data, and by drawing comparisons with the pepper trade from late antiquity, the Middle Ages, and early modernity, resulting in a longue durée perspective on the western trade in South Indian pepper.

This book was released on 2024-01-04 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the accounts of six European non-Muslims who managed to secretly visit the cities of Makkah and Madinah and to record their travels as well as impressions. The protagonists were Ludovico di Varthema from Italy, Vincent le Blanc from France, Joseph Pitts from England, Ali Bey el Abbassi (Domenec Francese Jordi Badia i Leblich) from Spain, John Lewis Burckhardt from Switzerland, and Richard Francis Burton from England. The six men performed their feats in their capacities as adventurers, explorers, soldiers, and spies. One yet was a slave. The visits spanned a period of three and a half centuries, from 1503 as the time of the first visit by Ludovico di Varthema, to 1853 as the time of the visit by Richard Francis Burton. The period covered was perhaps one of the most dramatic periods in the history of the Hijaz region in particular, and also in the history of Islam-West (Orient-Occident) relations, in general. The visits and the travellers' accounts reveal much about challenges faced by Islamic culture and civilization in early modem times. Those challenges pertained to the rise of Western civilization and its imperialistic tendencies, modernization, radical anti-Islamic polemics, the waning of Islamic civilization, and Muslim schism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents the first detailed study of one of the most important masterpieces of Renaissance cartography, Martin Waldseemüller’s Carta marina of 1516. By transcribing, translating into English, and detailing the sources of all of the descriptive texts on the map, as well as the sources of many of the images, the book makes the map available to scholars in a wholly unprecedented way. In addition, the book provides revealing insights into how Waldseemüller went about making the map -- information that can’t be found in any other source. The Carta marina is the result of Waldseemüller’s radical re-evaluation of what a world map should be; he essentially started from scratch when he created it, rejecting the Ptolemaic model and other sources he had used in creating his 1507 map, and added more descriptive texts and a wealth of illustrations. Given its content, the book offers an essential reference work not only on this map, but also for anyone working in sixteenth-century European cartography.
